Because it would take up too much file space on memverse I'm guessing. And because Gravatar offers more options.

Well you can crop an image on Gravatar, select emails for which to use the avatar. If Memverse built that it would take up a lot of web space and kinda recreate what Gravatar already has.

That could be contested.
