Seth W.

Hi everyone,
Alright, I'm finally creating an Introduce Yourself page. My name is Seth W., I first became aware of Memverse through Daniel Staddon's book "The $100,000 Word" in 2010 after Bible Bee Nationals. I used it a lot all the way through 2011 Nationals, but after that my time here slowed down a lot, until I stopped completely. After nearly two years of inactivity, I decided to come back on in an attempt to re-memorize the many verses that I learned a few years ago but had since neglected. In one sense I'm an old user, but I'm new to many of the recent changes and new people.
I'm a fairly standard Bible Bee Memverser; oldest of 9 children, homeschooled all my life, live on a small farm, etc. I am currently attending a private Christian University in MO and am majoring in Music and Chemistry. I plan to go to Veterinary school after graduating, hence the Chemistry Major. While I do not plan to use Music as a career, I have a passion for music and really want to be a better musician (particularly in relation to church music), and would also really love to teach choir(s) or other ensembles (church or otherwise) on the side whenever I get the chance.
I have a fairly typical 10-year old conversion story; I was raised in Christian home, consistently exposed to the gospel, and knew theoretically pretty much what it meant to be a Christian. One Sunday, after the message (which I don't remember at all), they had something kind of like an altar call (which was unusual), and I just remember God saying (paraphrased) "Come. I'm calling you to myself now, claiming Lordship over you life, and it will bring you peace and joy like you have never had before." I was overwhelmed, and started to raise my hand just as the 'altar call' ended. It must have not escaped my dad's notice, though, because right after the service he asked me what happened, and I told him. I really didn't understand what was happening, but I knew that I felt more joy than I had ever felt before, and a real peace in my heart.
My spiritual life since then has been anything but a smooth slope of easy sanctification and outstanding spirituality. Yet even though I constantly resist the work of the Holy Spirit in my life, God has seen fit to bless me in more ways than I can possibly count.

Miscellaneous
I like going out and spending a couple days in the woods with minimal equipment - some of my brothers and I have done it a couple times and had a good (challenging) time. I appreciate most forms of music, including much modern music, which has a lot more to offer than many people realize. I generally have a slight preference for baroque or renaissance over classical. I love listening to just about any good choral music from any time frame, but in general I tend to like some of the more modern choral composers and arrangers. I enjoy theological debates/discussion and have a hard time not expressing my thoughts on a debate, which can be good or bad. Oh, and I also have an interest in the creation/evolution debate.

Here's a couple quick quizzes about me;

I haven’t read Daniel Staddon's book, but I have heard a lot about it. It must be pretty good!
I’m glad you have an Introduce Yourself thread now! The nice thing about a IY is that if you need to tell someone something you can post it on their thread and it won’t get lost in the conversation as easily as it would on the Social Chat. I remember when you first joined the forums… I didn’t know you, and didn’t like your avatar (do you remember that?)… Now I know you much better (plus, I got you to change your avatar:)), and I’m looking forward to meeting you (and some of the other awesome Memversers) in June!

I smiled at the part in your testimony when you said, “It must have not escaped my dad's notice…” I’ll bet that’s how all Christian parents are, eager and expectant to see their children seeking after the Lord. :)

Edit- I’d like to warn you about a certain Sam E. and Noah C.… they like to tease, and are no respecters of person.

Seth W.

Yes, that's a big part of the reason why I decided to make an IY page, that way if someone doesn't feel comfortable emailing me (or doesn't know how to find my email address) they can put it here, and I should see it.
Was my avatar the green pentagon, or was that for a different account? I don't remember you saying you didn't like it… you may have tried to imply it, but I didn't catch on. You (and Bethany and Carissa) seem to be very careful not to say anything that may be offensive. Occasionally TD's are an exception. :)
Yes, I've been on the forums just enough to get an idea for Sam and Noah's general style of comments. :)

Sarah B.

True! I don’t like the idea of emailing someone a lot when I know they’re busy… an IY page is a good alternative. :)
You’re right. I didn’t tell you I didn’t like that green pentagon… but I asked if you were going to change it several times. I thought it was kinda funny when you said you go me to change my avatar (which is true also). :) No, I’m not normally aggressive, unless someone attacks my dignity, or family (and then it’s all I can do to control my temper).

What color are your eyes? I thought they looked blue in one picture I saw… but then I wasn’t sure. Have you ever read the Sugar Creek Gang?

Sarah B.

Have you read all the books? There are a lot of them! They really messed up the movies. :P

B5398d36188fb1b2fd2bfc030485b821?s=128&d=mm

Seth W.

Feel free to email me any time - if I'm really busy right then I just won't reply until I make time (as evidenced by my long delays in replying to your previous emails). I like your avatar better now too. :)
In the picture I think my eyes are red - normally they're blue/green.

I've read every Sugar Creek Gang book I could get a hold of - I know I missed a few, but I read most of them. I haven't picked one up for a couple years, though.

Sarah B.

Haha! Okay, I'll try… ^not to bombard you with my chatter. jk^ I never want anyone to feel compelled to reply at anytime (unless I say so in my email, post, letter etc.). :)
You once mentioned that you sing Italian songs. What is that like? Do you know how to speak Italian?

Yes! That’s what you and your brothers remind me of- the Sugar Creek Gang! We liked those books so much, when we were younger, that we made the “Clear Creek Gang”… had so much fun under that name (we learned a lot too)!

Edit- Blue/green eyes are good… red seems to suit you well too. :))

I have email addresses for everyone on Memverse Forums who lives in Ohio. The place I had in mind for the get together is rather out of the way for most of us…so I was thinking somewhere in Ashland would be better. I’m not really familiar with that area but I’m sure we could find a park or something there… unless you have a better idea. So my question is when and what time would be best to gather? :)
^(If you want to reply by email you can. Just thought we might be able to get some other peoples thoughts here. :))^

So what would you call it? A beard? :)

B5398d36188fb1b2fd2bfc030485b821?s=128&d=mm

Seth W.

Beard is rather generic, but works. :) Chinstrap or Chin curtain are more descriptive, though not as commonly used.

I don't have any good ideas about where everyone could meet - will it likely be fairly nice outside weather, or is it usually too hot by that time? I don't know about everyone else, but we'll probably be spending the whole day in Ohio.

It would probably be really good to have some sort of activities scheduled, just to give it a little bit of structure. What would be something fun and possibly beneficial that we could all enjoy doing together? Maybe we can put together a short musical something! :P JK… kind of.

Ddd5aeff0d37e8c2aa9782a6316c57a8?s=128&d=mm

Sarah B.

Um…singing? Really? I’m a bit nerves at the thought of singing in front of a choir director like you! :P JK… kind of. My mom suggested we could do some kind of Bible game (I think she’s thinking a small BB). A musical something sound fine… as long as you are heading that up and not I (I'll help!). :)

The biggest thing on my mind right now is the fact that the families (parents) from Akron haven’t committed to coming yet, and it seems as if they are all depending on the other families from their area to commit first before they will. However we haven’t given them a time, exact date, or place to consider yet. So we need to figure out those details and send out an email about it. I’ll find a place if you can give the time and date. :)

The other problems are concerning my family. For one thing it will be a weekday, which means my dad will be at work until around dinnertime. Sadly he will not be able to take the day off. Secondly my mom is pregnant and is not up to spending the day out of the house. I’m pretty sure (Lord willing) I can find a way to get a ride to wherever have the “party”… but if you want to meet my family it will have to be at my house for dinner in the evening (if that works into your schedule at all). My family would very much like to meet you! :)

I like the sound of Chinstrap better then "Chin curtain." Have you ever been asked if you were Amish?

Spending the whole June day out side sounds good to me (unless it's raining of course)!

I'm glad to see you know its proper name!
Chin curtain story:
My Dad (an expert beard-grower) had a chin curtain about a month ago. The folks at work kept calling him "Abe" (who, as a true Southerner, he dislikes), so he found a Beard Chart and put it on his desk. That fixed them. He now has a Wolverine beard (aka pork chops), for the warm weather.

Sarah B.

When my dad first grew his beard someone gave him the name, "Bearded-dragon." I have no idea why. I like it best right after Dad's trimmed his beard… because then it isn't all shaggy. :)
Once he had someone ask if he was Jesus… that was strange! 0.o

That's funny. :)
Asked him what?! Ugh.
My dad got pulled over for walking on post with a large beard and trench coat last year. They said he looked suspicious, and someone reported that he was "looking around corners". This year we said the chin-curtain/Amish looking beard would keep that from happening since Amish are pacifists. ;) I find it funny that down here we so rarely see large jackets that people think they're suspicious. :)

I've been called "Abe" quite a bit. Once I was walking through a YMCA where there was a group of children, and one of them piped up "Look, there's Abraham Lincoln!" :) "Abe" is the closest thing to a nickname that I have.

My brothers were in a homeschool play where wax figures in a museum come to life, including Mrs. Lincoln (but no Abraham), and the comitte asked me to be MC (Master of Ceremonies) one night, so when I did the introductions I wore a tail coat, bow tie, top hat, etc. It was perfect. :) I probably should have gotten a picture.

Have you ever been asked if you were Amish?

Yes. :) Since I'm obviously more conservative than most people at college, I've had several people ask me if I was Amish (for real). :)

Ddd5aeff0d37e8c2aa9782a6316c57a8?s=128&d=mm

Sarah B.

Lots of people have commented on how conservative my family is too… but no one has asked me if I'm Amish. Probably because we don't wear head coverings, and Dad has a full beard (or what ever you call a beard and mustache?).

B5398d36188fb1b2fd2bfc030485b821?s=128&d=mm

Seth W.

Just beard, or full beard. :) I've never heard anyone comment on how conservative our family is - but that may be because there's a lot of similar families in this area. College is a little different, though - and apparently this is a pretty conservative school. :)

Ddd5aeff0d37e8c2aa9782a6316c57a8?s=128&d=mm

Sarah B.

Well, actually the first time I even heard the word "conservative" was when I went to WV last year… that's when I got told that my family was "conservative" like ten times throughout the week! :P Haha! I don't mind… my family is great! I love the way I was raised!

Sometimes I think the State abbreviations don't make much sense. Like MO! Who would have thought of that?! LOL
( I would have had it MI… but I think that's a different state. :P)

B5398d36188fb1b2fd2bfc030485b821?s=128&d=mm

Seth W.

I think that's why - if the first letter/vowel is already taken, they go to the next vowel in the state.

Talking to my family I refer to him by his full name (or Mr. W____), so as not to confuse him with my brother. :)
