Do a study on it. Handshakes are an extremely mild form of "violence", something that guys do with other guys to express their friendship. Handshakes also are a cold way of greeting someone, like you're putting your hands between you and the other person to keep the other person away. Hugs are something you do with people you are closer to, or for special times like saying hi or bye, or when someone is feeling down. Psychology, my friend. xP

They are in today's culture. Just like in Paul's culture the customary greeting was a kiss. (Yuck..)
Think of it, what are you doing when you shake someone's hand? You're shaking their hand! Because it's a standard way of greeting strangers in today's culture, we don't think anything of it, just like back in Paul's day they thought nothing of kissing. (Yuck again.)
