Wretched Man

Nice to meet you, Kylie Rose. Glad to see another Buckeye on MemVerse! I love the Kettering area! I went to Wright State University and also worked a while in Dayton.

Here's a question for ya': If I told you that I wanted to become a Christian, what would you tell me that I need to do or say or believe?

Haha! Awesome! I love Kettering :)
that is a tough question. You need to believe that Jesus was raised from the dead after dying on a cross. You have to understand why he did that. Once you know that you need to ask him to forgive your sins and believe in Him! After that you need to begin your relationship with Him.

I hope this was what you were asking for :)

Yes, the whole Kettering, Miamisburg, Fairborn area was great when I lived around there. Is it still a booming business area?

Thanks for putting up with my salvation questions, too:

Why did Jesus have to die? Why couldn't He have just come to earth, waved His hands around in the air, and just save everyone that way? Why death? Why Him?

It still has a bunch of businesses, but it hard to find a job.

I don't mind the questions! It makes me think about what it means to be a christian!

Jesus had to die for us because we are all sinners, and in order to get into Heaven we have to be prefect.
Before Jesus people had to sacrifice a lamb, a spotless lamb (If you couldn't afford that a white dove.), they did that because it was a temporary covering for their sins.
Jesus had to die because He was the spotless lamb.
Hebrews 9:22 says, "Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins."
In order for God to take away our sin after we believe in Him, He had to send down His son to die on a cross and rise again three days later. If he had just died and that was it then we would have no reason to believe Him.

Wretched Son #3

Good answers!

A couple more:

What if Jesus didn't die? What if He just came down to earth and lived a perfect life and then went back to heaven? What's wrong with Him just doing that? Doesn't His perfect life take care of our sins without Him having to die?

Wretched Son #3:
If Jesus hadn't died, it wouldn't really have been as big a deal. Also, the wages of sin is death, and since Jesus took all our sins on himself, he had to take the consequences.

But couldn't Jesus, being God, have just waived the penalty for sin by living a perfect life and then going back to heaven? Why did He have to take on our consequences by dying? Who made that rule up?

Genesis 2:17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.

God set up the rule in the garden. The punishment for sin is death.

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Someone who had no sin had to take sin and death on himself to pay the debt. Jesus did that when he died on the cross!

2 Corinthians 5:21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God

Wretched Man

So, you're like sayin' that God made Jesus die? Couldn't God, being God, have come up with a better way to let people go to heaven than making Jesus die?

Well, I don't understand fully how the trinity works. Jesus is God though, and yes, God can do anything he wants. But he doesn't break His Word and he said "the wages of sin is death".

I believe Jesus gave up His life for us out of His love for us though. "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. The hired hand is not the shepherd who owns the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it. The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep. "I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me - just as the Father knows me and I know the Father - and I lay down my life for the sheep. I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd. The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life - only to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father." (John 10:11-18)

Matthew 26:39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will." 42 He went away a second time and prayed, "My Father, if it is not possible fro this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done."

I don't understand everything God does but I know this, I am very glad He did it for me!

Okay. I'll take it easy on you.

I just wanted to draw out of you & Kylie that Jesus had to die because God demanded death as the penalty for sin. Since man is born into sin, he is condemned to an eternity in hell. It took infinite, almighty God to become man, live the sinless life that God requires of everyone, and die a gruesome death on a cross.

He had to die.

The animal sacrifices in the OT were a shadow of Christ's sacrifice. God's wrath, His cosmic anger, had to be appeased (i.e., satisfied), and only the death of the spotless, blameless "Lamb" could satisfy Him. This is called "propitiation," where Jesus satisfied God's dual demand for, one, a perfect, sinless life, and, two, death for sin. No man could ever do the first one, and was/is doomed to fulfill the second one. It took the God-man, Jesus Christ, to accomplish both, and appease God's wrath. Those who reject the Son of God will still taste the eternal punishment of God's righteous anger.

The cross of Christ shows God's hatred for sin, as well as His immutable demand for justice for sin.

Yes, God loves those whom He will save/has saved; but He also loves His glory as much, and will not allow the guilty to escape the eternal punishment for sin against an infinite God.

And that is why Jesus just couldn't come to earth and wave His hands in the air and save everyone. He came to do His Father's will alone, and He accomplished it fully.

Always remember that Jesus didn't come to defeat Satan. He came to appease God's wrath, which, as a byproduct, defeated Satan, as well as death and the grave. This was always God's plan, and it is most wondrous to behold.

I just discovered this forum. Thank-you for all the questions and answers you posted. I've been getting a lot of questions about the 'technicalities' of how and why Jesus had to die to save us. This was a real eye-opener!
