I wasn't really sure where to put this!
I need help on finding new ways to memorize.
I am a memorizer (I don't know the right term for this so if you do PLEASE feel free to tell me!) who says things over and over and then i get it.
The only problem with that is, after I have done 1-2 cards that week I can't seem to learn it as well.
I need ideas on how to memorize them without using a computer. I use memverse after I have already memorized them! It helps me review them.
Thanks!
Your Sis in Christ,
Kylie

  • Songs. Just make up any old song. Or chants work too. The only disadvantage is that the song and the verse are permanently fused in your head, so it might be harder to recite or even possibly meditate. But it tends to be very effective and fast, so I suggest you give it a try for at least some verses.

  • Write the passage down on paper multiple times. I don't do this myself, but others do and say it's a great technique.

  • A good technique for longer passages: Read the first verse (or just a chunk) of a passage, then start over and read up to the next verse (or chunk), then read up to the verse after that…etc.

  • Put the cards in your pocket, and whenever you have a spare moment, read them. OR…combine this technique with the second one I mentioned by writing it down yourself on a card and putting it in your pocket.

  • Record yourself saying the verses and play it back to yourself over and over again.

  • Be creative…write the verse down fancifully with pictures in the margins. Make up goofy tricks (the stranger the better). Come up with whatever helps; try until you find something that works for you!

  • Work with a partner. It's quite valuable to have a parent, sibling or friend help you…and it helps them too! Give it a try!

  • Meditate on the passage. Maybe even look it up in the Bible to see the context. It might not seem like a great technique for word-for-word memorization, but it will help you know the passage better.

If you have a particular verse or verses in mind, you could give the references and people might have extra ways of learning those particular verses - more unique points - ways they've put them into chants, or pictures they think of, or how they relate them to previous verses etc.

Sorry for the delayed reply.

I haven't memorised that one, but looking at it, I might try creating some actions for most of the phrases. I'd do one action each for deny, taking up cross, save life, lose life, world, self, me ashamed, God ashamed. If you say the verse and do the actions several times, then practise doing the actions in order, it might help to cement the verses together.

How are you doing with Talia's tips?
