Hope Chests

Has anyone heard about hope chests? I have been interested in that for a long time but can't seem to find anyone else who's heard about it.

I have heard of Hope Chests, but my mom said to wait until I'm a little older to have one. I am almost 12, I might get one for my Birthday!! :)

For a hope chest, I think you get a special box and put certain things that are meaningful to you, such as letters, old clothes, little gifts from friends or siblings, etc.

I received a hope chest for my 13th birthday that just occurred. It is from my great-grandmother, and it is solid cedar. Thank you God! I love it already!

You don't need any special box to put things in, before I got my hope chest I was just keeping my special things in an old cardboard diaper box! :-) You can put heirlooms in it (things that have been used by someone close to you), special letters, things that will be useful in your future home, and just about anything that is close to your heart! For a much more detailed list, read "The Hope Chest: A Legacy of Love" by Rebekah Wilson. I have read it 8 times, though it is a thick book! :-)

Yes, I have heard about hope chests! I own one! In it I put things that are special to me, things that I make (Baby blankets, tableclothes, etc.), and things that will be useful to you when you get married and have a house of your own. A bunch of my friends also have hope chests, so your not the only own who knows about them!

I was keeping things in a cardboard box in my closet for a while, but God provied a beautiful chest from an aunt. I think I will look into your book! Thanks for the reccomendation! (It might be a while before I can read it though, my reading list is like 25 books long!!!)

You might think about putting it higher on your reading list… Trust me: it's worth it! :-)

And, of course, there is nothing wrong with a cardboard box. In fact, there is everything right with a cardboard box! It shows that you are willing to wait for God's timing and not sit around wasting your time pining away for the time God says is right for you to get one (if He ever does say so), but be useful in the meantime. Use what you have!

You're very true! Nothing wrong with a cardboard box, plus they store better! Hope chests, like mine, can be large and bulky, very inconvenient if you have a small room. It’s better than nothing!

Isaac, hope chests are purely a girl thing. (: They're chests that young ladies use to put their keep-sakes in and things they have made over the years that they will use when they begin a home of their own. Hope this helps!

I TOTALLY know where you're coming from. I share a room (one that wouldn't be roomy even if one slept in there), with my 4 sisters, 3 of which are under 4 years old. There is absolutely NO room for anything else in it, but, my superhero dad who can do almost anything in the world, (:-P), squeezed it in between my younger sister's dresser and mine. Now, there REALLY isn't room for anything else. I love my hope chest just as much or more for that though. :-)

@Isaac - Hope Chests can be for boys, although it would be more appropriate to name it a "Treasure Chest", in their case. You just put different things in there, it being of an entirely different nature than a girls. See "The Hope Chest: A Legacy of Love", by Rebekah Wilson, chapter 9.

Yeah, I actually have a hope chest (treasure chest, sorry) that my dad made for me about two years ago. :D

I never heard of a hope chest (treasure chest) for boys. But when you think about it, why not? Very good idea!

My three older sisters have literal hope chests-I have one in name only. I have been looking for a nice wooden chest to put my things in, but for now all my things are under my bed in plastic and cardboard boxes.

I had both plastic and a cardboard boxes before just recently when I got a real cedar chest. Keep it up! It'll be worth it. :-)

Well, mine is some paper bags in a plastic box out in the hangar. Right now all it has is some old baby clothes and blankets, but when we get home, I hope to add a lot to it. I have some crocks at my grandparents house… :P

This is……….cute, but, guys don't need "hope chests". We just need books, movies, and video games to pass on to our kids.

No disrespect intended, but I expect my husband to have more to pass on to our kids then movies books and video games. I expect him to pass on a godly legacy, and good character, work, and honesty, and other important things. I expect my husband to teach the kids about life, not sit in a chair, and show them how to live in a video game world. (I'm not saying those aren't ok on occasions.) I expect him to have experiences of witnessing, and helping others to pass on to the kids.

Hm………..I'm not sure my legacy, character, work, and honesty will fit in my box………do you have any ideas on what I can put them in?

EXACTLY. That's what I probably would've said to him… just not as well as you did. ;D

BTW, since we're talking about collecting stuff, I guess I should mention that I have a couple of big plastic bags in my closet where I store a ton of useless–but sentimentally valuable–junk. ;) In no time, I'll have a bunch more of those bags, and I won't have anywhere to put them… :P

LOL! I have a plastic tub in my closet full of, as you put it, useless–but sentimentally valuable–junk. For example, cards from my baby shower and "artwork" I made when I was 3 or 4.

I've never been very artistic, so I don't have a lot of artwork lying around. Just a bunch of stuff I've gathered from places and events. It'd really be interesting to go back through all of that stuff…
