It seems to me that those weren't really ever in the official SW canon to begin with... there was so much opportunity for contradiction with so many authors writing their own fiction to supplement the movies...

I'm thinking about the same, there were some contradictions between novels, and even the movies and novels. I mean, there was a lot of really good books, especially the ones with Luke and the Original Trilogy characters, and their kids, but this will disambiguate between everything canon and non-canon.

However, this new change is like me taking time to tell you a true story, and having it take 10 hours of your time, and then telling you that it didn't happen. You'd feel like I cheated you, and that your time was wasted. I think that's what a lot of fans who don't like Disney taking over SW are feeling: they're feeling like they were cheated out a great story that now "never happened".
