I thought that same thing when I first heard about the drastic drop in verses this year, but some conversations on the forums (specifically on the "Less Verses for 2012" one) caused me to change a little. Although some think it would be nice to be more challenged, for most it seems to be an impossibility to memorize so many verses as there were last year in just one summer. Of course, it is not, but it is easy to see why someone would think that. But there are actually some advantages even to us who wish for more verses. The main one is that there is a much greater opportunity to meditate on each passage as you memorize it, since you do not feel rushed to memorize as much as you can each day. I have found that to be refreshing and encouraging. But if this does not convince you, you can just start your own memorization projects (like 2 Timothy and its cross-references), so you can go at your own faster pace. :)

Plus I know pretty much for a fact that many of the contestants from our church who joined this year would not have done so were the verse count much higher.

If you qualify for Nationals, you will in fact have many more verses - I think it was 300, 400, or 600 depending on your age group. I think it is a good idea to reserve this hard challenge for national qualifiers, while still giving local participants a smaller challenge that does not seem impossible.
