2 Corinthians 5:17

I want your thoughts….do you think saying "Oh my word" is just like saying or a substitute for "Oh my G–"?
What about "Oh my goodness"?
I've been thinking about this recently, but I want your thoughts as well.

"Oh my word" probably came from "On my word" But from that we got "oh my G–"
as for "Oh my goodness," Us humans have none apart from God so I never use it. :P

2 Corinthians 5:17

Well, I just recently came to the conclusion that "Oh my w-rd" is pretty much like saying "Oh my G–". John 1:1 says: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, *and the Word was God*." (emphasis mine) So I'm striving (with the Lord's help) to remove that phrase from my vocabulary. :)
And that's a good point about OMgoodness.

My word and God's word are vary different. just because the bible is holy dose not mean a dictionary is (the fact that they both have words in them is irreverent). Some things just don't have connections.

Edit: either way its an interjection.

I agree with Roy here. There are tons of words in the world. OMW doesn't have to mean God's Word. In fact, it's inherently the opposite, because it's specifically MY word. :-P

I agree about "oh my goodness", but sometimes I say "for goodness's sake." If someone is being foolish and I say "will you stop for goodness's sake", that's basically asking them to stop for the sake of being good–to be good by stopping. The word "goodness" can also be meant in context of "for the sake of quality."

I don't use "for Pete's sake" or phrases like that, simply because they're st*pid.

Thanks for your input, Nathan! I've always thought about it was MY word…but then I heard somewhere it was a substitution for God's name…after some thinking lead to that verse. I'll talk to my Dad about it as well :) I really do want to be careful with my words…

I don't believe people who say stuff like that. It's like people take any negative possibility of how something could potentially be bad and act like that's the only way it could have originated. "Gosh" is obviously a substitute for "god"; they sound almost the same. But "word" barely even sounds like "god." So I reject the notion that it must be a substitute.

Yeah. After talking to my dad about it, he said it wasn't, but we should try to avoid making habits of saying them. :) Which I agree with.

whether certain expressions are sinful or not, People will notice that your different if you don't use any minced oaths, and (although it's not a testimony in of itself) it can be a factor in when sharing your faith with coworkers and such.

Just something to think about.
