Word in the Family
Started by Margaret EddyMargaret Eddy
This topic is for those who are studying Mrs. McMahan's Sword Studies and/or memorizing the passages given in the Sword Study. The current study is Ruth. Please post to let the rest of us know if and when you are working on this study, have any thoughts provoked by the study, or just want to notify someone of your progress. Likely, I will occasionally post poems provoked by the study, and will post them here. They may not make sense to those of you not currently doing it, but that is what you get for not being in the study at the same time as myself.

I'm doing it! :) So far I've memorized all the verses and begun to practice my well-developed skill of procrastinating on the Sword Study (I'm only a day or two behind, but I enjoy doing it on weekends anyway - why couldn't they have written a day for Saturday at least?). How about you?
Margaret Eddy
I haven't memorized any of the verses except the ones I already had memorized, and am on day two and a half. Not very good, but I am in middle of taking two pretty time-consuming courses. However, I wrote a poem on the difficulties of being a judge… that ought to count for something.
Margaret Eddy
PESSIMISTIC RAMBLINGS AND REFLECTIONS OF A JUDGE
It's hard to be a judge right now;
To idols all God's people bow,
To deliver is my mission,
But this people will not listen.
I sometimes lie here on my bed
With questions running through my head,
Is beating the bad guys success
With hearts repenting less and less?
Yes, it's true, I love You best
That doesn't mean I hate the rest
But I've been judging years and years
My warnings falling on deaf ears.
This thing has happened time again
I should be glad it happens when
You lead them back to you through trouble
But I can't see past all the rubble.
With my small mind I can't make sense
Of your long-suffering patience
How long will you endure this sin?
I fear your wrath upon my kin.
I plant but no one's watering
Your people's morals tottering—
I know You must give the increase—
Please make this downward cycle cease!

One thing I found interesting in Ruth was that Obed was named by the women of Bethlehem ("neighbor women" in NKJV). My impression from the book was that Bethlehem seemed a very close-knit community.

HA!!
She used the word charge.
I've been waiting for almost a week. I knew it would turn up sooner or later…evidently it's impossible to resist.

I'm reading every poem you right even if it dosen't make cents to me! :)

Where's the submission form for the treasure hunt?!?!!

Where's the submission form for the treasure hunt?!?!!
I don't think they're up yet…doesn't start for another 19 minutes.
My understanding is that those would only be available after the treasure hunt starts.

Hmm…the first clue is most mysterious. This will require some cogitation.
2 Corinthians 5:17
My thoughts too x)
is trying to figure out that reference…

Please tell Margaret I emailed her.

Why, just why…

Margaret, Sarah says she emailed you.

I'm not allowed to do the treasure hunt :(

That is very nice of you, though I find that sentence rather appalling spelling-wise.
Margaret Eddy
I'm not allowed to do the treasure hunt :(
Why on earth not? ^Is it because of the rhythm and rhymes?^

Dad didn't say why not. ^I doubt it's because of that though.^

WHAT WAS THE ANSWER?!?
Esther Grace
Has anyone tried the treasure hunts yet? We tried it last week and got every answer except the last. Now we're stuck on a riddle for this week… maybe we'll figure it out tomorrow.

So did we. We ended up guessing Joshua 21 and were wrong. It used the word "thirteen" four times, and we thought if that counted the tablets as two separate things and only counting one number per clue, it might be right.
We are also stuck on one of the riddles this week. I wonder if it is the same one… does it have things about the Trinity, and chapter ones?

Yep…we got everything last week but guessed Proverbs 30 on the last clue so were wrong. AND I AM STUCK ON THE SAME CLUE YOU ALL ARE! :P

Apparently, ESV spells Zacchaeus differently than the other versions. For the one treasure hunt that I understood how to do, I answered it "wrong" because I was spelling it the ESV way. Oh well! I probably wouldn't have made it all the way through the clues, anyway :).

The answer to that one was Colossians 1. We got stuck farther in - the one that went:
The shepherd boy man describes
Emotions on this mound
Of more than one
Distorted face
Love paid the debt owed.
We figured it was talking about David, probably a specific psalm of his, that was written on some special mound (the name of the mound would have been the answer).

Aha! It was Golgotha.

Does anyone have any idea if Word in the Family is doing the packing boxes thing this year, and what date it might be?

Excuse my ignorance, but what is the packing box thing? I'm not sure if I've heard of it yet.
