Bible Bee quiz
Today, June 10, at 8:00 PM GMT (4:00 PM EDT), we will have a Bible Bee practice quiz here on Memverse using this blog post. The quiz should last about half of an hour and there will be fifteen questions. For ten of the questions (the first five and the last five), I will post a comment with the text of a Bible Bee verse passage in all five Bible Bee approved versions (NIV, ESV, KJV, NKJV, and NASB) and you will have a minute to post the reference. For five of the questions (they will be in the middle of the quiz), I will post a reference and you will have several minutes to respond with the reference at the beginning, the verse text in the middle, and the reference again at the end. Please also include your version to make it easier for scoring. For example, if I comment with Genesis 1:1, the correct response would be something like this:
Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Genesis 1:1 NIV
You can receive a maximum of 12 points for each type of question. I hope to score very much like the Bible Bee for errors in the verse "recitations" (the middle five questions). For the questions where you post a reference for the verse text given, you will receive four points for the correct book, four points for the correct chapter, and four points for the correct verse number. For example, if you posted 2 John 1:9 instead of 1 John 1:9, you would receive 8 points.
Over half of the questions will be Primary verses and a few will be drawn from the Junior verses.
If you would like to help score, please let me know. Scoring the verse "recitations" will be the most difficult.
If you plan to be participating in the quiz or have any questions, please indicate that in a comment below. Hope to see you there! Thanks.
UPDATE: Thank you to everyone who participated and especially to those who helped score: Chelse Brun, Zachary Baas, vburk, SavedByGrace, and Phil Walker.

Alex, count me in to participate and to also help score. Simply direct me as to how I can help. Thanks for doing this. See you at 4:00
I will be participating in the quiz. I can also help score KJV "recitations." How will I post the scores after I figure them out?
There are three people in my family that will be doing the quiz, but only two computers. Would it be alright if I just posted my brother's answer with mine?
I'll be there! I'm in the junior division, and I am progressing quite well using memverse. I hope everyone scores well!
vburk - That's fine.
Christian Alexander - I hope you can make a future quiz. Is there a better time for you in general?
Everyone interested in scoring: Please be familiar with the Bible Bee scoring rules for Judges, especially page 17: http://www.biblebee.org/rulebook/index.html. We will do scoring at the end. If you don't mind, at the end I will ask each of you to score two or more people for the "recitations" and that should get the job done faster (you won't be scoring yourself). I will score the reference responses and post the totals at the end. If for some reason you are unable to help with scoring as you initially thought, just please let me know. Thank you for your help!
@ Alex: Actually, I have to go to an event that is specifically from 1:30-6:30 today, so it's not a weekly thing. I should be able to do it whenever you have the next one.
That's great all! Several of you have names that I can't see. Can you update your profile under the account tab so you can receive your scores? You don't have to provide a real name, but at least something to identify you with. Thanks.
Sounds like a great idea! Count me in!
I can help judge, too, if you want. I'm using NIV, but I also have a KJV if needed.
Jamie - I will post questions in the comments and that is also where you will post answers. Thanks.
runner - If you don't know the verse, you can either say "Pass" or just wait for the next reference. Everyone gets the reference at the same time.
vburk - Sorry, you will need to refresh the page (F5 is the shortcut for this on most browsers installed on the Windows operating system). There should be enough time, however, for you to do that.
Good morning, everyone. I'm a little overwhelmed in not knowing the verses as well as I wished. However, I am in and will be able to help you score however needed Alex.
Depends on your browser. I'm on internet explorer, and I have to hit "refresh" if I want to see new comments. It's the two green arrows on the top of the page. They look like the "recyclable" arrows, except that there's only two.
Good morning, Phil, and good afternoon to most of you. :) Don't worry about not knowing everything as you want to. I'm not as familiar with it myself as I might have hoped. Hope you all enjoy the quiz! We'll be starting in a few minutes.
SavedByGrace - True. We hope to have a better solution at some point. If people read other's answers, though, they are just hurting themselves.
I just won't hit the refresh button till after I've typed my verse. I won't be tempted to cheat that way.
Please post the reference.
Question #1:
NIV: Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array. By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done. This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created. When the LORD God made the earth and the heavens—
NASB: Thus the heavens and the earth were completed, and all their hosts. By the seventh day God completed His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made. This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made earth and heaven.
KJV: Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made. These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens,
NKJV: Thus the heavens and the earth, and all the host of them, were finished. And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. This is the history of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens,
ESV: Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation. These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens.

NIV: Then Hannah prayed and said: "My heart rejoices in the LORD; in the LORD my horn is lifted high. My mouth boasts over my enemies, for I delight in your deliverance. "There is no one holy like the LORD; there is no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God.
NASB: Then Hannah prayed and said, “My heart exults in the LORD; My horn is exalted in the LORD, My mouth speaks boldly against my enemies, Because I rejoice in Your salvation. “There is no one holy like the LORD, Indeed, there is no one besides You, Nor is there any rock like our God.
KJV: And Hannah prayed, and said, My heart rejoiceth in the LORD, mine horn is exalted in the LORD: my mouth is enlarged over mine enemies; because I rejoice in thy salvation. There is none holy as the LORD: for there is none beside thee: neither is there any rock like our God.
NKJV: And Hannah prayed and said: “My heart rejoices in the LORD; My horn is exalted in the LORD. I smile at my enemies, Because I rejoice in Your salvation. “No one is holy like the LORD, For there is none besides You, Nor is there any rock like our God.
ESV: And Hannah prayed and said, "My heart exults in the LORD; my strength is exalted in the LORD. My mouth derides my enemies, because I rejoice in your salvation. "There is none holy like the LORD; there is none besides you; there is no rock like our God.
1 Samuel 2:1-2
Question #14:
NIV: So the LORD gave Israel all the land he had sworn to give their forefathers, and they took possession of it and settled there. The LORD gave them rest on every side, just as he had sworn to their forefathers. Not one of their enemies withstood them; the LORD handed all their enemies over to them. Not one of all the Lord's good promises to the house of Israel failed; every one was fulfilled.
NASB: So the LORD gave Israel all the land which He had sworn to give to their fathers, and they possessed it and lived in it. And the LORD gave them rest on every side, according to all that He had sworn to their fathers, and no one of all their enemies stood before them; the LORD gave all their enemies into their hand. Not one of the good promises which the LORD had made to the house of Israel failed; all came to pass.
KJV: And the LORD gave unto Israel all the land which he sware to give unto their fathers; and they possessed it, and dwelt therein. And the LORD gave them rest round about, according to all that he sware unto their fathers: and there stood not a man of all their enemies before them; the LORD delivered all their enemies into their hand. There failed not ought of any good thing which the LORD had spoken unto the house of Israel; all came to pass.
NKJV: So the LORD gave to Israel all the land of which He had sworn to give to their fathers, and they took possession of it and dwelt in it. The LORD gave them rest all around, according to all that He had sworn to their fathers. And not a man of all their enemies stood against them; the LORD delivered all their enemies into their hand. Not a word failed of any good thing which the LORD had spoken to the house of Israel. All came to pass.
ESV: Thus the LORD gave to Israel all the land that he swore to give to their fathers. And they took possession of it, and they settled there. And the LORD gave them rest on every side just as he had sworn to their fathers. Not one of all their enemies had withstood them, for the LORD had given all their enemies into their hands. Not one word of all the good promises that the LORD had made to the house of Israel had failed; all came to pass.
@ Zachary Baas--just so you know, I doubt any of these will be from the New Testament. Just wanted to let you know.
Joshua 23:34-35
Question #15 (last question):
NIV: But be sure to fear the LORD and serve him faithfully with all your heart; consider what great things he has done for you.
NASB: Only fear the LORD and serve Him in truth with all your heart; for consider what great things He has done for you.
KJV: Only fear the LORD, and serve him in truth with all your heart: for consider how great things he hath done for you.
NKJV: Only fear the LORD, and serve Him in truth with all your heart; for consider what great things He has done for you.
ESV: Only fear the LORD and serve him faithfully with all your heart. For consider what great things he has done for you.
1 Samuel 12:24
YEEEEEAAAAA!!!!! Thta was fun! When is the next one? ;)
How do you help with the scores, what is the methed?
THANK YOU ALEX!!!!!
That was soooo fun!! Can we do one every week?
Don't feel bad, David Stelzl. God could do anything with your knowledge! Even if you don't feel great now, God could be toughening you up for something bigger!
Thanks Alex, I probably not going to be able to help score, because I have to go haul rocks. Thanks.
Thank you to everyone for participating in the Bible Bee practice quiz! I hope you enjoyed it. Let us fear the LORD and serve Him in truth/faithfully with all our hearts, and consider what great things he has done for us. That's more important than how many verses you know. Good job all!
I'll be posting about helping with scoring in a few minutes. Thank you.

Question #4: Deuteronomy 6:4-9
Question #5: Exodus 14:14
Questions #6 - #11: Varies based on translation. Please use reliable source such as Bible Gateway to score. Also note that the NIV version being used is the 1984 edition, not the 2011 edition. Thanks.

Question #12: Exodus 34:10
Question #13: 1 Samuel 2:1-2
Question #14: Joshua 21:43-45
Question #15: 1 Samuel 12:24
Ok, that was a blast!!!
Now that we all know that we need a lot more studying.... How are we going to score this mess???
Do you know when (and what time) the next quiz will be held? This one was soooooooooooooooo much fun!
Hey Alex Watt, could you do these quizzes more often? I'm a brand new member, and I am already learning so much from this website, and that quiz really helped my memory. Would it be possible to do these things on a regular basis?
I'm sorry I've lost track of who can help score. If you can help score, please post a comment with this text: "helpscore" Thanks :)
@ Chelse - mess? God's word was being spewed here - this is gold!
All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,
;)
Zachary Baas, you are absolutely right, but I think Chelse meant the "mess" of comments and unmarked verses. I totally agree that God's Word is not a mess, however.
Zachary - Ja, I know... The point was the format that we wrote it all in. There was no indication as to what question we were answering, so especially the referance test was "out of whack" - Questions were answered way later than the original post, so it will be hard to find everything. That's what I meant!!! Not His word being a mess!!!
vburk - Please score Daniel DeGraaf, Josiah DeGraaf and Zachary Baas. You can post their scores at the bottom here. Nonexistant references are scored based off of which parts were wrong. If they got any part of the reference right (book, chapter, or verse) they receive 4 pts for that part. Thanks
Chelse - Please score runner, Abigail Grace, vburk, and stump.
If I'm giving any of you too much to score please let me know. Thanks.
Alex - how do you score the people? I haven't done this before, and would like some instructions, please.
vburk - If they said "5 John 1:9" instead of "1 John 1:9", let's give them eight points. Does that make sense? Sorry to confuse.
Zachary - Please see the main post for directions about the references, and see the competition rulebook for information about scoring the recitations. If you can only do part of it, that's OK - I can do the rest. Thanks. Competition rulebook is here: http://www.biblebee.org/rulebook/index.html - see page 17.
I recommend you all use CTRL + F to find people's names and record their scores. Let me know of any questions or how I can help.
I'm on it. Great job with the quiz, by the way. This was the warm up. Are you ready for 200 participants next week?
Sarah - Thanks for the correction.
Phil - You don't need to score runner, Chelse's got it covered. No, I'm not ready for 200 next week! :) I'm thinking about how we can automate quizzes. :)
Thank you so much to everyone helping with scoring! I could not do it without you!
vburk - Oh, I get it now! 1 point is deducted for each such mistake.
Joshua - Thanks for offering, but I think I just gave away all the assignments I can think of at the moment. :) I am working on scoring you at the moment. :)
Everyone helping to score - I understand if you have dinner or something coming up. If you can get the scores posted within 24 hours, that's great. I don't want to hold you back.
Zachary - I'm in NIV... I thought I said that at the very beggining... Oops.
Hint for automatic scoring: Quia!
Runner's total: 161
Only one verbage mistake - in 1 Sam 15:22 you substituted "God" for "The LORD" Otherwise mostly that you left off referances at the beggining of the recitation.
Okay, sorry for bugging everybody, but the BB handbook says you get points deducted if you ommit a word AND if you insert an extra word. An example,
Real thing:That thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein
Somebody writes: That thou mayest observe to do according to all the law.
Alex, I would deduct 4 points. According to BB however i should deduct 6?
Jamie got 131 points, David Stelzl Jr got 36 points, and Ben Watt got 97 points. Awesome, guys! Keep up the good work, and it's likely you'll do even BETTER next time! Good work, and remember to give God all the glory! Thanks, Alex, for going through the work of hosting this quiz, thank you all the participants for trying, and thanks be to God for creating us, saving us, and giving us the ability to do things like this! Good job, everybody!
No, BB means 4 in this case too. It is considered to be two wrong words and two insertions. Thanks. I have to go to dinner now and totally understand if you guys need to break. Thank you soooo much!
You're welcome, Alex! (That was probably just for the sake of adding another comment--we're at 350 right now! (: )
As you all post scores, can you let me know if you are scoring the references and the verses or just the verses? Thanks.
Just so you know, Alex, I scored the refs and verses. While you're still here, I was wondering if you could think about letting us review verses whenever we want on memverse. Don't feel obligated, but it's just a suggestion. It gets a little frustrating sometimes. Thanks.
Abigail Grace - 153
Exodus 34:10 was missing, #14 had the right book but the wrong numbers, and Lev 19:2 and Job 2:10 had some errors.
Zachary Baas, my version is the NIV. I thought for sure I said that, but maybe not. vburk, what IS your version?
vburk - That's OK. I'll do him too. Thanks for your help. I am officially taking a break now... I think. :) Again, thanks so much for all your time helping with scoring everyone!
Sorry, I've got to go, so don't try to talk to me. I hope to comment on other blog posts, though. Goodbye!
I'll second SavedByGrace's motion! I would really like to be able to review all my verses more than once here, and this site is the best way I've found yet to review them... Except that I can only do all of them once... Maybe we should add this in the "Feedback" tag on the side of the page???
Thanks Chelse--I think I need to study those references=) I had several providentially blessed guesses in there^_^
vburk - 147
stump - 87
Biggest problem was forgetting the referance. Also, I didn't see number 13's answer - 1 Sam 2:1-2
Hey, I've got a question... I'm trying to give "feedback," (the black tab on the side of the screen,) to add the question about being able to review our memory verses more than once. I'm logged in right now, why won't it recognize me??? And, even after I entered my e-mail and password, it still said that my e-mail address wasn't in the system, even though it has sent me e-mails! What is going on?
WOW!!! Did I really get 180 points?! Thank God! I can't believe it! And Chelse, I'm having the exact same problem! What's going on?
I think you have to have an account on one of the programs listed, not MemVerse. Like if you have a gmail email, you click the google one and type in your email and email password. At least that is what I think it is.
Too bad. I don't know if I even HAVE an account on any of those things. I guess my feedback will have to be in my comments.
Chelse Brun - We use GetSatisfaction for feedback, so you would have to create an account with them to submit feedback on Memverse. It helps everyone stay more organized as far as what features are planned, not planned, under consideration, etc. Also, someone has already proposed the idea of reviewing verses more often and it is something we want to get around to. Thanks. (The idea is that they check verses off on the My Verses page and can review them, but we haven't had time to build that yet. No expectation for when it might be done. I totally agree, though, that I could use that feature, too!)
I'll have to ask my parents if I can get an account on GetSatisfaction. And I can't wait until we get to review verses more often!
Zachary - Yes, some services are like that, but you can usually also create your own account, without signing in through Google, FaceBook, OpenID, etc...
Oh, I get it. But I actually think it would be an ALL TIME record. Maybe not. Like I said, I'm a new member on this website.
Will we know the order as in who placed 1st and last? Or are you not going to do anything like that?
Hi. I had these scores calculated almost 3 hours ago, but then lost internet connection. Living overseas can be interesting at times. My apologies to Alex, Jonathan, Murphy family, Clara K, and Runner.
Jonathan Shabab answered #1, 5, and 6 and got them perfect for 100% and a score of 36
The Murphy family was perfect on number 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 11, and 15. You missed one word in 1 SAMUEL 15:22 and had a great start to JOSHUA 1:7-8. Total points = 95
Clara K was perfect on number 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 12, 13, 14, and 15. You skipped (or I couldn't find) # 2, 10, and 11 For number 9 = Joshua 1:7-8 you skipped a 12 word phrase starting with "so that you may be careful". Total score = 132
For Runner, I got a slightly different score than someone else who posted. I got perfect on #1, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14. I gave you 4 points for #2; 8 points for #15 and 11 points for both #6 & #7. Total score = 166.
Great job everyone and thanks again Alex for putting this on.
Zachary, thanks for scoring me. Please don't take my score of 52 as an indication of lack of interest or commitment to memorizing the Bible Bee verses this year. My computer froze a lot and I also got involved in approving comments that needed approving. Hopefully I will do better next time.
Thanks to Alex for organizing this awesome quiz, and to Mr. Walker for scoring me! When's the next quiz?
I think the difference between the way that Phil and I scored Runner's score is that I took a point off for each missing referance. (At least, that's how I understand the official BB contest rules - one point off for each missing referance when the verse is recited???) So, if someone was missing both the beggining referance and the ending referance in the 5 recitation verses, I took off 2 points. Was this right?
Hey everyone, I'm not positive about this, but I don't think I got 180 points, the most points possible. I looked back and saw that I had put Deuteronomy 34:10 when the answer was really Exodus 34:10. This means that I lose AT LEAST 4 points, so I get AT MOST 176 points, not 180. Just wanted to clarify.
Chelse - You're right on how to score that. I've put your score back up for runner. Thanks.
SavedByGrace - I just made it 176 - that sounds right. Thanks.
Phil, anybody who takes the time to maintain more than 2,000 verses in their memory obviously has a very respectable amount of commitment to God's Word. You're an inspiration to all of us.
Dakota, I started when God got a hold of my heart at age 23. What a thrill to see you and others on here intentionally taking in God's Word and authentically pursuing getting to know Him and His Word at a younger age.
In a way, I would give anything to be able to start again as a teenager in peak memorizing ability with the perspective I have now. However, God knows all and does all things well, and I am content with His timing and purpose in my life as Jacky and I are heading to Indonesia to spread a passion for Scripture there.
i didn't know that there was going to be a bible bee quiz on memverse is there away that we could have another one?
Oh dear, I wish I knew about this!! I am particapating in the Bible bee and would have loved to do this. Will there be another one? soon?
Could we do the QUIZ in the evening sometime like after 7 CST?
will there be reminders sent out in the email for teh quizzes?
Thanks!
About quizzes - I'm thinking about a good time for another one. We are also working on a new quiz feature for Memverse to make these more manageable. If anyone else has suggestions about a good time for a quiz, please let me know. Also, if anyone wants to run a quiz, I can help you get setup. Thanks.
Running a quiz sounds like fun, but I'd have to run it through my parents first.
(424, SavedByGrace! ;))
Jake - I live in PA and my parents are hosting one of the PA Bees: the Southwest PA Bible Bee. Seeing that you are from New York, though, you're probably in another Bee - possibly the Weber's in DuBois, PA.
After 1:00 (EDT) is best for me until June 27. Then the evening would be best on weekdays. On the weekends anytime is fine except Sunday mornings. I can't wait for the next quiz! And if you can't do it during my time needs that's okay.
Oh yeah - I would probably be able to do any day this summer except late August. And of course, I cannot do them until 1 - 1:30p on Sundays! ;)
I can update if this changes (either on this or a new comment).
I'd be okay with doing another quiz whenever one is ready. I'm not doing anything big except the Bible Bee this summer, so I'll be on the checking on the computer every weekday.
(Zachary Baas--430!!)
I will be able to participate in the next quiz but the reason why I wasn't doing this one is because I'm at camp. :)
Sarah - That's fine. Are you still interested in leading a quiz? I'd be interested in leading one every other week or something like that - maybe there are other volunteers? :) Thanks.
Awwwww come ON!!!!!!! I cannot believe I missed this! When will you guys have another one? Can you have one again soon? Please? Because I really want to do this but I wasn't able to get on for a while so I missed the announcement. :( *tears* jkjk :)
@Zachary Baas-- that's probably wishful thinking--but who knows? It could happen! Well... probably not. (437)
Sarah - That would be great. Maybe you can lead one next Friday and I can do one the week after? We can alternate... It is too late to do a quiz tomorrow and I am hoping that we will have a new feature out soon to make quizzes easier. You see what we did - I had Questions 1-5 and 11-15 prepared in a document on my computer with the text of mostly Primary and a few Junior verses in all five BB translations. For Questions 6-10 I just had short references picked out - we don't want anything too long for people that are learning to type.
I was going to try to have everyone enter scores into a shared Google Doc which was why I didn't tell the people helping with scoring what to do right away, but then I decided to ask every person volunteering to help score to score a three or four specific people. I had a list of everyone that needed scored and who was scoring them. Then volunteers posted the scores for people and I updated the blog post.
We'll see how it goes. Let me know what you think. Grace (above) said she might be able to lead a quiz later in the season...
I would be willing to help with scoring the NIV verses.
When will the next quiz be?
Is there a way we could annouce the quizes on the home page about a week ahead of time?
The Fridays I am *tentatively* available at 4-6 EDT are:
July 1st, 8th, and 22nd
August 12th, 19th, and 26th
Those are, of course, subject to change!
Any times that I am available, but not needed to run the quiz, I can definitely help score - preferably ESV, but any version is fine :)

Oh, I missed out on this quiz! *tears* I found out about it after it was over. I would really enjoy if you did another one {hint, hint}! It sounds like a wonderful idea to reveiw our verses!
Bethany Joy
Will there be a quiz Friday 17? If there is please tell me. The last one was fun, as well as a good reveiw.
runner - according to Alex's comment above, there will not be a quiz tomorrow, Friday the 17th. It sounds like Friday the 24th is a possibility... Unfortunately, I will be out of town next week, and will miss it again :(
Alex, I would be able to participate in quizzes on June 24th, July 1st, 8th, and 15th, and August 5th, 12th, and 26th. And basically anytime in the afternoon/evening/or even morning would work. :)
could we do one this saturday morning be cause that would be the best time for me i wont be able to do it all next week or the next so i really would like to do it this week, thank you
Dezmond Ghafouri--is it really "vitto?" I have ALWAYS heard it pronounced "ditto." But I could always be wrong...
Well this is a kind of funny disagreement... For the record I've always heard it pronounced 'ditto' also...
Yup - I've heard it "ditto" too. Oh well.
@BrookeNicole + Bethany - don't feel bad; I missed it too! *sniff, sniff* I like your hint Bethany. That's the hint I tried to give.... :) LOL
@Jake - THANKS!!!! I love it too...But it's not me, as you probably know...do you know who it is?
Why are you talking about Ditto and Vitto? That's just weird. I won't be able to lead a quiz, sorry. I will be available all Fridays.
Ok - I can settle this. www.hyperdictionary.com says that ditto is real and vitto is not.
@ SavedByGrace - 460! ;)
Upcoming Bible Bee practice quizzes: this Friday, June 24th, at 4:00 PM EDT, and next Friday, July 1st, at 4:00 PM EDT. I hope to hold quizzes every Friday and to announce those dates two weeks ahead of time at the next quiz. (I have to make sure nothing else is on the calendar.) I hope to see many of you! Please let me know if you plan to attend. Details to follow. Sorry that some of you are unable to make these dates. Thank you.
I plan to attend both quizzes unless something unexpected comes up. Will the quizzes be here on this blog or will you make a new one?
Stump - Just leaving a comment saying you plan to participate is all I'm looking for. :) Some people just show up anyways, but it helps to know how many people to expect. Thanks.
I have two suggestions, Alex. First, I think there should be more notice before the quiz, like the post being posted the day before. Also, I don't think you should hold a quiz on Friday July 2nd. July 2nd is a Saturday.
Joshua - Thank you for your comments. I fixed that: I meant Friday, July 1st. I don't want to dominate the blog posts with information about quizzes, so I put it in a comment, but I am trying to give more notice this time. I didn't do well with that the first time. Feel free to help promote it. I will ask Andy about creating a new post. Thanks again.
Hey Alex--
I'll be at the next quiz! Thanks for doing it again=)
Alex, I am definitely planning on coming. I can't wait! It's great to do this to help Bible Bee contestants practice. I'll try to come both times. It was really fun and exciting last time.
Zachary Baas-- 468!! Almost there!
Oh, one more thing, Alex. I have noticed that Psalm 128:5 has a typo. It excludes the phrase "may you see the prosperity of Jerusalem." Anything you (or I) can do? It gets me a little confused sometimes. (just 31 comments more, Zachary Baas!)
@Joshua Harrell - I totally agree with you. I didn't have time to get on for a few days and the next day when I logged on I found out that I had missed it. :(
Do you think if you could post an email spot on our pages (a private non-web exposed part) so you could send us an email a day before because I check that more often that I check this because...well...let's not get into specifics...lol...:)
Are there rules for this because I have NEVER done this before and the Junior verses will really help me...what if we don't know the verse - do we just pass?
@Zachary Baas - 470!!! BTW, I met your mother in the 2009 Bible Bee I think...did she volunteer? Was she a runner for the Primary contestants? I think she was...just let me know :) I'd like to know!
@SavedByGrace - I like your name!
Oh, @Alex Watt, I will TRY to be there...I am usually busy every day of the week but I hope I can get time off for this! How long will it last? Oh, and what is 4:00 PM EDT in Georgia, USA -- is that the same thing? Please let me know!!!!
Sorry - I'm rambling. :) LOL
SavedByGrace - That's great! As far as the verse, to report errors you should go to the "My Verses" page, find the verse reference in the left column, and then in the far right column it says either "Pending Verification" or "Verified" or "Editable". If it is Editable, you can click that and fix it yourself; if it is Pending Verification, then one of the admins should catch the mistake soon; and if it is Verified, then you can click on the word "Verified" and it will report an error with the verse. :)
BibleBeeJunior11 - I understand about being busy. By looking it up online, Atlanta, Georgia, runs on EDT, so as long as your region of Georgia goes by the same time as your state capital, it would be 4:00 PM your time.
To pass, you either don't respond or post a comment saying "Pass". We will score your "recitation" like they do in the Bible Bee. For details, please see the Official Competition Rulebook that came in your family box. If you have any specific questions about the rules, I'd be happy to try to explain. Thanks.
hey Alex i started memverse couple days ago and missed thefirst quizz ill try to be in the next I use KJV -thanks
@ Alex--thanks! That helps a lot! I'll do that right away.
@ BibleBeeJunior11--THANK YOU!! I thought it was a good way to express what I really am. I'm nothing by myself--it is only by the power of God in me. (Also, it's easy to tell who your picture is of. I enjoyed that movie a lot! I've been trying to figure out how to do that to my picture. How can I?)
@ all the new members of memverse who are in the Bible Bee--I can't wait to see you on Friday! Hopefully it'll be just as fun or more than the last time. We had a great time! Study hard, and you will do well!
@Zachary Baas--474!
Hey, BibleBeeJunior11, a little detail. I noticed on your account (which is accessible by clicking on a person's name on a comment) that you are on Level 0. You may or may not be aware of this, but it is possible to get to Level 1, 2, 3, etc by clicking on the section "Level Goals" on your account. Well, you don't click on the section itself, but on the "quests" underneath it. When you have completed a couple new quests, you can go on to Level 1, then Level 2, up to...well... I don't know (lol). But I just wondered if you knew that or not. If it helped anyone else, you're welcome! It won't help you with memorizing verses, but it is a fun additive to this website. If you don't care, don't mind me... :)
That's great. I'll put you down as planning on attending. Could you please go to your profile (under the Account tab) and give yourself a name so I can identify you from other participants? (It can be your real name or a pseudonym.) Otherwise, we will have difficulty scoring you. Thanks! Glad to have you on Memverse! It's been a blessing to me.
Oh, Yay! We're having another one! I'm quite excited...I can't wait till Friday, I guess it's time to practice patience =) I'll be participating, if nothing it going on at that time...and I can't think of anything that is happening this Friday.
Alex, I had a question. How will you be doing it this time? I know that last time, you did just Primary verses, are you going to do it that way again?
@SavedByGrace - thank you for the Levels! I didn't know how to do that! I will try that now...I know - I love the movies too. I've seen all three of them and totally want all of them!!! I am a sooo big fan of Georgie...anyway - I do plan on being here if I am able to be online.
I sure hope I can because I think this will be a great way to prepare!
Alex Watt - are you going to make a new blog post for this quiz? or is it still going to be on this one? That would be a LOT of comments :) Is the quiz going to be in the same format as last time? ( 5, 5, and 5) Thanks!
One more thing - does your picture change more as you move up in levels?
@ BibleBeeJunior11--Thank you for the...well, the "thank you." Anyway, I also asked how you can put a picture with a comment. I would like to put a picture of myself on it. Thanks (Oh yeah...not to make you jealous, but I have seen and own all three movies! I hope you can get them soon. :)
Your picture stays the same and is based on your email address. You can customize your picture on Gravatar by creating an account with the same email address you use on Memverse: http://en.gravatar.com/. I will let you all know the details of how we'll do it probably the day before. I do plan to do the 5, 5, 5 format again. Thanks!
Alex, do you have to buy a Gravatar, and do you have a list of choices rather than choosing your own picture?
483 comments, Zachary Baas! :)
Alex - my question needs answered - it is up a few comments. Sorry if this sounds mean. i just would like to know the answers :)
Okay, Alex. I'll see if I can do that. The funny thing is, I was thinking that you wouldn't even be able to make your own image, let alone HAVE to provide it.
Zachary Baas--486 (fourteen more)!
Jamie - Do you mean the question about if I'm going to create a new post? I emailed Andy last night asking how he wants me to do it, so I don't have the answer. Sorry. I'm also working to create a new part of the site for quizzes to be used in the next few weeks. :)
Hey, I just got an idea. I'll need permission from Alex first, but here it is:
What if, instead of just knowing each commenters profile, we could know a little more about them? I don't mean anything personal like an email address or family member names, but I was wondering if each person could type their real name (first, last, middle, or all three), their age, their grade (if they have one, that is) and what their favorite verse is. Alex, if you don't want this, tell me. If permission is granted, no one needs to feel obligated to do this. I was just wanting to know more about who I've been talking to. If you want to keep your identity to yourself, okay. I just thought this would be a little fun. Alex?
SavedByGrace -- I thought it was 11 but then I saw that your comment was published before mine :)
Let's see only 8 more after this one...
SavedByGrace - that's a good idea. I would like to know more about everyone too. And we are almost at 500 comments!
Alex - thanks. I can't wait till the quiz!
Whoops, I guess I'm in the wrong *haha*. You pushed "submit comment" right before I did.
WE MADE IT!
'Tis quite confusing, because you publish your comment right be mine...which throws me off! To get it straight, this is # 505 and your last one was #504.
What version do you use?
The comment that I'm doing now is # 507. Now, I hope you don't publish a comment right before I do mine!
I use the ESV. It was hard to choose because our family always used to use the KJV. And now, the church that we go to uses the NASB. Some friends of ours that are also doing the Bible Bee are using the ESV, so we thought we would use the same version as them.
Do you have any siblings doing the Bible Bee also, or not?
SavedByGrace - If people want to do that, that is their choice. I don't see anything wrong with it, but like you said nobody is required to do it. My favorite verse/chapter is currently Philippians 3 and I'm a Bible Bee Senior (age 15).
Everyone, please try to keep the comments constructive for two reasons:
1) Every comment is another entry in our database which means the entire website gets slower.
2) Comments that don't relate to the original post just add to the clutter.
Before commenting, first ask yourself whether it will benefit most of the people who read it.
We're hoping to add a better place to hang out on the site so it's ok to use the blog for now to chat occasionally.
@Andy: Oh, I'm so sorry! Please forgive me, I know that I'm one of the commenters that comment things like...well, like how many comments we have. Please forgive me. Truly, I'm very sorry.
@Alex: What, you are only 15?! Like SavedByGrace said, I thought you were a lot older than that. You do act mature. I'm 15 also, but I don't think I act as mature as you do.
@SavedByGrace: Sorry, no, I wasn't trying to get imformation out of you before you told us about yourself. I'll stop asking questions :)
As for myself, I'm 15, am in the Senior group. This is the first year that I've done the Bible Bee...and am VERY excited about it!! I'm using the ESV for our memorizing. I'm going into 10th grade.
What! I have no idea what my favorite chapter of the Bible is! I have so many. I think my favorite books are Proverbs, Ephesians, and James...does that count?
No worries, Bethany. I'm psyched to see all the Bible Bee excitement on the comments. I just thought I'd mention it because people might not realize that it affects the whole website.
Alex, Sorry for not getting back to you sooner, but I can run the quiz this Friday. Email me at spoken4byjesus@gmail.com so that I can ask you a couple Q's about how you did the quiz...if you WANT me to run the quiz... :P
Sarah - I will try to explain what I did (anyone can do it) and then if you want to run the quiz, just please confirm that here. I thought I may as well answer this in a comment so others thinking about running a quiz can benefit. :)
I had fifteen questions ready in a document on my computer so that when the quiz was live, I could just copy and paste. I had several tabs open in my browser: one for the Recent Comments (which I was refreshing every few seconds to see how many people answered the question) and one of the blog post we were working on. I had the next quiz question pasted into the comment section of the page, and just submitted it when I thought most everyone was ready. I tried to post questions 1 - 5 and 11 - 15 with just one minute in between, but allowed more time for the ones where people had to type verses (questions 6 - 10). It would probably be best to stick with this format, as I've already said that's how we will do it for this quiz...
For the ten questions where people posted the reference, I had the NIV, NASB, ESV, KJV, and NKJV versions of the verse all ready to go in my document. (I copied these from Bible Gateway and removed verse numbers so that people would have to figure it out themselves.) :)
Getting ready for the other five questions was easier: I just picked references that were one or two verses in length to make it easier for people scoring and for those typing.
As far as what verses to ask, I would ask most of the Primary verses for Week 3. (If you don't have a Primary student in your family, you can go to http://www.biblebee.org/_pages/materials.php to see what verses they had.) Actually, since we didn't have a quiz last week, you could ask entirely Primary verses and pick some from Week 2 and some from Week 3. You can use your judgment. If you're running the quiz, you get to decide what you want to put in. :) I would just try to keep it relevant to as many contestants as possible.
Some questions about format can be answered by looking at what I posted on this blog (try looking under "Edit" > "Find" in your toolbar if you want to find something particularly).
Let me know of any questions and how I can help. If you decide to run the quiz, maybe I can do more with scoring. Thanks!
Thanks so much, Alex! Just let me know if you'd rather run it, or if you want me to. I'm happy either way. :D
@ Alex - I'm planning on attending tomorrow's quiz, unless something comes up. Looking forward to it!
I'd love to, because I'm in the senior division, but I won't be home at 4 PM. :(
