Grandma was trying to argue with Bill Nye the whole time he was talking (or should I say, she was trying really hard not to!). LOL

I have been a part of some debates in my life where we did try to yell over each other… I was never good at that kind of stuff. :P
What was your favorite part of the debate last night? I didn't have one… :)

2 Corinthians 5:17

My favorite part was probably right at the end, when they gave the first and foremost reason for their beliefs. Mr Ham: The Bible, and his Christian faith (he kind of shared the gospel there too!). Mr. Nye: the scientific proofs and such.
Mr Ham had God on his side!!

I really didn't like how Nye kept saying "Ken Ham's model". :P
And I was highly amused by how he said Noah couldn't have possibly built the ark. I mean, how much could you have learned if you were 500 years old…? ^And lost of other reasons that I won't go into at the moment :P^

We watched it, but everyone else in the whole world was also watching, so it was all jerky. :P

They both did a real good job. When I learned they were gonna take turns, I was like, "Aw man, now they can't interrupt each other!"
Dad, Nathan, Caleb, Joseph and I watched it. Elisabeth wasn't interested, and Mom had to be with Moriah.

Oh, I know! It was so annoying! Like he was trying to make Ken Ham feel all alone in the world. Wouldn't it be more accurate to say, "God's model" ? …it's not like Ken Ham just made it up.

Can you tell me what he was talking about by the "Model"? I thought I understood it, but now I'm not sure…

Well, I didn't expect the debate to cover much new ground, so I wasn't disappointed. It really came down to different assumptions, and different world views. It seemed like Mr. Nye made several appeals to emotion and fear, which annoyed me. I am biased, though. I ended up being frustrated by the lack of understanding Mr. Ham's position on Mr. Nye's part, even though I was expecting it beforehand, and really tried not to let it bother me. As christians, of course we should expect that the world won't understand our way of approaching the world. To them, it truly isn't "reasonable" as much as Mr. Nye's constant use of that phrase annoyed me.

I was intrigued however, by Mr. Nye's definition of "science" that isn't observational science or historical science. That was the one point in the debate that helped me understand his position.

I was only able to watch part of it, but I watched enough to change my opinion about Bill Nye. I used to see him as the funny "Science guy", not anymore.

I watched it and was very annoyed that Bill Nye ignored almost every single question Ken Ham asked. Ken Ham would would ask a few important questions saying "now this is the question I have for Bill", while Bill just knocked down so many straw men Mr. Ham didn't have time to refute them all. :

It seemed to me that Bill Nye was trying to appeal more to emotion...

I agree.
It seemed as if Bill Nye's main point was that the economy would die if kids were not taught Evolution, but he had nothing to back it up with. /:-|

Right!?? How does kids being taught Evolution have anything to do with the economy??? And Ken Ham had already brought up a bunch of Christians that were scientist who had made great discoveries.

I felt like they were really speaking two different languages. Nye's language didn't make sense to us; it was just gibberish. But I think the atheists probably felt the same way about Ham. The difference is, Ken Ham should have (and I think did) expected that reaction. We're Christians. We shouldn't be surprised when we're attacked for our faith. We are emphatically against what the public schools are teaching the kids. From Bill Nye's perspective, it would ruin the country if our ideas prevailed. Our world is becoming more of a spiritual battlefield every day. We need to be ready.

Did anyone else get the idea that Nye was trying to pain Ken Ham as a cultist…? How he kept saying "You just want these people to trust your interpretation of this Book that has been translated into English" and "You just want them to take your word for it, and that's very unsettling to me"?

We watched the debate in streaming while on vacation. It was pretty fun! It was interesting how easily we could point out some of Mr. Nye's mistakes in his reasoning… "Only eight people built the ark", yeah, right, like they were prohibited from hiring… Plus they had 120 years… "Built by unskilled family" - what??!! They were more skilled then than they are now!

I agree with you. Bill Nye made several large errors in his argumentation. :) At the same time, though, it is important to note the fallacies within the debate were not one sided. Mr. Ham also committed several fallacies in his arguments (I am not at all saying that his position is right, only that sometimes the way he presented them was, as with Mr. Nye, logically invalid).

Just for clarification, do you mean that Noah had experience in massive ark building? Of course, they assuredly had knowledge of metal working, but I do not think that anyone had ever built that large of a craft before, and that is one of the reasons why people called Noah's work foolishness. At least, that has been my perception. I entirely get your point about Ken Ham's assumption regardless. :)
