2014 Biblebee topic!

I don't know if anyone has brought this up before, but is it only me who disagrees with the Sword Study when it says that Jonah 4:11 states the population of Nineveh? I think the general population understood the difference between their two hands, so I think it's saying there were 120,000 toddlers, not adults…
Just wondering. :)
Everett C.
According to my study Bible and commentary, when God says that the people of Nineveh didn't know their right hand from their left, he means that they're not spiritually wise and discerning. It's not literal; just an expression. :)
Margaret Eddy
I noticed that. I think John MacArthur says the population was somewhere around 600,000, but I have also heard that it was meant metaphorically.
Matthew Minica
According to my Bible commentary there's a third possibility - that 120,000 refers to the number of adult males eligible to fight, as was customary in the ancient Near East. Interesting to think about.
Child of God
Me too! :'(
Margaret Eddy
At least they told us what their opinion was.
InSoloChristo
I've heard that it's not meant literally too, but I don't really think so. Just checked a couple commentaries - most didn't say anything, but Matthew Henry said this: "It is a great city and very populous, as appears by the number of the infants, suppose from two years old and under; there are 120,000 such in Nineveh, that have not come to so much use of understanding as to know their right hand from their left, for they are yet but babes." Works for me. :)
I don't quite understand the idea about the warriors, though. One, were they all really tough, having two thumbs on each hand? Two, maybe they had lost one of their hands, and thus couldn't tell the difference? Or three, they were big brutish guys who were really dumb, and only good at smashing stuff up?
Oh, never mind. I think I get it now, though I won't try to explain it…
Anyway, thanks for those other hypotheses!
2 Corinthians 5:17
Oh, okay, thanks. :) We didn't get a rulebook! :(
We didn't either!! I'm glad to know we're not the only ones!
2 Corinthians 5:17
Yes, I was wondering this too. 120,000 is big, but in my mind not exceeding great ;-) Just a thought, but the army that Asa had the victory over in 2 Chronicles 14 was 1,000,000!!!
I'm an interested listener to what y'all come up with :D
Justin Gould
Oh, okay, thanks. :) We didn't get a rulebook! :(We didn't either!! I'm glad to know we're not the only ones!
We didnt get one either
Matthew Minica
I think - I'm not sure - that the rulebook was not printed this year, but is available online. O_o
Emma
If anyone wants to see the rulebook, click on Participate on the website, then scroll down… it's underneath Participate at Nationals where it says Read Fine Print Here.
Matthew Minica
wonders why it was placed in such an obscure location
Emma
IKR? They should say Rulebook, not Read Fine Print Here! Those kinds of rules aren't really fine print.
InSoloChristo
Yeah, really! They didn't even bother updating their "annual" document: http://www.biblebee.org/userfiles/annualdocuments/Competition%20Rulebook.pdf !
Justin Gould
How are people who are new to the BB supposed to know the rules?
InSoloChristo
I finished my Sword Study today! Now it's time to copy down all the questions and answers…
God's Maiden of Virtue

GREAT JOB, Justin and Caleb!!!
Jedidiah Diligence Breckinridge III
Hey…
It seems like the Sword Study forgot to have us ever write in the answers to the questions we came up with for chapter 2 in week four…am I missing something?
Andrew
The week 5 day 4 Apply section has you answer those.
Emily H
It was in the Apply section :P :)
Ethan C.
You might have a Competition Rulebook on your Family Control Panel :) We have one.
Emma
We do too, but they used to send an actual book in the box. : (
Ethan C.
Yeah.
Justin Gould
Hey:)
Emma
How do you guys study cross-references for the SS? Do you memorize the references and know what they're about, or just know them when you see them? Do you only study the ones for the Greek/Hebrew words, or do you do the other topical studies as well (e.g., God telling people to be prophets, man crying out to God, etc.)?
Sorry, I know that's a lot of questions. I'm just curious!
^Never mind about curiosity killing some cat!^
Everett C.
1) I use a link system where I link the reference to the main points or summary of the CR. All my links are visual and the image(s) for the reference is generated using an extended Major System (numbers turn into letters which turn into nouns). It's quite complicated and takes a while sometimes, but the advantage is that I don't need to review a lot and is very thorough.
2) I memorize the reference and the main points.
3) I study all the topics, not just the Greek/Hebrew words because you never know what they'll ask :)
EDIT: I actually link the image for the reference to just one main point of the passage. I learn the other main points using Quizlet and my Word sheet containing all the text. The reason I just link to one point is because it keeps it simple and I can move through them quickly.
Emma
Thanks!
Hiruko Kagetane
Goin' back over random stuff from previous weeks. Does Week 4, Day 1 seem like an excuse for you to write painfully redundant questions and answers to anyone else?
Emma
How did you originally memorize the Major System?
Everett C.
I actually decided to build the system as I did the cross-references. So I'm studying the cross-references and memorizing the references and at the same time making the system. So anytime I need to know a reference, I make the image, put in in the Excel sheet and do the rest. I don't use locations for this because the images just trigger each other and there's no need to know them in sequence.
Everett C.
I just counted up all the cross-references in the Junior SS and there's about 273! O_O
ZachB
Verses? Or passages?
Everett C.
Passages.
ZachB
Yea, that's what I thought, because I estimated like 500-900 verses (yea, that's the Senior SS, which I'm doing this year, even though I'm a junior for this year), and I wouldn't think that the Junior would be that much less
Emma
Yikes! I'm Senior!
Emma
So are you planning on going for them all?
And you do keep track of all of the references and your images for them in Excel? That's a good idea to have them all in one place. I'll probably end up doing something like that, too.
Everett C.
Yep. I've got about 120 solid so far.
My images are in Excel and all the cross-references are in Word.
Emma
Ok, so I feel kind of silly asking this, but what exactly is Excel? We have a Mac, so things are a bit different. ; )
For example, our Word is called Pages.
About how much time per day do you devote to BB?
ZachB
You have MAC?!?!?!?!? You need Windows…..anything made by Apple isn't worth it ;-)
Emma
What!!!!!!!!!! What about iPhones, or iPods, or iPads?!?!
Courtney M.
There's like 366 cross-reference passages in the Senior SS, which makes for about 1000 verses! O_o
Emma
Wow…. just wow. But, it's not like you have to memorize the actual verses, you just should memorize the references and their general idea.
Courtney M.
Yeah…that's the hard part though! xP It's easier to remember if you have the actual verse memorized…though I'm not saying I'm doing that…
