Evie, Child of Grace

Evie and servant of the king- I wish I had met you guys. I didn't realize either of you were there. :(

Yeah, I kinda had Dani point you out to me, and I kept meaning to meet you – hopefully next year!

I'd like to make sure that this study group doesn't conflict or compete with Denver's study group. Just to be clear to everyone (since I can be very unclear sometimes), I would like to not only study a passage, but also to create a study guide, pick memory verses (like Everett is doing), and maybe write a test.

Q1: so you don't want to join in with Denver's group?

Q2: Are you saying you want to make sure that this study group is not going on the same time his is?

So would you be writing the Study Guide or someone else (or would it be a group)? I'm still uncertain as to whether or not I want/have time to do it.

I don't know anything about Denver's group. As far as I can tell, he organized it with some of his friends at the Nationals. I have no problem being part of his study group, but I also want to write a study guide, etc.
I don't think it's possible for this study not to overlap his. As Sauroc said, this will take more than a few weeks. I just want to make sure everyone knows I not trying to create another study group to replace Denver's. I'm trying to get a group together to write a study guide.

The Study Guide would be written by everyone who wants to help write it. There's no deadline (although it would preferably be completed before next year's Bible Bee!) so there's no problem if some of you can't commit to anything yet.

Ah, okay.. So what book were you thinking of? why not write a SG for the last section of John? Don't you think it would be fitting to finish what we all started?

C6a152228207f095fcf5c002f1841372?s=128&d=mm

Joshua S

Yes, I think we should write it on John 13-21 (or possibly John 13-17 if we run out of time). If anyone's interested at this point, please email me at joshuabb@believershome.com and tell me whether you would like to start in January or December. That way, we can figure out when to start and put a mailing list together at the same time. No one has to commit to anything yet. The only requirement is that you be interested. You could also send me an email if you are not interested, but I have no idea why anyone would do that.

Okay, now I know more about Denver's study group. His study group should compliment this one. My goal is to get a team together to write a study book, pick memory verses, and write a test (I'm starting to sound like a broken record). I think Denver is also going to write a test, so if two tests are too much for the Bible Bee/Memverse community to support, I'll just drop my test and focus on writing a study book and finding memory verses.

I like all of this^^ let me get through the next two weeks to where I can actually think straight ;P and I'll give you my decision.

I also like that you want to somewhat go along with Dener's study… Cuz I think it would be great the more ppl we could get to study the same thing.

Based on recommendations on this form and in emails, in order to coordinate this study with other studies which will be taking place, and in light of the busy holiday season (which now lasts all of December), it looks like we'll be starting in January!

I think I'm going to try to do Denver's study. I'm also really interested in what you're planning on doing, Joshua. I have no idea if I'll actually have time to do any of this, but I'd love to try. :P

Yay! Were you wanting to do it with the group that's doing it (like stay connected with how everyone is doing it), or were you thinking of doing it by yourself?

It was so wonderful to see/meet you all at Nationals this year!!! I'm already missing the amazing fellowship. :( I'd love to keep studying with you all, though I'm not quite sure how much time I'll be able to devote with school and all. Whatever happens, I pray that each one of you will press on in your study and memorization of God's Word, seeking Him increasingly more every day. Also, thanks Evie for what you shared. I was thinking the same thing about the competitiveness. :)

Again, so great to fellowship with you all, and see you next year, Lord willing!

I just wanted to let y'all know that I don't think I'll be able to do the study of John 13-21. With extra schoolwork, possibly learning to drive, memorizing John 13-21 (and maybe Galatians), probably doing the Ruth Sword Study, and whatever else God has planned for me in 2016, I most likely wouldn't have time to. I really wanted to, but if I commit to too much, I'll get less than I would've if I had made reasonable goals and plans. Hope y'all enjoy it! It sounds like it will be a lot of fun! :)

^Oh, and BTW, I don't think that any of my siblings are doing it (which is another reason not to do it)^

I'd definitely like to take part in the group thing. If by "with the group" you mean being on a Google Doc or something, I may not be able to do that, as I don't have access to just anything on the Internet. Also, we'll see how much time I can commit. ;)

I guess what I mean by "with the group" is; if you will take part in like, talkin about it on here, helping eachother - things like that.. If Tht makes any sense. ;p

Below are my plans for the study. If anyone has any suggestions (and enough time to read through all of this), I would love to hear them.

The Study Book
I personally liked how the Sword Study started out with an overview and then got into more detail. I think its much easier to appreciate the details after seeing the big picture. I think we should start out with an overview of John 13-21, and then go chapter by chapter starting with an overview and then getting into details. The Sword Study's "Aerial View," "Street View," and "Under the Rug" terminology is probably copyrighted, so if anyone can think of some other clever labels for each section, please let me know. Otherwise, I will end up thinking of something very boring to call them.

Overview - Look at the passage as a whole.
Chapter - Look at each chapter as a whole.
Details - Look at specific key words/concepts.

Within each section, we could have sub-sections. For example…

Key Concepts - What are the main concepts taught in this section?
Outlines and Structure
Purpose ————
Christ - What does this section reveal about Christ/God?
Gospel - How does this section relate to the gospel?
Application - How can this passages be applied to a Christian's life?
————————–
Biblical Context - What other parts of the Bible relate to this section? (cross-references)
Historical Context (if applicable)
Greek/Hebrew Words

I'd like to appeal to as broad an audience as possible. Perhaps we could start each section simply and get deeper toward the end. We could borrow the Study Guide's method of dividing into "Wading In" and "Diving In" sections

The Memory Verse
As for the memory verses, the biggest thing we have to decide is how many we should have. I think we should have 100 memory verse, 100 bonus memory verses, and 100 super-bonus memory verses for a total of 300. Nevertheless, I am very open to suggestions about this.

The Test
The test can be composed throughout the whole study time. In terms of content, I could definitely use some input, but here's what I am thinking…
Greek/Hebrew - 5%
Biblical Context - 20%
Memory Verses - 25%
Study Passage Content - 25%
Comprehension - 25%

Here's a more detailed explanation of how our study will work come January. To make this easier, I'll break it down into three steps. Once again, if you want to help, please email me at joshuabb@believershome.com.

STEP 1: Study the given passage (John 13-21).

STEP 2: Send in what you learned! Here's what I'm looking for…

Outlines:
Please share your outlines, and anything unique about the outline!

Cross-references:
Since we will be doing an overview of John 13-21 the first week, please share general cross-references that apply to John 13-21 as a whole (we will get into more detail later). Please share your thoughts on your cross-references.

Key Concepts:
I would like to identify the main themes of John 13-21. Please share your thoughts.

Christ and the Gospel:
What are the various attributes of Christ and of the gospel revealed in John 13-21? We just need a general list for the first week. We can get into more detail later.

Application:
How will we be able to apply John 13-21? We only need a general list for the first week. We will get into more detail later.

Miscellaneous:
Any other thoughts you may have on John 13-21!

Test Questions

Memory Verses

Greek Words:
I don't think Greek words will be necessary for the first week. That is, of course, open to discussion.

You can choose what you want to submit. You don't have to send in something from every topic!

STEP 3: I will gather all the information you send me and organize it. If anyone has extra time and would like to help with editing one of the above topics for a certain week, please let me know. Don't feel obligated to help with editing. Not everyone has to do it. The editors will have the following responsibilities:

  1. Filling in the blanks in their topic. For example, if no one submitted an outline, then whoever is in charge of editing the "Outlines" section will be responsible for supplying an outline.
  2. Presenting their topic. I will send all the information from a given topic to the editor. The editor will be responsible for organizing the information and presenting it in a form that will work in the study book (an article for example).

I'm actually part of Denver's group now, and I am planning to study John 13-21 with his group. My group is something extra. We are planning to write a study book for John 13-21. So, yes, they are along side of each other, although we haven't "officially" coordinated our groups.

Steve W.

Has it been decided on if we want to make a study of 13-21 or 13-17? Also, not sure if I heard if we're gonna devide into separate "groups" for each category in the SG..

C6a152228207f095fcf5c002f1841372?s=128&d=mm

Joshua S

If we made a group for each topic, we would end up with about two people per group (assuming no one is to busy to help that week). In order to get more variety, I think we'll try to have everyone contribute to as many topics as they can (without assigning people to specific groups). Afterwards, anyone who has extra time can become an "editor" and devote themselves to one of the topics. It remains to be seen whether this will actually work, so we still may have to break everyone up into groups. I'm just hoping we can get more insight if we have everyone contributing to multiple topics instead of just one or two people contributing to each topic. Again, nothing is final, and I'm open to discussion about this.
We'll try to do John 13-21, and if we run out of time, we can always stop at chapter 17.

Joshua S

If you wanted to, you could study each chapter before the book is out, and then see what we wrote in the study book for that chapter once it's released.
Writing the study book could take anywhere from 11 weeks to 20 week. I don't have much of an idea since I've never done anything like this before.

Joshua S

I'm not entirely sure, since I've never done anything like this before. Hopefully, we'll end around March 20.
