I've heard a LOT of different ways to memorize, but how do YOU memorize best? (Besides MemVerse! :D) I'm an auditory learner - I memorize best by hearing. At our church, our pastor reads the 10 Commandments nearly every week. Recently, I realized that I had them memorized! I hadn't even been trying. I learn song lyrics really quick, too, and I often find myself memorizing the actor's lines from movies and audio dramas. I've also memorized things by writing it down a lot… what ways do you use?

For me, songs are a nice way to learn verses extremely quickly and permanently. Despite these advantages, I don't use songs all the time because the song becomes permanently fixed to the verse in my mind, which might make it a bit harder to meditate.

ScriptureTyper.com is really helpful for memorizing. Also, I agree that listening can help a lot. I recorded myself saying the first 4 Bible Bee passages and uploaded it on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50ybYRjBdcY&feature=plcp

If you watch the above, excuse my lame voice! xp

I have a few tips but I'll share them later because I have to go get ready to see the passing of Venus over the sun (we're going with friends) :D I'm excited!

Talia - I looked at your main YouTube page and I have a question about your video … I am wondering … are you wearing a head covering? do you wear it all the time, or just for church etc? I'm just curious to know, because I wear one as well.

Hah, yes, I am, though if you watch far enough, you can see it slip off :P

I usually only wear it at church or while praying alone to God. Sometimes I wear it more often than that, though.

We could start a new Theology Discussions topic for head coverings, maybe…

Songs are generally what I use, too. Also, videos help a lot. When my older sister was seven or eight years old, she had the entire book of Matthew memorized (in NIV) from watching "Matthew" (put out by the International Bible Society and Pathway Media) over and over and over.

I agree that songs are a great way to memorize! (I memorized a passage several years ago in my third language, and I still remember it because I sang it.)

As far as meditation, I have found it helpful to meditate on the verse for a while, then think of tunes (generally hymn tunes) that will not contradict the mood of the verse. That way I can still think about what the words mean, and it also has the benefit getting them "stuck in my mind" so that I am singing them all week! Some examples: I have used the tune for "O the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus" for some verses with a warning, while songs such as "I Sing the Mighty Power of God" seem to match verses that should sound more majestic. (But other verses are rather difficult to do this way–like when I got to the end of Colossians 2 and tried to memorize verse 23 to a tune that made sense with it!)

Do you use tunes that you already know, or do you make them up to fit the verse?

The Matt kinda guy

I am doing NBB so I say my passages to a listener every week but also I try to say them every day to my mom.

As for memorizing them I copy the passage off BibleGateway.com and paste it on a Stickie, then I open a new stickie and make it transparent and type over the other one. Hope that makes sense.

Songs and movies help me a lot, too, but it's hard to find resources for them. Any ideas?
If I'm doing a large portion of scripture, I've found that it helps to first intensively study the text. Split the book up into bite-sized pieces and then study each for a certain amount of time. Read it often. Then I can actually understand what I'm memorizing! After studying it, then I take it chapter-by-chapter to "seriously" memorize it. I paste the chapter into a word document, supersize the print so I can only see a few words at a time, (usually size 100 works well,) and then begin to recite the chapter. The words I can see are prompts, and when I recite past what's visible, I replace the words already I know with two dots. So, the next time I review the chapter, I have to say those parts from memory. And I just keep doing that until the chapter is memorized. It's basically a larger-scale version of writing a verse on a whiteboard and erasing words until it's memorized. When I think the chapter is memorized, put it into Memverse for retention.
I can't wait to hear more ways to memorize!!! Thank you all for sharing!

I found that recording yourself and listening to the recording over and over again really helps. Then you can remember a passage by remembering how you said it when you recorded it.

A great way to memorize a verse really quickly is to not realize you haven't memorized your Bright Lights verse for the week until you're in the car on your way there, only 5 minutes away.
(feverishly trying to memorize out of your Bible) "Don't let anyone look down upon you because you are young…but…um…but set an example for the other…um,.."
(5 minutes later, as you pull into the driveway)
"AHA!!! I memorized it!!!!!!"

Read any passages that you memorized that day or are going to memorize the next day about 5 times each right before you go to bed. When you wake up in the morning you'll have them all pretty much memorized!

If you memborize in NIV check out Greg Stultz scripture memory music on youtube. He has all of Ephesians and a large chunck of Romans on there, as well as lots of other verses. Ephesians is free to download. I memorized it using the music several years ago and can still recall it. Also I've found that when I wake up in the middle of the night I can recite my verses a lot easier than during the day. Then the next day I know them better.
