#1 Read the verse you want to memorize right before you go to bed. VERY helpful.
#2 Memorize the verse backwords
#3 Listen to the verse lots of times

Recording yourself saying the passage and listening to it over and over is very helpful, I have found. (I guess that's almost pretty much what you just said, isn't it? :D)

Is that how you have so many memorized already?

I read the verses that I plan on memorizing that week, 3 times a day….that way, I'm really familiar when it comes time to memorize.

When do you plan on finishing your verses?

The schedule that my mom planned is an average of about 60 a week. But from last Wednesday to last Saturday I had to memorize 45. If I follow the schedule I should finish in 6 weeks or so

Reading the verse before you go to bed is definitely very helpful. If you just meditate on it, you will be "thinking" about it in your sleep, and it cements it in your mind.

I am a visual person, so I like to attach pictures to the verses (in my mind). For example: in 1 Corinthians 9:25 I think of an athlete refusing another piece of cheesecake (that being one of my favorite desserts). It helps me a lot.

I am having a battle with the book of Galatians. I am almost kinda through with chapter 5 but its taking me so long to memorize it.
( 2 months )
It may be me and my old brain, but I was wondering if anyone else has ever had the same trouble with the book. And if so, can you please give the old geezer a tip?

Ideas for memorizing long passages of scripture (for busy people):

  1. Pray
  2. Try writing out the first letter of every word on a small piece of paper to carry around with you everywhere.
  3. If you are a dishwasher I suggest you make a stand so you can set your cards up on a counter and keep memorizing even well your hands are wet or dirty.
Don’t memorize things in your head because if you do you may never be able to quote it anywhere but in your head. (Has anyone else found this to be true?)

Yes, I certainly have. :)
I have done the same thing when I washed dishes, or later when I was milking the cows. I memorized quite a few New Testament books just by reading them over and over when I was outside milking - time that otherwise would have been wasted (although it took longer to milk when I wasn't focused on it as much). Also, I tend to get 'brain overload' by trying to memorize too much all at once (which was pretty much every day during BB), but when I'm engaged in a simple physical activity (like washing dishes) at the same time I can study for much longer periods of time without feeling like my brain is about to permanently shut down. :)

Yes! Say it out loud. Even whispering is better than just quoting it in your head.

I can always remember which of my BB verse I memorized where by the color of their card. :) The ones I memorized well cleaning stalls are blackish, the ones I memorized well baling hay are brown, smoke smell must mean I was at the bonfire with them, the ones with the crinkles and the smeared ink are from watering the garden, and the ones I memorized well I was riding a horse…well, they don’t exist anymore because the friction from the saddle made them fall apart in my pocket! Memorizing verses make memories sweeter. ;) Ah, life on the farm is the best!
I don’t remember having memory shut down. My biggest problem was that I memorized them at a fast speed, so when I quoted them they were fast too. Way too fast!

@Sarah: I actually go around muttering my verses. I’m sure some people have thought I was a lunatic… lol!:)

Another tip would be to try memorizing right before you go to bed. I have found that even if you don't completely memorize that night it is ten times easier to memorize when you wake up the next day!
