Memorize "Elijah" with us

Currently there are 3 of us with Jacky, Josiah, and myself memorizing "Elijah" the next few months. Anyone else want to join us in this powerful, radical faith building adventure?

JAMES claims that Elijah was nobody extra special. Rather, JAMES wants us to believe that we can have the same faith Elijah had. Is JAMES exaggerating or mislead, or does anybody actually believe such a radical faith is possible in 2011?

Looking forward to beginning in nine days! To answer your question, I believe that the radical faith that Elijah has is still possible in 2011, and that we can look at stories of martyrs and missionaries, like the one who prayed that it would rain on a festival for the sun to show that the LORD GOD, and not the sun god, was in control, and see others who have faith like him.

On another note, congratulations that your wife is pregnant! I hadn't heard that before!

Phil, I would but I have a lot of things that I am currently working on right now including Romans and 1+2 Peter. But I probably will just at a lot slower pace than the rest of you. And I do think that it is possible to have the kind of faith of Elijah and even more since the Holy Spirit abides in us. But on the other hand I am very lacking in that area.

I would really like to memorize this passage of scripture, but currently am working on 1 Peter. I would like to be added to the list, but may or may not follow the schedule.

It should be interesting since none of the chapters I have ever memorized are narrative--the only complete chapters I know are from the Epistles.

Count me in! I have enjoyed memorizing narrative verses and am looking forward to memorizing "Elijah".

Me too! I started today with 1 Kings 17:1-2, but I won't declare my verses, but if I can I will be done at the appointed time. (If not earlier!)

Would anyone consider memorizing the gospel of John with me? I'm already 25 verses into chapter 1, but I believe that the benefits of knowing an entire gospel, especially John would be very great. It is possible to be trying to memorize Romans, "Elijah" and John at the same time. I do this by writing the verses down on a paper the night before the day I plan to memorize them. This really helps me.

@ALL: If I am correct, Mr. Walker was referring to James 5:17:

Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth.

I am ready for a new challenge right now! Count me in. Blessings on your new little one. Be sure to recite your verses to your baby in the womb. They hear and learn to recognize your voice. Wouldn't be neat for your child to be the next Elijah! Start building their faith in the womb and see what Yah will do.

Count me count me in too. My sister said that she might memorize along with us, but she isn't promising anything. However, I would like to be on the accountability chart, so I will start memorizing when the day comes.

I think I will join this project, although with my other memory verses I will probably not totally follow the schedule. I have made myself a list of verses to memorize for the winter, and that will keep me pretty busy until March, so maybe I'll start then.

Ignore what I said in the previous blog conversation about this. I am happy to say I will be memorizing Elijah with Memverse!

Not only that, but I talked to my dad and my family will be studying Elijah during our evening devotions. But I may be the only member of my family who actually memorizes it.

Also, I have a friend who competed at Nationals with me. We've decided to memorize Elijah together off-line, meeting once a week to review. So we memorized 1 Kings 17:1-6 yesterday, and hopefully we'll have the whole of chapter 17memorized by next week. (We're trying to memorize fast so we can start Romans.)

Thanks so much for starting this, Mr. Walker. I can't wait to see what God will do through this!

There are a couple things that I would like to say. 1. Congratulations to Matthew, Erika and Phil for taking the second spot on the church leaderboard with the Elijah Project. Is anybody up to the task of passing them ? And I will be praying for all that undertake this project although it is too much for me to do right now. Remember God can increase your faith to a faith that is even more than the prophet Elijah. He was after all a man but a very Godly man. Also another good thing that you can take from this is he was outnumbered and probably considered a false prophet. Are we willing to stand up for God the way Elijah stood up for Him ? And what are other gods that are competing in your life ? root them out get rid of them. Again praying for all of you.

What a great encouragement, God's Bondslave! But I must say something in regards to your previous comment about Elijah not having the Holy Spirit. He did have the Holy Spirit! Maybe even in greater measure than we do, because God spoke to him directly (he was a prophet). All the Old Testament saints had the Holy Spirit, by the way - because there is no other way to believe unless the Holy Spirit guides our hearts!
Just wanted to make that clear.

how many verses does this schedule require you to memorize each day?

Rachel, it is 1 verse per day starting Dec 12th and going into May (unless you are Laura and her friends who may be done with everything by the time the rest of us start ch 18.) As always, the pace is not legalistic. We will support everyone at whatever pace they go.

Great to hear of the offline Elijah groups starting. I pray that others will prayerfully consider joining them. I am praying for 10 offline groups (I will lead at least 2 and possibly 3 or more if we get to Indonesia soon. Where are the others?)

PS I am in Beijing, China!!!!!!! ... Actually I am just in the airport for 2 hours about to board my flight to Manila to return to Jacky. However, I pray that someday, Lord willing, God will open the door for Jacky and I (and possibly others) to build on what Hudson Taylor started and impact this giant, influential, beautiful country with a passion for Scripture and a knowledge of and love for the true Biblical God through a new life in Jesus Christ!

First declaration!

Surreyhorse, I am curious who you have included in your "us". Do you have family or friends memorizing with you?

Kaitlyn and Laura, great to see you guys already declaring for the chart, not only ahead of schedule, but even a few days before the rest of us even get started. Laura, if your friend doesn't mind we would like to include him/her on the declaration chart.

I will soon be listing all the Memverse participants in "Elijah" and give some totals for how many are joining off memverse. I hope to now send out my Facebook invitations. Please pray that many will join from these. (I tend to get hundreds of initial "yes" clicks without much evidence of people following through.)

I would also like to list all off-line groups of 2 or more meeting or calling each other on a regular basis for mutual encouragement, inspiration and accountability. Can you let me know if you are in such a group?

All of you are in Jacky and my prayers as we get excited about memorizing together and lifting up others we know are also memorizing Elijah.

just curious but does anyone know anything about Bright Lights that just joined the church leaderboard at #11 ?

Seems to me that I have heard of it before from one of the young men (middle 20s) at church, but haven't got much of an idea what it's about...

@God's Bondslave: Bright Lights is a young ladies discipleship's groups. BRIGHT stands for "Being Radiant in Godliness, Holiness, and Testimony." There are groups across the USA and the members get together every so often, and have a Bible study or something like that. They have conferences with alot of the groups. I've decided to follow the chart! I was so excited this morning when I woke up, that as soon as I got out of bed and got a drink, I memorized 1 Kings 17:1 !!!! I felt like memorizing more, But I think I will stick to the chart :) I will be doing one verse of 1 peter too, so I think I'll be busy :D

Well, we sing hymns, make a craft, have a snack and go over the next lesson. And sometimes, when holidays come around, such as Christmas, we might go caroling or something. This year, for Christmas, we are going to a nursing home to give out cookies, sing Christmas carols and just bring Christmas cheer to the nursing home residents.

We meet every other Thursday. In fact, I'm going to my Bright Lights group this Thurday to go to the nursing home. I hope this was helpful and that you might be able to find a group closer to you.

Claire, I wanted to go Old Testament after 3 NT books. I have always loved Elijah and I and Jacky fell a little like Elijah in being dependant on God here in full time ministry in the Philippines and Indonesia. We are praying that God will give us Elijah's faith!

Hi @Phil, Yes, we do like to memorize as a family. We have been inspired both by your website and by the National Bible Bee. Last year was our first year for both. Before it was more like a verse per week, which seems wimpy now ;-) My husband and I memorized the Primary Timothy track last year and were really blessed. We have 3 BB Jrs who also enjoy the challenge of digging deeper. Thanks for the encouragement that is evident in your every post. God bless you and your growing family!

@InSoloChristo, You make an excellent point! It is so easy to be impressed by Elijah, but the widow and her son must have been heroes of faith as well! Could I feed a stranger before feeding my only son? I hope I'm never asked to do that-- I would probably fail that test....

Surreyhorse, I am thrilled that you and your family are enjoying Memverse and the Bible Bee. I too am a huge fan of both. I am curious how you first heard of each of them.

To clarify, I am not the owner of Memverse. Andy Vitus is both the founder and"owner" of Memverse. Alex Watt is his right hand man with technical computer stuff, Emeka is our talented graphic designer and the rest of us volunteer as we can to spread the word about Memverse, contribute blog comments, answer feedback questions, memorize, meditate on, obey, and love Scripture, etc.

The way Andy set it up and runs it, in a way all of us like to think of Memverse as owned by God and for His glory with each of us having part ownership in it as servants of our King and lovers/spreaders of His Word.

I first got hooked on Memverse when I saw how much it could encourage, inspire, and support our group memorizing 1 TIMOTHY. I am very much looking forward to it helping us with Elijah.

InSoloChristo, you make a great point about the widow and her son. I think sometimes it is easier to trust and obey God in poverty and desperation than it is in times of abundance and wealth. Common sense says it should be the other way around. If we have plenty, and especially if we see our plenty as a gift from our loving God, we should, in turn, lovingly be able to easily afford helping others as the Bible repeatedly and passionately commands us to do. (Although sadly much of popular modern "Christian" teaching forbids us from doing so until we have fully secured our and our children's future needs for years to come including a comfortable, stress-free, no need to trust God, "Christian" pre-retirement.)

Laura, Caleb, Kaitlyn and any others who may jump in and move in front of the group pace. We welcome and encourage you in finishing early and welcome you to post your declarations as you go. However, with the chart, I will only post one letter at a time for those close to the lead and I will likely keep the leaders at least somewhat close to the group pace.

@surreyhorse and Mr. Walker: I think that in today's culture the person would be a false "prophet", but back then, prophets were God's method of giving a message to his people because the whole canon of scripture was not completed.

@amy: Yes! It is fine if you join now! (Please do!) You might even be able to catch up! You can change your profile, setting your group as 'Elijah Project'.

my mom got inspired by reading Elijah and now she wants us to perform a play on it in april or may in fromt of all our friends. (groan) Fortunately, I get to be the narrator and don't have to act (yay! I don't like getting up in front of people.)

Just wondering, because I was thinking about joining the Elijah Project until BB 2012.

@Claire--The Elijah Project is now off the Church Leaderboard because of the recently inputted "Group Leaderboard," which is comprised of those groups which are not really considered as churches, but which some people would like to join anyway, such as the Elijah Project or the Bible Bee.

I'm also assuming that the Vredevoogd family has joined another group for the moment and may be coming back when the BB restarts next year (this is only an assumption, of course). :)

I think that my Dad would really like to join this group, but would we have to set our group as the "Elijah Project" to do it? He would be really encouraged by the competition (especially if I also joined). :)

@Mr. Walker: That sounds fine. I will be updating our progress once a week, since that's when we meet, but you can spread out the declarations over several days.

@ Amy: of course you can join now! We're all memorizing at different paces, but the goal is to encourage one another, no matter each person's stage.

On the topic of faith we should, in addition to Elijah, the widow and her son, remember Obadiah. To hide 100 people who were wanted dead, and to be head of the household - of the one who wanted them dead, is quite a heroic act of faith in God.

@AstroLeah & God's Maiden of Virtue: You certainly don't have to join the Elijah Project to do it - and we don't really need you anyway - but we certainly wouldn't mind you.

@All: I'm just curious to know what translation you use. I use ___. Hey, along those lines, I think there should be a translation leaderboard!

I like the 'traslation leaderboard' idea. (BTW, I use the ESV too.)

A translation leaderboard would be very interesting :) I also use the ESV.

Yes, I think a translation board could be interesting I use the KJV but I think there are probably too many people out there with the NIV. Just sayin, :) But on the other hand there are a lot of good memorizers out there that use the good old KJV.

My vote would be that a translation leaderboard for Memverse could likely be devisive. However, I believe translation groups are fine. In fact, anyone could start an "Elijah Project KJV" group. One thing we did with 1 TIMOTHY was have conference calls where everyone with the same translation could call in and encourage each other and quote together.

@ Phil Walker: If a translation leaderboard could be devisive, what do you call the "King James Only" group on the Group Leaderboard? :P

Personally I am fine with it. Those in it may want to change the name to "King James Version" and take off the only if they feel it offends people. However, I am not offended.

Maybe in the future, if a group hypothetically has discussions that are acceptable and encouraging to people in the group, but potentially offending to those outside the group, Memverse might be able to fix it where certain group's discussions don't show up on the "recent comments" page.

First, please respect the original blog posts and try to confine your comments to the original topic otherwise threads become unnecessarily long.

Second, at this time we aren't going to have a leader board based on translations. The primary purpose of the leader boards is to provide encouragement and some exceptionally light-hearted competition to spur one another on.

When I originally started Memverse I was under the impression that 100 verses was more than anyone would ever memorize. I was surprised as I had to continually move the upper limit on the number of memory verses higher until eventually it was removed altogether.

I added the 'Groups' leader board somewhat against my better judgment because it was requested so often. My hope is that it will encourage those who might not currently belong to a church, those who join intermittent memorization projects, and those who feel a close affiliation to a second group. I also hope that it will allow for the formation of smaller groups for those who belong to large churches.

Let's not start a long discussion on the various merits of all the different translations. Remember there is only one body with Christ at the head. In ten days we will celebrate his birth. Read Luke 2 in all the translations you can lay your hands on.

@All: I'm sorry. I regret ever bringing that up. My intent was that you could tell me what translation you used when you declared your verses, but I never said it - so I can take the blame for the idea. I also never really thought much about the other perspectives on the 'Translation Leaderboard'. (I also found one other reason: it would hardly fit on the toolbar!) I do think I might be a little to competitive, (the reason I'm trying to fly through "Elijah") but I sincerely hope this doesn't affect my comments - if it does, just tell me, and I'll try to change it. Sorry again.

@Andy: I will read Luke 2 in the ___ translation. It is coming up in the Victory Bible Reading Plan, which I use.

@Phil, sorry I missed your question earlier-- we learned about NBB through my brother, whose 6 kids were involved in it in 2010. We started taking memorizing to a new level then (although we were too late to join) and googled "scripture memorization help," which brought us to this wonderful site!

Please pray for people in this group. Pray that God might grant us strength, endurance, motivation and discipline to keep memorizing. Pray even more importantly, that the Scripture might be powerful in our lives and that God may be pleased on our meditation on His Truth through this project. Less importantly, but still worth praying about, you can also sneak in a short prayer that those on this list not on Memverse may discover the joy and benefit of Memverse and that Memverse may gain new strongholds of members through the Elijah Project.

AstroLeah, we would love to have you and your Dad join us. As others have said, you do not have to join the Elijah group on the group leaderboard to join the Elijah project. I will even probably leave the Elijah group soon to start the STT Setia group once I move to Indonesia. Also, we love having the Answers in Genesis/Creation Museum group. Is your Dad on staff with them?

Angela, great to have you join us. Do you have friends who might want to join you for the extra benefit of face to face offline encouragement?

Claire, great to read about your family's desire to act out Elijah. Our church did this about 12 years ago. If you have an about 6 foot guy playing Elijah, I would be glad to send you the "animal skin" and wig I used, which I've also used for John the Baptist.

When I get my next chance, "Elijah - Mighty Prophet of God" is the next major drama I want to write and direct. I pray that this experience of memorizing Elijah will help me in that process. I praise God for the 10 people from Fountain of Life Christian Community Church who have signed on to memorize Elijah. We are expecting several more (mostly youth and Sunday School age) to join them. Please pray for those yet to join and for the church as a whole that God would bless their faithfulness to, and passion for His Word, and would protect them from, and in any Satanic attacks and other challenges that will likely come their way during this challenge.

Is there another church or other group out there that would consider also memorizing Elijah together as a community of Scripture loving believers? .

@Mr. Walker: Yeah, really! After the story of the widow and her son, I think this is my favorite part in the story of Elijah!

I'm memorizing 1 Kings 18:25-28 today - I have a question that some of you may be able to answer biblically: Was it wrong for Elijah to mock the prophets to Baal?

I also just discovered the mission statement of Memverse. I really like it - especially the apostle's creed!

Good question. I won't attempt an answer in this comment; just wanted to point out a verse that came to mind when I read your question.

In Proverbs 1 we see the personification of wisdom standing in the street. She is calling out for people to come and receive wisdom from her. Many are foolish and will not come and to those she says: "I will also laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your dread comes." (vs 26)

This may or may not be relative to the question, but it just came to mind =)

That's a hard question to answer... Mocking usually isn't shown as a good thing in the Bible, if ever, but it doesn't seem to me that Elijah was really doing anything wrong here. I'll have to think about that...

InSoloChristo, you are way ahead of us, but I will throw my thoughts in anyway. I would say that possibly Elijah was ok with mocking as the false gods and their prophets deserve to be mocked and God often had His true prophets mock or declare mocking against the false prophets and false gods.

However, possibly Elijah got carried away and a little too proud and sure of himself during the mocking, which could have contributed to his quick collapse in faith just a few hours later.

@amy: I didn't think of that text, but now that you mention it, it dawned on me that maybe because Elijah was a prophet God had told him to mock them, as Mr. Walker points out. 'Wisdom' in Proverbs 1 really personifies wisdom, or in other words, Christ! So if Christ mocks them, then the Holy Spirit may have told Elijah to mock the prophets and Baal.

I'm not ready to declare another letter, but I've been thinking about Elijah mocking the prophets of Baal. I was thinking last night about 1 Kings 18:36:

And at the time of the offering of the oblation, Elijah the prophet came near and said, "O LORD, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that you are God in Israel, and that I am your servant, and that I have done all these things at your word.

Everyone is doing a great job on their memory work in 1 Kings...keep it up, everyone!

I would really like to join with you all in this great project, but right now I'm working on Philippians and 1 Thessalonians, and don't think that I should start memorizing something more. Maybe once I'm done, though, I might do it =)

OCTSRIS, you are not behind at all, but right on schedule. For the accountability chart, we ask that everyone keeps with the first name, first initial of the last name and the state or country. If you are concerned about safety or privacy, any of these may be fake (as long as you are not intentionally taking someone else's identity.) however we encourage people that are willing to use their real information.

I just wanted to say that three local churches within our denomination are participating in the third annual Bible Bee of our own. We call it the "Triple Tree Bible Bee" after the name of our church, which is on a Triple Tree Road. The study standards are much lower (the highest age group has 60 verses to memorize), but it is still a very fun activity! Courtney and I are not participating as contestants, and so we are volunteering to help with the choosing of the memory verses, etc. Along with the book of Mark, the contestants will be studying the story of Elijah this year! I came up with the idea, but got it from this project.

It looks as though I will be getting a late start, but I would enjoy working on the Elijah project, also! (But I will probably be going slower, and perhaps not declaring verses.)
