Chuck Swindoll on the importance of memorizing the bible:

“I know of no other single practice in the Christian life more rewarding, practically speaking, than memorizing Scripture. . . . No other single exercise pays greater spiritual dividends! Your prayer life will be strengthened. Your witnessing will be sharper and much more effective. Your attitudes and outlook will begin to change. Your mind will become alert and observant. Your confidence and assurance will be enhanced. Your faith will be solidified”

(Growing Strong in the Seasons of Life  p. 61).

Who ever came up with this web site, I want to thank you. I am 57 years old and a born-again Christian for nearly 20 years, but I have never taken the time or had the interest to memorize scripture. Then I took an 18 week discipleship class at my church which encouraged memorizing several verses each week, so I took the challenge. Learning verses has become such a daily routine with me; every time I get into the car, I practice all my verses (or as many as my destination will allow). This site has really helped me to progress on my own and hold me accountable for learning new ones. This has become such a passion to me, that sometimes I'll stay up late at night just so it's "the next day" so I can go over my memory verses. This site is now the first thing I do when I get on the computer rather than checking email. Thank you so much.

Andy, it is great to see our church leaders endorse and promote the importance and value of Scripture memory. My favorite quote about Scripture memory is credited to Pres Theodore Roosevelt who said, "A thorough knowledge of the Bible is more valuable than a college education." What if our churches, Christian schools, home school groups, and colleges believed that quote and were prepared to act on the truth of it! May God get all the praise as more and more people discover and share the priceless treasure of Scripture.

Wow. My appreciation of Teddy just skyrocketed. That is so cool to know that he said that. But it makes total sense! If you were the smartest person in the world, but didn't know the Bible thoroughly, you would have so many trials and afflictions from God to keep you humble or theologically correct. Even more so, if you weren't even a Christian!
