Open Cube Modular Origami

^^This is what one cube looks like. If you make more and then interlock them you can make a really cool looking wreath.

Instructions…

  1. Take a square piece of paper…whatever size you want. And fold in half.

  2. Unfold the paper. Take the bottom part and fold it up in half to the crease in the middle of the paper. Do the same for the top half. So that they meet in the middle.

  3. Take the paper so that the folded part is face down. Take the right hand bottom corner and fold it up to reach to top…in a triangular way. Then unfold it and put the folded part face up. Like this…

  1. Take it and fold it up while opening it. Like this… And then smash down. Creating this…

  1. Now take the right hand top corner and fold it down to the bottom like you did above. And then unfold that part.

  2. Take the little flap of paper in the right hand corner and fold up to form a triangle. Like this…

  1. Now fold it down again and as you do so take the little triangle you just created and stick it in the pocket. (Hopefully that makes sense as I don't have a picture to illustrate it…)

You should now have something like this…

  1. Now take that and fold it in half the long way…so that the bottom of it meets the top and points are on the sides.

  2. Lastly, take each point and fold it in so that the piece of paper is now rectangular. Fold the triangle in until it meets the rest of the paper. Like this…

Once you make 12 of these you are ready to connect them to make the cube. :)

What's origami?

YES! I LOVE ORIGAMI! you ask "what is origami" The word at it's root essentially means, folding paper. Robert Lang, a leading practitioner of the art, defines it as "A form of sculpture in which the primary means of creating the figure is folding. I have been doing origami for quite a few years now and last year I went to the OUSA convention. Here are some pictures of things I have designed recently !http://i57.tinypic.com/11caxbb.jpg! !http://i57.tinypic.com/2w4k64k.jpg! It is getting close to thanksgiving now, so I am starting to work on a few thanks giving models. I have not done a whole lot of modulars, but lately I have been doing more.

I dabbled in origami once. I remember making a bird, I think. And some cubes you could fill with water and throw at people. That was fun.

OMG I made those! I did not fill them with water though..they last longer if you fill them with rocks and repeatedly throw them at anyone. :)

did my picture look like him or...

Yes… x) And he said he wasn't on much, and you are pretty much the same–so I thought it was a logical deduction. Apparently not logical enough. :P

I enjoy doing origami! I have a whole bag stuffed into my drawer in my room… my mom told me I'm not supposed to do any more origami without asking her XP

awww. I think origami is one of the greatest art forms possible. anyone can do it. from simple to complex. you can make something nice your first try. There is something for everyone, whether you like sculptural, modulars, tesselations, complex, simple, wet folding, dry tension folding, flat, 3D, etc…. There are infinite possibilities. In addition, origami is gaining huge momentum with mathematicians and Scientists. Origami is being used is space, medicine, airbag manufacturing, and more. And mathematicians have studied origami. Finding proofs for all sorts of things, from proving that origami is hard, to proving that any shape can be folded, to writing computer programs to do origami, to proving that a square of paper could theoretically be folded so the finished shape would have as large a perimiter as you want. anyway,,, I guess I got a little carried away

Please do tell how to connect them! I have made them all, but I can't figure out how to put them together! :P I've tried every which way, even trying to follow the picture, but it won't work!! xP

I haven't made much actually…cranes, boxes, frogs, etc… :)

Nicolas: Oh, yeah, so…NO! NOTHING! NEVERMIND! I shall do so shortly. :)

JR: Um…no.

And here's how to connect them. :)

Begin assembling the units but connecting three of them together. Insert one piece into the other as shown in the first picture. Once inserted, the crease on the tip of the inserted one should line up with the main crease of the one it was inserted into.

Attach a third unit to lock these in place. Again, you'll know it's in the right way when the creases match up.

EDIT: And in case you haven't figured it out these pictures are someone else's. ;) Not mine. :P

I really enjoy doing origami! I can only do a couple things from memory (boat, samurai helmet), but I am able to follow directions. I don't have the specially made paper, though. :-/ Once I made a bunch of little tiny boats. The smallest was a teeny bit bigger than FDR's ear on a dime!

93fcb35bede1ac128cb83b71e8060885?s=128&d=mm

SavedByGrace

Okay, so… I have four sets of three units now. What now…? x) ^(Sorry if I'm missing something majorly obvious. I've never done this before. :P)^

EDIT– is getting extremely frustrated with himself as, again, he tries and fails to connect the pieces… :P

ANOTHER EDIT–Nevermind! I figured it out! It just doesn't look nearly as nice as yours… :P

Fun my brothers and I made a bunch of paper boats getting progressively smaller. I think yours was smaller than mine :) You don't need specially made paper unless normall paper is to thick, not big enough, or you want a different color.

Sarah B.

I'd like to try origami. I'm interested in making something nice that doesn't take much time. Any suggestions?
