It would be very similar to watching a movie in a different language - you probably would get some generalities, but wouldn't really know what is going on. Most (or maybe all) of the full operas we do have been translated to English so that everyone can understand what's going on, but if we're doing short scenes we might do it in the original language with the translations printed in the program. The original language usually sounds better, but it really wouldn't hold anyone's attention if they had no idea what was happening. :)
All vocal music majors do have to take diction classes - which basically teach you to how to sing/speak different languages (Italian, English, French and German) correctly - but we're not required to actually learn any of those languages. In other words, I could read something and have a decently correct accent/pronunciation, but would have no idea what I am saying. :) Whenever we are singing something in a different language we usually look up translations and make sure we know what most of the words mean so that we can sing it with good (and correct :)) expression, so after a couple years most people know a decent amount of the common words, but usually don't know much about putting them into sentences.

We were _going_ to have a contradance... Note the 'going'. :P
Sarah, we could have a contra dance on June 26! :)
God's Maiden of Virtue
A contra dance?
Seth W.
Not sure how to interpret that…
God's Maiden of Virtue
Sorry; what is a contra dance?
Seth W.
Have you heard of English Country Dancing? Pretty much like that. I know they have done something similar at Nationals the last 2 years - but your family may not have gone. It's the kind of dancing you would see in Pride and Prejudice or something like that - 18-19th century dancing, geared more toward the wealthy who would put on balls and such. A lot of homeschoolers like it because you do have to have a partner (preferably of the opposite gender), but at max you're only touching each other's hands (no ballroom positions or anything like that).

Yup, and most likely your partner (well, at least your first one) will be your sibling. xD

Hey! NC isn't that far from Ohio… you should come too! xD

Hey! WV isn't that far from Ohio... I should come too! xD

Haha! Yeah, that'd be fun, but we've got lots of other stuff going on this summer, sooo… ;)

Unless you don't have any sisters, and you have no idea what Contra Dancing is, and you're new to the area and realize that the homeschool 'game night' is quickly turning into a Contra Dance…but fortunately an understanding girl who knows how to dance and is good with people comes to the rescue, and by the end of the night you realize that this "Contra Dancing" is kind of fun. :)

Hannah, dear, I’m very, very sorry you won’t be able to come… but would you really want other people not to have fun just because you can’t be there? As it is I don’t know that we will be dancing much anyway… :(
@Seth- Some of our friends have opted out of the dance idea, jsyk.
Sarah B.
About opera music and singing- Thank you! That completely answered my question. I’m sure the original language sounds much better then a translation… I would very much like to see one sometime. :)
I find it very interesting that you can read like that, not knowing what it means and still read it correctly. You make me wish I were a music major… ;)

No problem - I sort of expected that some people wouldn't be be up for it. It was just an idea.

Okay. We'll probably just watch. We're not into that kind of dancing in our family - at all. xP

We're not into any kind of dancing in our family. :P

Ahem I still love ballet.

*Ahem* I still love ballet.
I don't. :P Fine, I'm not into any kind of dancing. :P

Well, I guess your statement still works - I myself just like one kind of dancing exclusively.

Yes. I would be -crying- bawling all day long, knowing that I was missing out on all the fun.
Sarah B.
I understand that you would not want to miss out… I would feel badly to miss something like that too (and have in the past). But don't you think that's a bit selfish, dear? Have you ever been to a dance before? I haven't.
Mommy's Helper
drops head I guess it is selfish, dear.
I have been to two dances. Square dances, but one was actually mostly folk dancing.

Choir starts in six days!
We found a Sacred Harp sing in Fairbanks!
Evie, Child of Grace
No way! How neat. You'll have to tell me how it is!
Christine Daaé (Dani the Older)
I will.

Anyone singing in the Massiah this year???
Christine Daaé (Dani the Older)
Yup! We do every year- we went to the Kennedy Center in D.C. last year. :)
2 Corinthians 5:17
Anyone singing in the Massiah this year???
*Messiah ;-)
I've thought about it :)
Christine Daaé (Dani the Older)
I'm hoping to solo next year, but I have a bunch of training to do before then…. XD
Nathan Wright: Impersonator Hunter
I REALLY like acting!!!
Christine Daaé (Dani the Older)
I hit a D5 today, singing! Granted, I still can't open my throat all the way for it yet, so it doesn't sound great, but I can work up to it!
God's Maiden of Virtue
Nice! I did that recently too, while playing around on the piano. :) ^Of course, I don't sing well in general, so whatever. :P^

I was looking at the pictures of our Jonah play from Locals… and when I got to the scene of Nineveh, I almost died laughing! Oy, we have some dramatic actors in our Bee! XD
Shaggydog (Bloodhound)
Cool! In my drama class, we are doing this crazy scene which makes absolutely no sense! (My teacher is insane) :)
Emma
That's so awesome that you could do a play at your Locals!
Christine Daaé (Dani the Older)
I did it! Last night, or rather, this morning, I started singing and got Courtney to sing with me. Brianna and Rachel joined in a moment later, and then I dragged Emily in…. And then everyone else started singing, too! We sang old choir songs.
If anyone has pictures or video from either the square dance or singing, could you try to get them to me? Thanks.
Christine Daaé (Dani the Older)
Well, I wasn't sure where else to put this, so:
I got a 1440 degree spin on ice today! It's the best I've ever done, and especially good since I haven't skated for about ten months!
Shaggydog (Bloodhound)
super cool!
