So then why are you complaining that 'a' and 'b' are not words? They are brief and simple, and that's all that matters. Oh, and also they don't sound silly.

In almost all programming languages, except HTML and CSS, letters are used for actual functions already in the library. Look at websites who have encrypted javascript in their view source. Single letters such as a, b, x, y etc are used, but they just blend right in. Words like "foo" and "bar" stand out more than "a" and "b" for demonstration purposes, and even more so since they are the most widely used words for that purpose.

Is it the fashion now to greet someone new without an ending punctuation mark? xP

Well you greeted her back ending in an "xP" which is most certainly not punctuation. xP

What, I left out a punctuation mark?! Horrors! I'm ashamed of myself. I'll go fix it. :P

Did I do it before?

Lol! Yeah, you did… check page 19.

Seriously...y'all filled up *10* pages?! :O

This reminds me of the old days… "Wow, I think it's going to take us less than a year to get to 100 pages this time!" =P

Oh my goodness. What is the matter with me today?! Both mistakes are fixed now. (Yes, I am obsessive about grammar, spelling, and punctuation. :P)

What languages are you talking about? How can global one-letter functions work out? What about for loops? I use one-letter variables all the time for small tasks like that.

Okay. You'd think we would have met at some point over three years, but I don't think we ever did.

Javascript would be a common example. View the source on this page. At the top there's a bunch of encrypted javascript that uses single letters. Single letters work fine in normal script, but they're not as versatile for demonstration purposes as short words are.

Actually, emoticons set the tone for the sentence. Consider this:

I hate you!!!!

vs.:

I hate you xP

Big difference!

Those letters, yes they make good variables, especially when you're condensing javascript so no one can read it. But for +demonstration purposes+ short words are best.

Uh… what was the difference again? :P Context is more important in cases like those, I think. And that still doesn't mean they're part of the sentence anyways. =P

Hahaha! I can relate. :P For the first three years I didn't talk to a lot of people. I will note, however, that BB is home to some of the most sociable homeschoolers I've ever met.

Homeschooling does not necessarily make people less social, but it did in my case. Anyway, I'm quickly learning. Watch I'll even… no, nevermind… okay here it goes… :) See! that was an emoticon. I would never have done that last year.

Well then tell me what's the point of emoticons? Emoticons are crucial in the language of online communication.
Like this:

hi matthew this is zach. yes things are going good. whats up?

as opposed to:

Hey Matthew, this is Zach! Yes, things are going good! What's up? :D

Punctuation AND emoticons indicate the tone in which the message is to be read, instead of leaving it up to the imagination of the reader.

So for demonstration purposes, no one needs to worry about all those one-letter variables you were pointing out. There would be no problem using 'a' or 'b' in a demonstration because there are no condensed variable to conflict.

Those same letters are used in other things, which could possibly lead to confusion, when one has demonstration code, actual code, and encrypted code all in one file as it's being built.

Well of course one writes in a manner reflecting the occasion, whether that's to a friend, to an employer, or somebody else. Emails in the latter format are often easier to read the way they were intended to be read by the sender, whereas in the first format it's often left like I said to the imagination of the reader and of what he/she knows of the person.

I am definitely not a quiet person. I think I'll end up being an extrovert as I get more experience in the outside world.

Definitely likely. Part of the reason for my introversion was that most of my social contact years ago was with wackos who go to public school. Young as I was then I naturally thought that was the way everyone was and therefore I kept mostly to myself. Bible Bee vastly changed that, and unless I'm at a place where I know everybody is…well…strange (like at the church I used to go to), I have no problem being extroverted.

5c3d80d9bf04a645711fc934afb54a80?s=128&d=mm

ZachB

A quiet person seems wiser than a talkative person!

Depends. Sometimes a quiet person seems unsure of themselves. Talkative people may sometimes seem less wise, yet on the other hand appear to care more about people because they engage with them. So I don't think that really has anything to do with it.

And whether your friend likes emoticons or not. (I think I write in a different style to almost every person I've been in contact with for more than a few emails.) But anyways, yeah, exactly. :P

For sure! That's why I like to call nationals the closest thing to heaven we will ever experience on this earth. For me as I was able to open up and actually connect with people at Bible Bee those earlier years it inspired me with confidence that yes I can connect with people, which was just the beginning in me "coming out of my shell".
