Bible Translations

Our family has used the 1984 NIV for many years but now are considering changing. Does anyone know if the NKJV is going to "stay put" for anytime soon? I noticed the ESV changed copyright edition already and I would like to have a Bible the the version is not going to keep changing "editions".
Has anyone heard if NKJV is going to do an update?
Also, does anyone know how "free" their publishers are in allowing others to quote/use etc… their Bible? (in comparison with the NIV" :)
Thanks!
Also, I would love to hear what is your favorite Bible Translation for Memorizing and why did you pick that translation. :)
2 Corinthians 5:17
This may seem like a stupid question, but why do we have copyrights on the Bible? :-/
And I mostly use the KJV, for reading and memorizing.
I like NKJV as well, for one reason because of the more "modern" words - like you instead of thou. ;-) Its sometimes easier to understand.

I don't know why we do…it just doesn't make sense to me.
I use the ESV for everything and we picked it because 1. some friends were doing the Bible Bee with us in 2011 and we wanted to use the same version and 2. because it easiest to memorize out of (for me). I personally though prefer the KJV.

I've also wondered that. Why? So that no one can quote the Bible in writing? God didn't copyright the original, and he did more work than anyone else, because he was writing it for the first time! The individual writers didn't either. Can't you imagine it, though?
"Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus, to the church in Thessalonica, grace and peace to you through God our father and through the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. Copyrighted 50 AD. We ought always to give thanks for you…"

"no part of this manuscript may be copied or transmitted electronically or in hard copy without express permission from the author(s) given in written form. Grace be with you all, Paul."
lol. Yeah, I too have wondered about that. How can the Bible be copyrighted….and why?
2 Corinthians 5:17
It is the WORD of GOD, and suppose to be FREE to ALL, not copyrighted!
It's not: "all scripture is inspired by man" like a story book or something…. It's by GOD!!!! His word to us as believers, and…..
Now I'm rambling :p sorry…

Basically what this article is saying is that modern Bible translations are copyrighted to reimburse the translators and everyone else who works really hard on these translations. @Emily, most publishers allow quotations from their texts up to a reasonable limit, so your "quotation" might be a little bit off. :)

I sort of understand that….but sort of not…. Lol, I know, but I was replying to Abi who was saying how Paul didn't copyright his letters:)
2 Corinthians 5:17
I sort of understand that....but sort of not...
Ditto….it doesn't and does make sense! :p :-S

Any one using Biblical Greek?
I have been for a few verses, but I when I added more verses,I had to go and input them myself, the problem was I couldn't complete reviewing any of them.
I could get the the letters of the text in like I did for the other previously added verses, but I was unable to get in all the accent marks etc, just the letters of the text.

Welcome Prester John! Sorry for the delay approving your post. All your future posts will be automatically approved.
We do have one user, Richard, who is/was using Biblical Greek quite extensively, but he's not on these forums. His profile on our support site is here: https://getsatisfaction.com/people/oecolampad

Thanks Alex, I think that helped me see what was wrong with the verses I was inputting.
