The Bible, the Bee, and the Family

Time Posted on April 05, 2012 User Alex Watt Comment 37 comments

If Christ holds the universe together by the Word of his power, why would we think it takes anything less to hold a family together? And even if Christian families know that only God's grace can make them effective as an embassy for Christ, are Christian families in the Word together and in prayer together to make their embassy vision a practical reality?

Learning to live as ambassadors of Christ is a life-long pursuit. As long as we're on earth, our mission is to "make disciples of all nations" (Matthew 28:19). Discipleship doesn't end with the family, but it does start there. Parents, particularly fathers, are instructed to bring their children up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord (Ephesians 6:4).

No matter where you are in life, I hope that you see the significance of the Christian family and the importance of helping families — not only our own, but also others — grow in the grace of God through the Word of God.

As I think about parents discipling their children, I think about the 2012 National Bible Bee. My favorite feature of this year's program is that there will "only" be two verse cards per week and approximately twenty minutes of planned Bible study per day. There are less verses over the summer than in years past. But I think the principle of "less is more" may prove true here: With less verses to memorize, there is more time to meditate. More families — really all families — can have a structured time for family discipleship through the Bible Bee, memorizing Scripture, praying together, and studying the Bible.

I encourage you to watch the video below and then pray about how you can encourage family discipleship in your family and your local church. I see several big opportunities:

  1. Parents using the Bible Bee as a tool to disciple their children. You can learn more about that on the Bible Bee's homepage — they have a nice overview of the program this year.
  2. Local churches and other ministries hosting a Bible Bee. More hosts are needed to enable more families to participate. To learn about what hosting entails, you can click here.
  3. Volunteers helping to host a local Bee.
  4. Prayer supporters: "Unless the LORD builds the house, those who build it labor in vain." (Psalm 127:1, ESV)
  5. Donors who believe that investing financially in the Bible Bee is a wise use of God's resources.

Again, the Bible Bee has a great website which you can visit to register now or learn more: www.BibleBee.org.

Memverse newsletters

Time Posted on November 24, 2011 User Phil Walker Comment 37 comments

We just sent out the Thanksgiving Memverse newsletter.   If you did not receive it and want to be added to the list to receive all future newsletter and news flashes, you can sign up through www.memverse.com/blog/main/A_Monthly_Memverse_Newsletter or by emailing Phil Walker at philjohn1558@yahoo.com

Below is a copy of the Thanksgiving Newsletter.

Dear Memverse friends,

As you and your family enjoy Thanksgiving, we want to share some of the things we are thankful for:

Most of all, we are thankful for God loving us and sending His Son to die for us that we might have forgiveness of sins and a new Life in Him.  We are thankful that we can deeply know God in all of His fullness through reading, meditating on, trusting, and obeying His Word!  We are thankful that God led Andy to start Memverse and for all the work Andy and others who have come along beside him have put into making Memverse such an enjoyable and valuable tool for memorizing and inspiring others to memorize God's precious Word.  We are thankful that God has led you to www.memverse.com and for the many of you who are spreading Memerse on to others you know.

We at Memverse are thankful for the completion of another wonderful year of the National Bible Bee.  42 of the 300 Finalists are on Memverse.  We want to congratulate all of them for making it this far and for their work in Nashville.  Our heartfelt CONGRATULATIONS go to:

Seniors: Christian Alexander, Josiah DeGraaf, Laura Hedstrom, Grace Mieczkowski, Marie Morris, Bethany Pentimone, Alex Watt, Abigail Brigham, Olivia Guillard, Rachel Eaton, Prasanth Venigalla, Nina Camillone, Darcy Arnall, Stephanie Hills, Elizabeth Ledford, Angela McCain, Melody Mieczkowski, Thomas Youngman, Matthew Staley, Seth Walley, Seth Lehman, Elanee Smythe = 22 finalists

Juniors: Nicolas Alexander, Zachary Baas, Hannah Del Toro, Clara Kho, Matthew Minica, Courtney Minica, Carissa Pentimone, Hannah Teeters, Kaitlyn Vredevoogd, Emily Brigham, Ben Watt, Allison Couch, Abigail Sutton, Alethea Leonard, Kerestel Leonard, Monica Duitsman, Hannah Leary; Joshua Bontrager = 18 finalists

Primary: Kara Buckner; Abigail Lehman = 2 finalists

Among the 45 to advance to Friday's "sudden death" competition were Memverse members: Olivia Guillard, Rachel Eaton, Laura Hedstrom, Matthew Staley, Hannah Leary, Joshua Bontrager, Abigail Lehman and Kara Buckner.  Out of these, Hannah, Laura, Abigail and Joshua were among the 17 to advance to Saturday's competition, and Laura Hedstrom was awarded 3rd place in the senior division!!!

I very much enjoyed taking in the competition, hearing the Scripture getting quoted and dreaming big God-size dreams of how He might use His Word in your lives.  I also enjoyed meeting many of you in person for the first time.  It is neat to see the impact the National Bible Bee has had on so many families.  I hope many of you will be able to join again in 2012 and I also hope to have similar events someday in the Philippines, Indonesia and in other countries around the world.

100,000

We at Memverse are thankful for the milestone we reached on Oct. 19th, 2011.  Memverse began February 28th, 2009.In the past 31 months, countless people have been blessed by the encouragement, inspiration, accountability and helps it provides in memorizing God's precious Word.  Oct 19th, we passed the 100,000 verses milestone.  A great feature of Memverse is to be able to see the current total at all times on the home page.  In prime memverse memorizing time around 8:00 - 9:00am EST, you can often see the live total increasing before your eyes.

On the home page, you can see highlights people reach under the heading "Recently on Memverse"  Did you know that the title is also a link? That's right. If you click on "Recently on Memverse" it shows you the exact verses that have been memorized and when they were memorized. What an encouragement this has often been to me when I see my friends and people I don't know actively memorizing Scripture I love.

Extra Motivation: As awesome and thrilling as memorizing Scripture can be, at times it can also be challenging in our instant gratification, physical world to stay focused on the eternal, spiritual benefits of getting to know Almighty God deeper through His Word.  We at Memverse are thankful for our friend Jim Woychuk of Scripture Memory Fellowship adding an extra incentive while also feeding our souls with Godly wisdom and truth.  SMF is offering to send a free book to everyone who memorizes at least 200 verses on memverse, and will give a free scholarship week of Scripture memory camp to 5 memverse users each year who have memorized at least 500 verses. We praise God for SMF partnering with us in this way. We encourage you to learn more about Scripture Memory Fellowship (Formerly BMA - Bible Memory Association founded by Dr. N.A. Woychuk) through their www.scripturememoryfellowship.org website.

Memverse is thankful for a new partnership with Julie Alvarez of www.scripturestickies.com who runs monthly contests exclusively for Memverse members, runs open contests that Memverse members have enjoyed participating in, and offers discounts for Memverse members who order Scripture Stickies to help memorize and/or share with friends.  You can learn all the details through her blog page www.memverse.com/blog/main/Scripture_Stickies_endorses_Memverse

We are thankful that John Tice and his friends at www.impresskids.com have worked with us so that Memverse now has our very own page on their site.  You can let me know what passage you want to work on in what translation and I can put it up for you to work on using their games.  Currently available at www.impresskids.com/my/place/71 are:

KJV  GENESIS 1; PSALM 119:1-16, 17-32; ROMANS 12: TITUS 2; 1 PETER 1; 2;

As always, we would love to hear from you. What would you like to see in a future Memverse newsletter?  What do you like most about Memverse?  Do you have any ideas that could make Memverse even better?  Do you have any creative ideas for letting others know about the encouragement, inspiration, and help they can find on Memverse?

May God richly bless you as you get to know Him better and better through His Word.

We wish you all a wonderful THANKSGIVING with your friends and family,

In Christ, Phil Walker  philjohn1558@yahoo.com

First, good luck to all the Bible Bee contestants. We trust that this will be the start of a lifetime of committing the Bible to memory.

If you are attending, there are going to be three Memverse sessions in the computer lab. We don't have exact times but you should see them on the schedule.

We included the live event broadcast of the finals on Saturday morning in this blog post.

Bible Bee Practice Tests

Time Posted on November 07, 2011 User Alex Watt Comment 69 comments

Matthew Minica kindly developed practice tests for Bible Bee National Qualifiers and asked us to post them on Memverse for him. Here are the tests along with a note from Matthew:

Last Saturday, we went to visit our friends, the Smithes, who have a son Joshua going to the National Bible Bee as a Senior. We had a couple of their friends come over and held a mock Bible Bee with the three of us going to Nationals: Joshua, Courtney, and I. My dad suggested that we should make a practice test for each other, and I caught onto it right away. A couple days later, I had an idea: Why not share about this on Memverse!? So here is that practice test, all finished and ready to be administered.

Division Practice Test Answer Sheet
Junior PDF | DOC PDF | DOC
Senior PDF | DOC PDF | DOC

There are a few things I would like to note: First, if you are a Primary who would like to take this test, I apologize for not making a Primary version of the test. The reason I did not is that I could not see any Primaries who were currently active on Memverse.

Second, the only difference between the Junior and Senior versions is 16 questions about some Level 3 passages; otherwise, the Junior and Senior tests are exactly the same.

Also, to take the test you will need the bubble sheet available here on the Bible Bee website.

I hope you enjoy this practice test and that it will really help and encourage you in your studying!

Update 11/11/11: Anna and Grace Mieczkowski (Senior National qualifier) have also created two awesome practice tests to share; one is for Primaries and the other is for Seniors. Juniors are advised to take the Primary test.

Thanks again, Matthew, Anna, and Grace, for working on these tests and sharing them. Blessings to all studying for Nationals!

Post Bible Bee

Time Posted on September 02, 2011 User Alex Watt Comment 88 comments

On August 27, many of you competed in Local Bible Bees across the United States. On Wednesday, August 31, those of you in the National track learned whether you will be traveling to Nashville for the National competition as a competitor. Today, you're probably either getting ready for a more intense competition or going back to "normal" life. Either way, we want to congratulate you for your diligence in memorizing Scripture! Every hour we spend now establishing a more fervent walk with our gracious God through family discipleship, Scripture memorization, and prayer is of great value and can change the course of our lives and the lives of those around us for God's glory. Paul reminded Timothy in 1 Timothy 4:8 that "physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come." We do not memorize merely for information, but we seek the truth of God's Word because it is a "lamp to our feet and a light for our path," a comfort to our souls, the Sword of the Spirit we need to kill sin in our own lives, and the way to truly knowing Him.

When the Bible Bee competition ends for you, we pray you would find the beginning of a new chapter in your life filled with the grace of God through Scripture memorization and intentional time spent with Him. (Dakota challenges us about how Christians should budget time here.) Consider memorizing a book of the Bible to see how verses and chapters fit together with the larger scope of the book's theme. Some are memorizing 1 Peter to give themselves a fuller understanding of that book which they studied over the summer while preparing for the Bee. This is a great choice. You can check out that project.

We also have been encouraged lately to memorize one of the most amazing books of the Bible: Romans. This book is, to quote from J. I. Packer's Knowing God:

... the high peak of Scripture, however you look at it. Luther called it "the clearest gospel of all." "If a man understands it," wrote Calvin, "he has a sure road opened for him to the understanding of the whole Scripture." Tyndale, in his preface to Romans, linked both thoughts, calling Romans "the principal and most excellent part of the New Testament, and most pure Euangelion, that is to say glad tidings and that we call gospel, and also a light and a way in unto the whole Scripture." All roads in the Bible lead to Romans, and all views afforded by the Bible are seen most clearly from Romans, and when the message of Romans gets into a person's heart there is no telling what may happen.

If this is true, we should seek to understand Romans and memorize it. To see a wonderful calendar for memorizing Romans from September 1, 2011, through December 31, 2012, please choose a file format: PDF or DOC. (Courtesy of the Alexander family - thank you.) At one verse a day, with separate review days built in, you can memorize Romans in just over a year.

Maybe the Bible Bee isn't over for you, and you are preparing for Nationals. If so, we want to help you. Phil Walker has prepared materials to help those studying the additional 100, 200, or 300 verses (depending on your age division: Primary, Junior, or Senior) in the NIV 1984 version. Not only are there documents for each division with the verses printed word-for-word or prompterized like he kindly did for us last time, but there is also a document containing a game you can play. To play the game, you will need to print it out and cut each page into word strips, keeping the strips grouped by passages. Then scramble several (or all, if you're up for a big challenge!) of the passage groups together. By racing against time as you and your friends arrange the verse texts in the correct order, you can learn your verses for Nationals and have a lot of fun. Please see the appropriate links below:

Division Originals Prompterized Game Study Stack

Junior PDF | DOC PDF | DOC PDF | DOC NIV
Senior PDF | DOC PDF | DOC PDF | DOC NIV

If anyone has resources for other Bible Bee versions, please let us know in the comments and we can post them as well. (Phil expects to also have Study Stack sets created for the new verses as well, and we will link to those as they become available. Thanks for putting all this together for us!)

We are also planning to hold a few more Bible Bee Live Quizzes before this marathon is over. We would like to hold at least one with verses you studied for the Local Bee targeted at all Bible Bee participants, regardless of whether you've qualified for Nationals. Please check back sometime next week when we will have more information.

Update 09/05: We have determined dates for six more Bible Bee Live Quizzes. On each of these dates we will hold a quiz (and maybe a re-run of that quiz) starting at 4:00 p.m. EDT — except for November 11, which begins at 4:00 p.m. EST. Please see below and mark your calendars! This post will be updated before each quiz with a link to it. We hope you can attend one or more quizzes. If for any reason we need to cancel a quiz, we will do our best to let you know as soon as possible. The first quiz will contain material from what was studied for the local competition, so as to allow anyone in the Bible Bee to participate (some Primary, Junior, and Senior verses), but after that we will focus on verses for the National qualifiers with some review from earlier material.

Preparing for Bible Bee quiz

Time Posted on July 14, 2011 User Alex Watt Comment 164 comments

The Friday, July 15, Bible Bee quiz will be at 4:00 PM EDT on a new part of the site for live quizzes. We are still working on this but wanted to have something to try out for the first time publicly. If you can join us, that would be great! Questions will be from Week 6 (with one exception) and will be about 2/3 Primary verses. We hope the quiz will go faster with the automated system. As you prepare for the quiz, please take a few minutes now to upgrade your browser. This is very important as we are using newer technologies that are not compatible with some older browsers.

If you're not sure how to upgrade to the most recent version of your browser, please visit your Browser's Help Resources. There, you should find the most up-to-date instructions on how to upgrade to the most recent version:

Also, please make sure that the Bible version you have set in your Account Profile is the Bible Bee version you want to use for the quiz. While you're there, you may want to take your version out of your display name as this will no longer be necessary.

If you have any questions, please let us know. To enter the quiz room, please click here. There is not much to see until we start. At 4:00 PM EDT we will start the quiz, but please make sure you arrive early so you can participate. It seems that the software does not handle late arrivals very well... If you cannot make the beginning of the quiz, you should at least have the page open on your computer so that you can jump in when you are available. Hope you can attend! Thanks.

Upcoming Bible Bee quizzes

Time Posted on July 05, 2011 User Alex Watt Comment 624 comments

The concept of Bible Bee quizzes on Memverse seems to be quite popular. :) Please mark your calendars and spread the word about upcoming quizzes: Friday, July 8, at 4:00 PM EDT; Friday, July 15, at 4:00 PM EDT; and Friday, July 22, at 4:00 PM EDT. I plan to lead the first quiz on this blog post (materials will be from Week 5, mainly Primary verses with a few Junior as well); the later two quizzes will each probably have a separate blog post to run on and other volunteers will probably run them. Update: Bethany will be running the July 22nd quiz and we are still looking for anyone who would like to run the quiz on the 15th. :) Thanks.

We expect each quiz to last about an hour and there will be fifteen questions. For ten of the questions (the first five and the last five), I will post a comment with the text of a Bible Bee verse passage in all five Bible Bee approved versions (NIV, ESV, KJV, NKJV, and NASB) and you will have a minute to post the reference. For five of the questions (they will be in the middle of the quiz), I will post a reference and you will have several minutes to respond with the reference at the beginning, the verse text in the middle, and the reference again at the end. Please also include your version to make it easier for scoring. For example, if I comment with Genesis 1:1, the correct response would be something like this:

Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Genesis 1:1 NIV

If you do not include your version in each comment, it makes it more difficult for the volunteers helping to score. Omitting a reference or your version will cost you a point for each occurrence.

You can receive a maximum of 12 points for each type of question. For details on the scoring for "recitations", please see below. For the questions where you post a reference for the verse text given, you will receive four points for the correct book, four points for the correct chapter, and four points for the correct verse number. For example, if you posted 2 John 1:9 instead of 1 John 1:9, you would receive 8 points.

Over half of the questions will be Primary verses and several may be drawn from the Junior verses.

If you would like to help score, please let me know after we finish the quiz by posting a comment with the text "helpscore" in it. Otherwise, it is difficult to keep track of who is helping. If you indicate that you would like to help score, I will have information about how to score and will assign you to a few people. You can then look for their answers on the page (CTRL + F in many browsers allows you to search and find their name and comments) and tabulate them on your computer. When you have a final score for a person, you will please post it in a comment with their name. When all scores are returned, this post will be updated with that information.

If you plan to be participating in the first quiz or have any questions, please indicate that in a comment below (unless you have already done so on the other blog post). I also welcome any suggestions. Hope to see you there! Thanks.

How we score recitations: The maximum score for a recitation is 12 points. Like the Bible Bee, leaving off a reference at the beginning or end of a "recitation" is a 1-point deduction, as is any one word error (one word omission, insertion, or change - like swapping "created" for "made"). You see above the correct response for reciting Genesis 1:1. Here is a 6-point recitation in NIV:

In the beginning He created the earth and heavens. Genesis 1:1

We start with 12 points, then evaluate the recitation: one point is subtracted for forgetting the reference at the beginning, another point is subtracted for using "He" in place of "God", two points are subtracted for switching "heavens" and "earth" (it was two one-word changes) and another point for leaving out "the" (second-to-last word). Additionally, we subtract a point because the response did not include the version. Please note that you cannot count more than 12 errors - i.e., no one ends up with a negative score on a passage. If you want to help score but have questions on how this works, please ask us for clarification.

Update: Thanks to Zachary Baas, Sarah, Phil Walker, AmyV, Hannah Cupcake, Simeon, Christian Alexander, and Rachel Crosswhite for helping with scoring. Below are the point totals. We even had a three-way tie (see the 88 pointers)! You all did great. I was impressed that we had contestants from Primary Timothy Track to Senior National Track and I think almost everywhere in between. I recognize that not all of you had to study some of these verses, but you all did fantastic! Congratualations! May every word that comes from the mouth of God truly be our bread. I want to highlight a quote from C.S. Lewis that was also part of our Sword Study recently:

[T]he Church exists for nothing else but to draw men into Christ, to make them little Christs. If they are not doing that, all the cathedrals, clergy, missions, sermons, even the Bible itself, are simply a waste of time. God became Man for no other purpose. It is even doubtful, you know, whether the whole universe was created for any other purpose.

Lewis, C.S. Mere Christianity. New York: HarperOne, 1980. Print.

May our study of Scripture be diligent and may it lead others to Jesus. If we are keeping it to ourselves, it is tragically a waste of time. But if we are doing it for God and letting the Truth influence every area of our lives so that others are being drawn to Him, it is because He has begun a work in us that He will continue to use for His glory (Phil 1:6), and that is no waste! Keep it up, all!

Josiah - 20 points
Simeon - 28 points
Simeon's sister - 28 points
Lauren Watt - 28 points
Olivia - 36 points
Clara K. - 36 points
BrookeNicole - 60 points
Ranch4Christ - 72 points
Rachel - 74 points
Emma - 88 points
Jamie - 88 points
BibleBeeJunior11 - 88 points
Hannah Cupcake - 89 points
Angela - 96 points
Phil Walker - 102 points
Rachel Crosswhite - 108 points
Sarah - 108 points
ChampionBuilders - 120 points
SavedByGrace - 132 points
Abigail Grace - 139 points
AmyV - 148 points
Christian Alexander - 150 points
Zachary Baas - 156 points

Thanks to Christian Alexander for catching a scoring mistake I made: I was giving 15 points maximum for references. This should be fixed now. If anyone else notices any errors, please let us know and we will work to rectify it as quickly as possible. Thanks.

July 1 Bible Bee quiz

Time Posted on July 01, 2011 User Alex Watt Comment 640 comments

Ben Watt is hosting the July 1st Bible Bee practice quiz at 4:00 PM EDT (8:00 PM GMT). We will use this blog post for the first one. We expect the quiz to last a little over half of an hour and there will be fifteen questions. For ten of the questions (the first five and the last five), I will post a comment with the text of a Bible Bee verse passage in all five Bible Bee approved versions (NIV, ESV, KJV, NKJV, and NASB) and you will have a minute to post the reference. Please also include your version to make it easier for scoring. For example, if he comments with Genesis 1:1, the correct response would be something like this:

Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Genesis 1:1 NIV

If you do not include your version in each comment, it makes it more difficult for the volunteers helping to score. Omitting a reference or your version will cost you a point for each occurrence.

You can receive a maximum of 12 points for each type of question. For details on the scoring for "recitations", please see below. When you have a final score for a person, you will please post it in a comment with their name. When all scores are returned, this post will be updated with that information.

If you plan to be participating in the quiz or have any questions, please indicate that in a comment below (unless you have already done so on the other blog post). I also welcome any suggestions. Hope to see you there! Thanks.

We are working on a new Memverse live quiz feature with automatic scoring for use in the next few weeks.

Thanks Ben for running this quiz!

Comment guidelines: Please stay on topic as this helps everyone who scores your answers. Let's see how many people we can have participating with as few comments as possible. :) Thank you for your cooperation!

Please note: As Andy mentioned in the comments, please make sure you have 8 verses in your account (Learning or Memorized) so that your comments do not have to be approved.

Bible Bee practice quiz

Time Posted on June 20, 2011 User Alex Watt Comment 598 comments

We will be holding two more Bible Bee practice quizzes here on Memverse in the near future: this Friday, June 24, and next Friday, July 1, both at 4:00 PM EDT or 8:00 PM GMT. We will use this blog post for the first one. Each quiz should last about half of an hour and there will be fifteen questions.

I hope to score very much like the Bible Bee for errors in the verse "recitations" (the middle five questions).

(I plan to help orchestrate scoring for both quizzes.) Otherwise, it is difficult to keep track of who is helping. Having the "experience" of doing this once before, I think I have a better idea of how to do it.

If you plan to be participating in the quiz or have any questions, please indicate that in a comment below (unless you have already done so on the other blog post). I also welcome any suggestions. We are working on a new quizzes section of the site to make this even better in the future. Hope to see you there! Thanks.

Please note: Sarah will be running the Friday, June 24th quiz. Thank you!

Comment guidelines: Please stay on topic as this helps everyone who scores your answers. Thank you for your cooperation!

Update (June 24): We had a great quiz today! Thank you to Sarah for running the quiz, scoring over half the questions, and tabulating the results. Thank you also to Bethany, Ranch4Christ, Hannah Cupcake, and Ben Watt for their help with scoring. Now for the scores:

Charity Harrell - 20 points
Stephen - 22 points
David Stelzl Jr. - 44 points
Lauren Watt - 53 points
Super401 - 63 points
Hannah Cupcake - 76 points
Joshua Harrell - 88 points
Rachel Crosswhite - 96 points
BibleBeeJunior11 - 107 points
Alex Watt - 112 points
Ranch4Christ - 124 points
Ben Watt - 143 points
SavedByGrace - 147 points
Christian Alexander - 152 points
Bethany - 167 points
Carissa - 177 points
Jamie - 180 points

Congratulations to all of you! Good job! Like we said last time, the most important thing is not your score in a quiz, but hiding God's Word in your heart. I pray all of you are doing that and hope to see many of you next week!

Tagging Bible Bee Verses

Time Posted on June 01, 2011 User Andy Comment 35 comments

I think it would be a great idea if all the Bible Bee verses were tagged in a consistent fashion. If everyone follows last year's most popular approach to tagging the Bible Bee verses that would mean we would use:

Bible Bee 2011 Level 1

Bible Bee 2011 Level 2

Bible Bee 2011 Level 3

Any thoughts?
