Howdy! My name is Joshua and I'm 15 years old. I am sort-of new here… New to the forums that is. I've been using the memverse website for a month or two now. (Thank you to Nathan Wright for recommending this to me since I was having trouble memorizing scripture)

Some of my interests (I have tons :P ) include: Film making, radio, photography, cross country bike riding, playing piano, railroading, nuclear chemistry, etc.

I'll go into detail on a few of those.

Film Making - I started my own business at the age of 9 that I still use. Right now I am making family friendly videos for a younger audience: ages 5 - 11 years old. Recently I started a second business under which I will (Lord-willing) create more videos which are targeted to the whole family. My primary goal in film making is to glorify God and spread truth to the world. (If you want to know more about my film studios, just ask)

Radio - Several years ago (Under the same company I started when I was 9) I bought a radio transmitter and began broadcasting over the airwaves near my home. Although I am not doing that any more, I have retained my fascination for radio to this day.

Photography - This is a big one. I LOVE photography. (Anyone who wants to see my work, let me know) I take photos of everything - literally. Since spring I've ran over 8500 pictures through my camera. :D

Well, those are the three big ones…

My favorite Bible passage is Matthew 10:28-31. My favorite Old Testament book is either Genesis or Leviticus… Not sure which. My favorite New Testament book is Matthew.

I am SOOOOOOOO thankful to be living in the best state EVER!! :D XD COLORADO!!! It is so pretty up here! And that line in Home on the Range is so true about the skies not being cloudy all day. My favorite place here is Rocky Mountain National Park.

Anyway, that about wraps it up. Feel free to ask questions!

Aha! Josh!i came here to troll but have indeed found a ally in thee! I too am an amateur filmmaker, and though my target audience is significantly older, I suppose we could work together in harmony. I have recently finished filming my first movie over 20/30 minutes (minute man, a superhero/dark comedy), and it shall be out soon!

I'll keep my eye out for it! Where will you be posting it?

It's great to meet more Christian film makers! Nice to meet you! :D

Welcome!!!

I have lot's of friends who really into movie making and drama!

We have a lot of friends here who love photography too! :D

I am a licensed Ham Radio operator! But like you I am not active on the radio now.

That's neat! I only know a few people personally who are into film making.

Photography is a great hobby and can be used as a great business! The only problem is that since there are so many people who have businesses in that area, it's hard to get into the market. :P

That's awesome! :D So is my Grandpa. When I was doing radio, I was actually on 98.3 FM broadcasting around the block rather than on HAM radio. :) It was perfectly legal though because I was complying with the FCC's Part 15 rules.

Welcome to the Forums, Joshua! Great to have you on here!

Thanks! :D

Just to let everyone know, I'll be gone for the rest of the week. I've got some stuff to do, and then this weekend I'll be in a place where there isn't any internet connection. See you next week! Until then, adios, ya'll! :)

I just saw this- welcome to Memverse!

You do some great photography! You should come to AK sometime. ;) I happen to love photography, but I have not done it in a while- the family camera is broken, and my sister's camera is… not great.

Our family is highly interested in film making, especially after attending the Christian Worldview Film Festival in San Antonio.

I really like CO… Of course, I've got great friends down there, so that helps. I would have to say, that after driving all over the U.S., it is probably my second favorite state. Except for the politics, but….

Anyways, enjoy Memverse!

Thanks again! XD Photography is great! Definitely something I enjoy. (Alaska is actually my third favorite state. XD I've never been there, but it looks like an awesome state from the pictures I've seen. Kansas comes in just before at second… XD ) That's sad that your family's camera is broken. :( That's one thing that's nice about the fact that I have multiple cameras myself. If you ever decide to get your own (and I'd highly recommend it) I would get the Canon T3i. That's the one I have, and I am very pleased with it. :) It takes great pictures too! Being that it's an 18 megapixel camera. (Great for a starter camera if you really want to get serious about it. :) )

That's awesome! :D I have never been able to actually attend that festival… (Especially now that Vision Forum is closed. :P ) But I do have a recording of the 2009 one that was very instructive.

I LOVE CO!!! You are right though… The politics stink. :P That is one of the only things that's bad about this place. XD

Thanks! :) (And sorry I didnt reply sooner. :P I was off for a little while.)

I don't like the T3i personally- I prefer Nikon. Do you happen to know anything about Nikon? I've been trying to find someone who can help me with what I need to get….

This film festival wasn't Vision Forum, I think it kind of replaced it.

That's funny… XD I highly dislike Nikon, but I am a huge fan of Canon. Because of this, I dont know a lot about Nikon… But most of what I can tell you is my dislikes about it. :P I could probably suggest a good Canon camera if I knew your needs though. Course, if you want to go with Nikon, I cant really help you there.

Ah yes. Whoops, I mixed up the two. You are correct, the film festival in Texas replaced the one in CA. Since that just started this year (and I was unable to go) I have trouble keeping the two apart. :P Sorry about that. :)

Do tell what you like and dislike about Canon and Nikon! :D

Lets start with Canon. I LOVE Canon. From what I've seen, the quality of the products they make is fabulous. I've heard from my Grandpa that their customer service is good. One nice thing with Canon is that they have kept the same lens mount on their dSLRs and SLRs for over 25 years. So I can use a lens from way back then on my camera from 2011. This is great because I dont have to go buy all sorts of new lenses and sell the old when I upgrade cameras. It's also nice because I can find great deals on old lenses that work just as well as the very expensive new lenses. (And since it's the same mount, I can use either new or old if I want)

So far, the only thing I dont like about Canon is that they over price many of their accessories. There is an easy way to get around this though; just get third party accessories that fit the camera. Many of them work just as well as the ones from Canon.

Canon is considered by many people as the best affordable camera manufacturer in existence. (there are others that are better, but you are talking tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars there… :P ) This is not only because of the durability, of the cameras, but also due to the beautiful pictures they produce (I personally like Canon's pictures rather than those from Nikon cameras), the quality, the fact they dont rip you off, etc.

Now on to Nikon… I dont know a lot, but what I do know causes me to not like it. First of all, they change their lens mounts every few years. :P This forces you to sell and then re-buy your entire lens collection every time you upgrade your camera. :P Also, I've heard from my Grandpa that their customer service is bad… I've seen several Nikon cameras, and here are some of the other things I dont like. First of all, from what I've seen (dont take me up on this, I am not 100% sure) cheaper Nikon dSLRs dont have live view. That is very bad cause I use that all the time… (Live view is when you can see what you are taking a picture of live on the back screen) Not only this, but they dont offer a movie mode. :P Which means you have to get the VERY expensive ones to be able to film a good video. You're probably talking $700+ for the body of the camera alone, with NO lenses (again, I would recommend that you research that yourself cause I am not totally sure). Also, Nikon is kind of glunky to get around… So far, there's not much if anything I like about Nikon.

I've tried cameras from several different companies, and so far Canon beats all the others silly in terms of quality, picture color, etc.

So there is my opinion. XD You asked for it. As I said I am no fan of Nikon… Sorry about that. That probably wasnt what you wanted to hear. XD But in my experience, it's the truth.

Oh yeah, and I forgot to mention, the cheaper Canons (i.e. the T3i) do have live mode, a flip screen, as well as an excellent movie mode. :)

Mkay. I don't have a huge preference for Nikon. I did not realize that they change the lens mounts so often. That is probably what would sell me on Canon. But Nikon does have movie mode, and you can use the same settings for video as photography, just so you know. :) Daddy thought that using the same settings was neat, since we are interested in movie making.

I have yet to actually get some hands on experience with Nikon, since everyone I know uses Canon. And so far, Canon simply frustrates me. I'm sure I could figure out how to use it, but Nikon, from what I have seen and heard, seems easier to use. Also, from just handling a couple of cameras in the store, Nikon seems to fit my small hands a lot better than Canon.

What did you mean by third party accessories? I'm assuming that's just like bag and cleaners, etc.?

One more thing… What's the slowest shutter speed you can get from a cheaper Canon? I need something slower than 60 seconds for the Northern lights. That's something I've been trying to figure out with Nikon, but no one will give me a direct answer….

Well, that is true. Most of the more inexpensive Nikon cameras seem to have movie mode like that (where you can film on all of the settings). I presume they do that just like canon… My Canon PowerShot SX500 IS went for about $200 and had that same video feature. In this case, I was talking about the more expensive Nikons. I had the chance to look at a friend's Nikon a few weeks ago. This was a nice dSLR. I searched and searched, and couldn't find any video buttons or modes anywhere. :P

Once you get the hand of Canon, it's not hard at all! Pushing buttons and other doodads is second nature for me since I've taken over 8000 pictures since spring. Someone who really knows what they are talking about and are gifted in teaching would be a good person for you to ask to show you how everything works and all. My cousin bought his camera (the same one actually) about a year before I bought mine. Back then, his was very confusing to me. :P But he has been a great help, and now doing it is second nature.

Yes, those are some accessories. But in this case, I am referring to the REALLY expensive stuff. Tripods, a battery grip (an essential one if you are going to be using your camera for a long time. I still have to get one of those), extra batteries, Mics for getting good audio, etc. :)
