Getting to Know You: Introduce Yourself

Time Posted on April 11, 2010 User Phil Walker

Hi.  My name is Phil Walker.  I teach math and Bible and coach basketball, volleyball, and Bible Bowl at Hannibal Christian Academy in Hannibal, MO.  For the past 20 years my main passion and life calling has been Scripture memory: discovering, interacting with, and learning to trust, love, obey, serve, and worship the true Biblical God through His Word; and encouraging, inspiring and equipping others to do the same.  Scripture memory venues I use, endorse, and praise God for include: MEMVERSE, the National Bible Bee, listening to the Scripture on cd, Bible Bowl, Bible quizzing, the annual Scriptorium in Hannibal, MO, Scripture songs (Thy Word Creations, GT and the Halo Express, NIV Kid's club, Pilgrim songs, etc.), Scripture Memory Fellowship (formerly Bible Memory Association), Dramatic Scripture presenters like Marquis Laughlin (Acts of the Word), and Quiz Pro.

I send out a daily devotional email based on a key verse of every chapter of the New Testament, and a "less than daily" devotional based on every chapter of the Old Testament.  The most common theme of these devotionals is using Scripture to challenge today's "Trivial Gospel" (which has no need of, or interest in Scripture memory).  I would be glad to add anyone on to the list whose email inbox is not already overflowing.  I have written 3 Biblical dramas that are on youtube:  Sermon on the Mount (2006)  www.youtube.com/watch?v=4NkVvmbo-ho    Jesus-Masterful Teacher (2008) www.youtube.com/watch?v=4EUrqo6U2Uc  and Job: Suffering Servant of God (2009) www.youtube.com/watch?v=7J4qGFimTWo   (There is purposely no copyright on any of these plays, so you may use them and even change them to meet your needs however you wish.  The Sermon on the Mount in particular has a lot of scenes that can be used as stand alone skits).  I had the opportunity to speak at a Geneva College chapel Sept 12th, 2007 on the "Outrageous Claims of the Bible" www.geneva.edu/object/chapel_audio_07_08.html   I would love your feedback to any of these thoughts in the plays or the chapel message.

When GALATIANS 2:20, which I had memorized in high school at Faith Academy in the Philippines came back to me 7 years later (the summer after my first year teaching in a Christian school) to lead me to put a saving faith in Jesus Christ, I instantly had a passion to discover what else God had to say in His incredible Word.  I was also excited to share in this pursuit with other Christians who were also excited about getting to know God better and better through His Word.  However, many times it seemed like no one else was interested.  Andy had not yet made Memverse, and it was a strange feeling to wonder if I was the only one who actually believed the Bible was worth memorizing.  Since then God has brought many others into my life.

I hope we can use memverse to its fullest potential as we inspire, encourage, and equip each other in our pursuit of knowing and trusting our true, Biblical God.  I would be glad to interact with any of you for mutual encouragement in Scripture memory.  My email is philjohn1558@yahoo.com.  My phone # is (573)822-4015 and my currently mostly dead web site is www.scripture-memory-support.org.  We can also interact all together through the memverse Facebook group   http://www.facebook.com/#!/group.php?gid=261110551457&ref=ts  My biggest current burden is the lack of Scripture memory in Christian schools and especially on college campuses.  I know I am biased, but I believe EVERY Christian college and EVERY Christian outreach/discipleship group on secular colleges should inspire, encourage, equip, and expect professing Christian students to memorize Scripture.  Now, it seems almost non-existent in the face of today's Trivial Gospel and obsession with changing the message to attract our post modern world.  I would love for you to join me in praying for a revival of spiritual truth, and I would love to hear from anyone involved in Scripture memory in our schools and colleges

I often wonder who these other people and groups are on memverse.  What other exciting Scripture memory is going on around the world?  I invite you to introduce yourself, let us know what you are memorizing, why you are memorizing, and anything else that could edify, inspire and encourage a group of Scripture enthusiasts.

Hope Aderman

Hi, I'm Hope Aderman. Thanks for the idea of getting to know one another. It is so encouraging to meet other people who care about memorizing God's Word.

Our whole family is working with Memverse. We were in Bible Bee last year and then learned about this. It has been such a blessing and encouragement to our family. We have worked on verses before as a family, but once we learned them, we moved on to new verses, so we quickly lost the old. With Memverse, the kids keep repeating the verses, so they are cemented in their minds. Husband and I and three of our children are working on verses, some verses we are all working on, some have chosen differently. It is exciting for the kids to see the verses move from their learning status to memorized. It is encouraging to us as parents to see how many verses our children can learn when they are young: 10, 6, and 4 years old. Our family and my father make up the Community Bible Chapel group.

Rebecca King

Hi, I'm Rebecca King and thank you, Phil for letting others know about Memverse. It's really good to meet other people who also like to memorize scripture. I would like to say a big THANK YOU to Andy for creating this site and maintaining it!!!

I probably was inspired to memorize Scripture by my Father who has memorized the entire New Testament and parts of the Old Testament. My memories of my Dad can hardly go back far enough to not remember him carrying around a pocket full of verse cards to review whenever he could squeeze in a few minutes - often while he was out walking. Now we are onto the "new way" with our computers to help us keep up the review work.

I have always memorized Bible verses from family devotions through school (Christian) work, but I started memorizing in earnest in 1997 when my husband and I decided to memorize Psalm 139 together. We can still recite it and lately we both memorized Matthew 5, 6 & 7 together. It makes it alot of fun to memorize verses together as we can recite them to each other anywhere now.

All of a sudden after that first memory work with my husband (in 1997) as I was reading through the Bible that next year (1998) the Lord started putting thoughts in my mind (or maybe I just started listening) - I just have to memorize these verses because they are so magnificient or I need to know these verses because of what is going on in my life personally or... anyway, I got quite a collection of passages of scripture and have continued to add to and fill in over the years. I liked the description of "Swiss Cheese" approach to memory because that is quite often how I memorized.

Anyway, scripture memory is such a wonderful part of my life - it is stabilizing and encouraging and greatly helps me to meditate on God's word and it also just helps me to know where verses are in the Bible. We travel quite a bit and have lived overseas but where ever I go and whatever I am doing I have my verses to review and it's hard to explain how good that makes me feel inside. Thank you Lord!!!!!

Rachel

Hi! I'm Rachel. I did Bible Bee last year and loved it, but I've been memorizing some Scripture for longer than that. I think that I really started memorizing verses with AWANA, in the T&T program. It was the 3-D stickers that motivated me, I'll admit, and the satisfaction of doing it faster than everyone else. I was pretty self-righteous, but at least some of the verses are still in my brain somewhere.

The year after, our family decided that we would try a whole book for memorization. We decided to try 1 John, because our pastor was preaching on it at the time. Note to beginning memorizers: Do NOT start with 1 John for lack of a better book. It's repetitive and a HARD book to memorize. It was also very beneficial, so maybe that project wasn't such a bad idea. I can only recite bits and pieces of the book, but it was and is very important in my Christian walk.

The next year, we memorized James. About halfway through the year, though, we heard about Bible Bee and decided to switch and memorize in the NIV for that. So I've got 3-5 in the NIV, and 1-2 sort of in the NASB. I'm glad to say that the NIV parts of James I have really held onto--we practiced a LOT and did a dramatic presentation of it at our church, and even now I can hear my siblings reciting their parts in my head.

And then: Bible Bee. If you're in the age range, I HIGHLY recommend doing that. It was a lot of work, don't get me wrong. But it was totally worth it on a number of levels. It was a contest--I love contests. They really motivate me. That might not be true for everyone, but it definitely gave me a drive to do well. The verses were excellent choices, as well; it was like having someone else choose my memorization for a very long time. I began a memorization partnership where we would recite verses to each other in 1 John, and that continued through Bible Bee. It really increased my efforts.

The last six weeks before Nationals were perhaps the best--I just had so much Scripture in my head and was really envitalized by the whole thing. It's very satisfying to have someone cite a Scripture that you know, or realize that a worship song comes word-for-word from three Psalms, all of which you have memorized. And then Nationals... I was eliminated the first day and didn't watch many semifinal rounds but WOW did those Primaries know their stuff. The most touching moment, I though, was when one of them was called on to recite Psalm 8... "from the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise." Wow. Just wow.

Leah

Hi, I am Leah Wuestenberg. Thank you to those of you who have shared your stories. I am so inspired by them. I am 57 years young and just began memorizing scripture last year in a discipleship class at my church. I enjoyed it so much that I took my cards everywhere I went, so that when I pulled out of the garage and closed the door it just became automatic to start quoting scripture. And when I stumbled upon Memverse in November, I was just thrilled! Being a retired school teacher and both kids in college, I really had no reason to get up at a certain time every morning. But with Memverse, I was so excited to get out of bed and start working on my verses. Many nights I stayed up late so I could work on the next day's verses; I'm sure many of you can relate to that! Now I have my husband hooked on Memverse too and I hope to have both our children involved soon.

Many thanks to Andy and Phil and everyone else who was instrumental in providing such an awesome program!

John Henderson

Hi, I'm John Henderson from Toronto Canada, I'm an "oldie" too, just turned 51. I have been actively memorizing Scripture for about 4 years. We have a thriving work among the many mainland Chinese that have come to our city. We currently have a house church numbering about 40. We have a men's bible study and the men are encouraged to memorize Scripture each week. We all recite our verses, they do it in Mandarin, I do it in English.
I also use Esword's memory utility to help memorize, and I also use Scripture Memory system for windows. Both of these programs along with Memverse, help me to review what has already been memorized.

All you young people who are zealous in memorizing the Scriptures, good work, keep memorizing. You are a real encouragement to us who are older.

Do any of you use other methods or computer programs in your memory work?

Isaac

Hi, I'm Isaac. I'm Hope Aderman's son. I'm 10 years old and I'm really excited about learning stuff on Memverse. I was in the Bible Bee. I got first place for my local round, but I didn't make it to the Nationals. Bible Bee was very fun. The only full chapter I memorized during Bible Bee was Psalm 8. Now I know more chapters thanks to Memverse. I think it's important to memorize verses because its God's Word, so then we will know what God says for us to do.
Just like Rachel and Naomi, I'm homeschooled too!

Laurel

Hi All! :)

I'm Laurel from British Columbia, Canada, and though I also am 50 (as of yesterday... ;D) I don't consider myself old! :D :D

I started memorizing seriously almost three years ago and I have completed James, Galatians, and all the words in red in Matthew. Near the end of Matthew I was realizing just red wasn't good enough, so when I started on Mark I decided to do the whole thing.

My goal is to be like Naomi's great-grandpa and memorize the whole thing.... Lofty goal, but I've got to start somewhere and Memverse had made things much easier than it was before. I have been an avid reader of God's word since I was saved 30 years ago, having read through numerous versions multiple times. That has made it easier to learn whole books than it otherwise would have been, because the words are there in my mind without really knowing it. I am grateful to my God and Father and my Lord Jesus Christ for this drive to memorize.

My only regret is I didn't start 30 years ago and bring my children along with me. We also homeschooled, and had a memory verse once a week... but now I see how much more we could have done.

Thanks again, Andy, for making this available to us. And thanks for the encouraging words from those who have written in so far! :)

Dakota Lynch

Hey. My name is Dakota! I'm a Christian who believes that memorizing Scripture is more that just a privilege; it is a God-given obligation. I have been memorizing for about a year and a half, but recently I've really been pushing myself a lot harder, and it has definitely been worth the extra effort. I am so thankful for memverse, because it's much easier than the old method I used of dragging out dozens and dozens of index cards.

I have personally found to be true the words of David in Psalm 119:165: "Great peace have they which love Thy law..." Praise the Lord for His Holy Word, and the great peace that comes from memorizing it!

"To the church of God . . . to those sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints together with all those who in every place call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours." 1 Cor. 1.2

I'm almost 15, and I live on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. I'm doing the Bible Bee this year, and that's how I found Bible Bee, by looking for memorizing helps. And there seems to be an emerging trend: I'm homeschooled also!! I might say more later, but it's curfew!! lol

Thank you very, very much for this website!!! I can't wait to start memorizing my own verses after the Bible Bee, but of course that is and awesome opportunity for memorization as well. I only had about 20 verses memorized two months ago, but now, thanks to the BB and Memverse, I have almost 200!!!

My dad is an Orthodox Presbyterian pastor. I'd have to say. . . my favorite passage is Colossians 1:9-12 ---
"And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God. May you be strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy, giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light."

Very practical and encouraging.

Chris

Hello...anybody home?
I know this post may be dead, but I am new to this site and wanted to go ahead and introduce myself. My name is Chris Stallings. I am blessed by God to be counted among his people. I became a believer at the age of 7 and have been brought up in the church. I am a Baptist by denomination, but (hold your stones) I have a sincere passion for pursuing Christ. I would like to think that I found this site at just the right moment, but I almost certain that this site found me. I have been in the process of recording the Scriptures that I know in a spreadsheet so that I can keep track of my progress and review from time to time. A simple Google search result led me to this website and I am thrilled to be here. On top of tracking my “popcorn” verses, I have just started memorizing the book of Philippians. This is my first attempt at memorizing a book of the bible, and my first real attempt at memorizing an extended passage. I have memorized a few chapters (Psalm 1, Psalm 23, 1 Corinthians 13), but this is foreign territory for me. I hope to be able to commit many more books to memory with the help of God’s guidance (and an occasional, daily boost this website). I am so excited to be here and look forward to seeing everyone’s progress in committing Scripture to memory.

If there is such a thing as “biblical jealousy”, then I am jealous of those of you who have been able to participate in the Bible Bee. Oh well, I have not found any evidence that such a trait exists (except for God's jealousy) and I can’t turn back time, so I guess it would be no different than challenging my accountability partner to memorize God’s Word with me. Anyways, in summary, I’m Chris, I’m glad to be here, and I am excited about God’s glory!

“So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”
1 Corinthians 10:31

Chris, just a short note to say "Welcome to memverse" It is a great encouragement and inspiration to me to hear from others who are excited about memorizing Scripture. Regarding the Bible Bee, possibly you can "participate" by running or helping others run a Bible Bee and getting 7-18 year olds around you to catch your passion for Scripture memory as you memorize the verses and share insights with them.

Laurel

Hi Chris! And welcome to memverse! :) I agree with the "jealousy" bit! I also started memorizing late in life and only began memorizing entire books three years ago. It has been such a joy to come to the end of a book and be able to go back over it and recall the entire thing!
May God bless you richly as you continue on your journey with Him and commit His words to your heart and mind.

Talia "StoryMaker"

I'm Talia, I'm 13 years old and I'm (big surprise!) homeschooled.

Aside from a few verses here and there, I didn't memorize very much at all until the 2009 Bible Bee came along. I wasn't the most dedicated Bible Bee-er in the world, but it was eye-opening to realize that I could memorize way more verses than I had once thought. When the Bible Bee came to its close, I took a break from memorizing until Mom showed me MemVerse. I remember the first passage I memorized on MemVerse - Psalm 23. Not long after, the verses for the 2010 Bible Bee were released, and then I really got into it again. This time, I had MemVerse, making it easier to do. I still go on MemVerse every day, and occasionally I will add more verses. I believe that some people are more motivated to memorize scripture than others - but either way, I think that everyone should really try to memorize at least some scripture. Plus, I think that many people don't realize their true potential, and, with the proper tools (such as Bible Bee!) they will figure out that they can memorize far more verses than they initially thought.

I would also like to add that, during the 2009 Bible Bee, one of the things that really pressed me to memorize more was a Bible Bee "Boot Camp" hosted by Phil Walker. I someimes found it exhausting, but it was most definitely worthwhile, and was one of the major things that let me realize that I could memorize more than I ever knew!

On Solid Ground

Hi everyone,

My name is Carissa. I am twelve years old, I will turn thirteen in July. This is my first year to do the Bible Bee. I started memorizing scripture when I was small. I didn't work that hard on it though. I started really working on it when I started the Bible Bee. It is such a blessing to have a lot of verses memorized. Memorizing is such a helpful thing. I'm also homeschooled. I really enjoying staying home with my family instead of every day going off to a public school. It is such a blessing to be homeschooled. Since I am homeschooled I am much closer to my family. I thank the LORD for letting me be a part of the best family ever!!! (I know you probably all disagree:D) I enjoyed getting to know some of you.

It's great to have you on memverse, Carissa! I too am homeschooled, though this is my senior year and so I don't have a lot of it left. Thankfully homeschooling has allowed me more time to devote to Scripture memorization since I'm able to finish one subject and immediately move on to the next. I hope you continue discovering the joys of the Lord and His Word as you memorize Scripture.

Hello Everyone!

I thought I would introduce myself since others have. I'm 15 and living at home with my family of 8. I have two wonderful parents and six amazing siblings (2 boys and 4 girls...yes, I know, we out number them a little :)). I have been homeschooled all my life and am going into 10th grade. I''m glad that I've been homeschooled for several reasons. First, I have had the opporturnity to know my family very well by spending time with them every day. Also, I have been able to learn more on interests that I enjoy. I enjoy music (piano and flute)..and I hope one day I can learn cello and harp!), poetry, blogging (rejoicing-evermore.blogspot.com) and writing. This is my first year to do the Bible Bee and it has been such a blessings! It has been wonderful to memorize God's Word and hide it in my heart. I hope to do it next year also, Lord willing.

I must say, that Memverse has been such a wonderful help to doing the Bible Bee! It is a great tool to keep things refreshed in my mind. Oh, and the quizzes are very helpful also :)

One of my favorite verses that I have memorized for the Bible Bee is 1 Samuel 12:24 "Only fear the Lord and serve him faithfully with all your heart; for consider what great things he has done for you."

My name is Sarah Frisk and I am 12 years old. I am Bethany Frisk's older sister. Funny that I had to use the last name for my own sister! :D I am homeschooled and in 7th grade this year. I participated in the Bible Bee this year and two years ago and went to Nationals both times.
And in case anyone is wondering, that picture looks nothing at all like me.

Secret agent of God (Paul Harrison)

Hi guys!
My name is Paul Harrison. I am a homeschooler and live in Texas. I will be 14 on January 9th and i run Harrison Laboratories located in Houston Texas. I found memverse to be a GREAT place for looking through the Bible and memorizing. In fact, i am writing a book and some of the verses used in there came from the memverse 'search Bible' area. This is a great site and I have the best parents in the world! :-) My dad was top gun Navy jet fighter pilot lieutenant commander Keith Harrison for 15 years, then was a Navy flight mechanic and test pilot. He now runs a corporate aviation business called Founders Aviation.

@God's Maiden of Virtue: You seem really cool and terrific! I can't help but wonder, based on your extreme coolness and terrificness, who your parents are? They must be amazingly cool and phenomenally terrific, too! Right? Correct? Wouldn't that be a proper line of reasoning? A proper path of deduction? Who are your super cool parents? Are they on MemVerse, too?!

And their names are Wretched Son #3 and Wretched Son #4 (Royal and Titus Alexander). I hope this answers your question, Dad. You might want to get to know them. *Chuckle*

Bethany Frisk - although there are a lot of Bethanys, at least we don't all have the same initials! I know 2 other Bethany M's. The three of us were all homeschooled and went to the same church for a while! It was very confusing. :D

Bethany Frisk and Bethany M- Do either one of you know Sarah Malley or Sarah Maxwell? Sarah Malley wrote the book Before you Meet Prince Charming. She also is the one who started the Bright Lights ministry.
Sarah Maxwell wrote the Moody Family series:
Summer with the Moodys, Autumn with the Moodys, Winter with the Moodys, Spring with the Moodys, Summer Days with the Moodys and Autumn Days with the Moodys. They are very good books. The children show a good example on how brothers and sisters should treat each other. I really like them.

@Rosie - I don't personally know either Sarah Malley or Sarah Maxwell, but I have gone through most of the Bright Lights course with my mom. I also have read Summer with the Moodys, Autumn with the Moodys, Winter with the Moodys, and Spring with the Moodys. I really like them, too!
@Bethany Frisk - Wow, that's a lot of Sarahs! :O :)

@GMOV: Hi, bestest daughter in the whole wide world! Congratulations on reaching 500 verses! I'm very proud of you!

So, think you'd ever consider joining the Romans Project Group for awhile, especially since the Bright Lights Group is only getting bigger and bigger and isn't going to end anytime soon?

The Romans Project only has 10 more months of life left, and it will then retire; while Brite Lites will still be there when 2012 ends.

Think it over. We sure would like to have you join us, since you're memorizing it already.

Wretched Man- You spelled my name right!
Thank you! I never thought I would memorize so much in just a few months.
I have considered joining the Romans Project Group. And I'm very sorry to say, that I can not except your offer. I already have chosen a group, and I intend to stay loyal to it. Thank you kindly for your offer, but I just can not do it. You can understand my place can't you? I might (remember I said might) join you for maybe a day. We'll see.

I don't know if Brite Lites will still be there though. Because, I don't know what Brite Lites is. But I do know what Bright Lights is, if that is what you are talking about.
