Evie, Child of Grace

Hi y'all! Although I've been on here for over half a year, I've never properly introduced myself, so (better late than never!) I'm going to now.
My name is Evie, I am the oldest of nine children (six boys, three girls) and I live in the south-east corner of Alabama. We have a little farm with six or so Dexter cows (a half-sized, dual-purpose breed), a couple dozen chickens, a young orchard, and a decent sized vegetable garden. I've seen snow only four or five times, don't care for football, prefer temperatures above 60 degrees, and think grits are wonderful.
I do not remember a time when I did not know God, but I know that I am saved by His sovereign grace alone and am confident that He has foreknown, predestined, and effectively called me to Himself, wretched sinner that I am. Blessed be His Name!
I love to read, manage and help work the family garden, learn about God's providence in history, sew, cook, go barefoot, sing with my family, sing by myself, go to Sacred Harp singings, and tell stories to my little brothers and sister. I have a tendency to write run-on sentences (which I beg you beforehand to pardon), be excessively grave, and spell words wrong (Oh the blessings of spell-check!). I have been blessed by Memverse and have learned and been provoked to thought frequently through these forums.
So now you know a little more about me, the rest I leave for you to discover!

It's good to get to know you a bit better! Yeah, I'm always working on spelling and grammar too… a few people around here can tell you that. :P :)

You have serial killer crime-fighting cows?! I want one!

Alright. She's a calvinist. Take her off the 'potential' list.

She can cook though, put her back on.

She _says_ she can cook.

She's excessively in the grave.

Does that mean she's a zombie!?

No, it means she isn't happy and doesn't like awesome stuff.

Take her off the list.

Uhhh… looks up "dexter" in the dictionary.
Ah ha! I never knew it had that meaning! Very punny. Honestly, I thought you were making that one up at first.
Dexter is an Irish breed of cattle which are serviceable for both meat and milk. And no punning allowed on that one! I might become grave.

I was talking about Dexter the TV show.

So she didn't get it?

Take her off the list.

Hmm….. I'm feeling a little silly.
I apparently did not get it. I thought you were making a further pun on the fact that dexter is a term in heraldry which means "right" or the opposite of sinister (left). I figured you were punning on the other meaning of sinister (harmful, evil). For future reference, I will probably miss every joke you make about current TV shows as we do not have cable.
I think I got everything else though, and sadly enough, I do know what zombies are (for real).

P.S. You know, you really ought to reconsider your view on Calvinism. All my assertions were directly from Scripture (see Ephesians 2:8-10 and Romans 8:29-30) :)

Thank you, you're very comforting. I suppose there are worse things to miss.

EDIT: I really, really hope that didn't sound sarcastic. It definitely wasn't meant so. You are a great example to me of kindness and tenderheartedness. Thank you. :)

So maybe I should start with what history teaches us about Calvinism…Oh! Apparently it disannuls the commandment 'Thou shalt not murder"…..
JK! All of this is in fun! I have naught of a firm belief on this subject!

I don't know what y'all are up to, but we would love to have you. If you would like to stop by for a meal, "just passing through" style meeting, etc., we should be home and available any time in the next few days. Let me know and I can put our e-mail out on my profile. I've talked to my parents and they think it would be great, but no pressure if y'all don't want too. (2 1/2 hours is a good trek!).

EDIT: Just talked to my Mom: She asked me to add that you are welcome to spend the night as well. If you're in an RV we can hook you up, otherwise we have extra beds and sleeping bags!

I knew you were kidding. I was just teasing you, although I'd love to discuss the topic. But do you mean anything by the disannulling the 6th commandment bit?

No, for a Calvinist still may be correct in his theology even though he is a murderer. Its not likely, but just because somebody is extremely demented in one way doesn't necessarily make all his other beliefs invalid.

One of the most exciting, beautiful, and powerful Resurrection hymns I have ever heard. It was written in 1787.

I'd really like Dani M. and Seth W. to watch it; I think y'all would particularly appreciate it.

Oh, I can't watch it right now, not for three more weeks, because we're not allowed to stream videos here. I can't wait to see it, though. Have you heard 'His Robes for Mine'? It was written in 2008, but it's a beautiful crucifixion hymn.

I didn't get your email address- could you get it to me somehow?

I don't think I have heard that song - but it sound really good. I should look it up.
I don't really have my own e-mail address yet; would it work for me to send ya'll an email with the address on your prayer card?

I listened to the piece, and thought it was well done. I haven't quite gotten to the point where I necessarily like the music yet, though there are certainly things about it that I appreciate and can glean from it. The style certainly intrigues me.
Here's an arrangment of the tune "Antioch" from Sacred Harp, but it's more modern musically (and contains piano accompaniment). You may or may not like it, but here's a link where you can listen to it. You can also click the little magnifying glass to view the sheet music. I personally like the TTBB version better, and you can listen to it by clicking on the link near the bottom of the page, but the second half of the song is missing in that recording.

Thanks for sharing. The song was very well done, and I liked it.
The tune is quite popular at singings, I love the line, "March on, pray on, we're gaining ground, Glory, Hallelujah!". I think I almost shout every time we sing it!
I couldn't decide between the TTBB and the SATB versions, which was surprising, as I usually prefer TTBB.
What harmony part do you usually sing?

@ Dani: Tell that to people who say you don't like fun music! :)

Although I have looked at the Sacred Harp website and listened to some of that music I still don’t think I understand what’s going on there. Maybe I’m “judging a book by it’s cover,” but the name of them seems strange, to me. How did they get the name “Sacred”? :)

8778ce1a414246e3347a7139ab99b999?s=128&d=mm

Evie, Child of Grace

I'm not sure of this, but I believe the name refers to the singing voices of believers as a "Sacred Harp", lifted up in worship to God, our music is holy and our voices are instruments of praise. I'll check up on that, and probably get back with you next week. :)

Also, it sounds like I should clear something up. Sacred harp is a very old form of music, but it is still sung at times in Primitive Baptist churches today as well as at singings. (By the way, if you aren't familiar with the term "Primitive Baptist", it probably isn't what you're thinking it is by the name). Singings used to be popular social events, but they have declined very much over the years, now they are mainly attended by old folks. My family really enjoys them as a great way to worship the Lord, but it doesn't take the place of church and we enjoy, appreciate, and sing modern music as well. :)

Hmm… okay. :) As for the singing itself, I like the sound of voices in harmony, but that kind dose take some getting used to… but (from my experience) you can learn to like just about anything with time, if you have an open mind to it.

Yeah, I keep thinking of it as a group, but you’re right- it’s a form/style of singing? When did you first hear about them? Was it something you liked right away? :)

Oh, and I saw your post on the “Prayer” thread… was wondering where you got your license to make things “Official”? jk ;)

That's right!
Well, the story of our hearing about Sacred Harp is way longer than you would imagine, so I'll shorten it. :)
Basically, someone gave us a CD of the music long ago and we thought it was really wierd, though I think we listened to it sometimes just for fun. Then we learned that some of our friends sang it as a family, and my parents started getting together with them to sing. I was a little kid then. About two years ago, we saw that a local historic museum was hosting a singing, and we decided to attend (we thought it was a concert of some sort). Well, when we arrived and saw a bunch of people sitting around singing together, we were surprised and delighted, and through the final help of a gentleman who lives near us, started attending nearby singings when we could. So no, we didn't like it right away. The words have been the best part, to us. :)

My licence? Well, I'm new to memverse, infrequently on the forums, and hardly know anyone! Clearly the one for the job! :D ;)

It's interesting to me that you say the words are the best part for you. I find it hard to hear and understand most of the words unless I'm looking at the lyrics. How many people are in your group? Do they meet on a certain day of the week like a church? I still have questions, but i don't know how to ask them right now. :)

Haha! I had to add that to your description on the MUL, since I was in the processes of editing the list anyway. :)

Yeah, the words can be hard to understand in a lot of recordings, but when you're singing them it's of course no problem. :) The number of people varies a lot. We've been to one sing where our family made up half the people, and to another where there were about 150 singers (a tri-state sing). The average size around here is about 50 folks. Usually, sings are on Saturdays or Sundays, sometimes on week day nights. :)

Hey Evie!
Doing sings like that sounds really fun! :) I would love to go to one, just to see what it's like.

I like your picture! :) You look really familiar for some reason… but I'm pretty sure I don't know anyone in Alabama.

This is the same pic I used on the BB webpage. :) That might be where you've seen it.
I'm soooo glad not to have a grumpy purple hexagon anymore!!!

If you want to go to a sing, fasola.org has a listing of all the sings, I think by state. They are a lot of fun, and I'm sure they would be glad to have you.

Thank you so much, Evie!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you for your time and patience!
Now I am left to wonder….will anyone be able to recognize me? Especially if I change my name tomorrow before the quiz…….:-)
Do you do the quizzes on Wednesdays 11:00 a.m.?
(My mom says her goal is to be more than 5th from the bottom.) :-)
I'll talk to you later! Thank you again, so much!

You are welcome! I enjoyed it and it was quite easy, you didn't seem to need my help at all! :)
Will they recognize you…. I don't know. That would be interesting. Give them a little mystery!
I used to do the quizzes, but quit recently since it stopped working with my schedule. I miss them. :(
