That's true….

You have MAC?!?!?!?!? You need Windows.....anything made by Apple isn't worth it ;-)
You're kidding, right?? ;) I like ios over Android for some reason…
Everett C.
I have Windows… Excel is something where you can enter data, graph it, make charts, do math…
I don't keep track. Sometimes I don't even study on a busy day. I'm going to guess an average of a few hours. But I'm going to start doing more in the last few weeks before locals.
Emma
Ok, Apple has its own version of that, too. What exactly do you do on it?
Courtney M.
My cross-reference verse count (or rather the one that my Excel spreadsheet helped me with), is *1551*!!! I haven't weeded out the repeated ones, but still!!!
Emma
What is a spreadsheet, and how did it help you?
Sorry for asking so many questions. Thanks, Everett, for taking the time to answer them!
Courtney M.
A spreadsheet is a Microsoft Excel worksheet. It has as many pages as you need, and each page has rows and columns. I don't know very much about the formula part, but my brother helped me put in a formula to add up all the verses, because I entered the verse count for each reference. Does that help? ;)
Emma
Yes, it does. Thank you!

Hi all
Emma
Hello
Emma
1) I use a link system where I link the reference to the main points or summary of the CR. All my links are visual and the image(s) for the reference is generated using an extended Major System (numbers turn into letters which turn into nouns). It's quite complicated and takes a while sometimes, but the advantage is that I don't need to review a lot and is very thorough.
I tried a few of the first CRs trying to use the Major System, but it was really hard for me to make any words, let alone words that summarized the passage. How many words do you make out of one reference? I was trying to do one for the chapter, and one for the verse (or two if the passage was more than one verse). The good thing is, though, that I spent so long trying to think of words, that I know the first 5 passages' references pretty well now! : P I'll see how long that lasts… ; )

I am using Excel to study too! :) I am entering the reference in one column, the summary in one, then how it relates to Jonah, and finally where in Jonah it can be related to. :) I don't know how well it is going to work, but I am going to try. :)
I have tabbed my Bible for every cross reference and I have used 3 packs of 100! My Bible is VERY colorful with all the different tabs! :) Haha
Courtney M.
Haha, wow, neat! Thanks for the suggestions, Ashley. :)
Everett C.
Major System turns each 2-digit number into an image. I'm going to use Deuteronomy 10:17-18 as an example. First: 10 = t, s = TuSk, ToaSt, TaSer…. 17 = t, c = Tic tacks, TiCk tock = Clock. 18 = t, f = TaFFy. Combining them all gives you a toaster toasting a clock whose hands are made out of taffy. Main themes could be that God is above all, mighty, and just. Link them all together and there you go. As you can see, it's quite tedious. You'll probably have to do 15-20 a day to finish them all in time. I'm going to warn you that if you go this route you might not finish in time. Your other option is to do repetition if you think you can. Spaced repetition programs like Anki are very helpful but I don't know how useful it will be considering that we have just over a month. Quizlet is very good too.
Emma
Ok, thank you so much, Everett!

Why? Android is far more easier to understand, use and operate. Besides, Androids are built way more durable than iPhones
Everett C.
I think ios is quite easy to understand. Lifeproof cases all the way.
Everett C.
This is getting off topic :P

How is everyone's bible bee studying going?

Agreed

Do we know what the Bible Bee necessary memory passages for recitation are yet?
Emily H
Yes! They're on your family log in thing.

I'm new to this whole "studying-like-crazy-for-Locals" thing…so I have a question…
How do you study CRs? And, how should I used my SS as a guide? Really, it seems like a lot of facts…but I'm not sure how I'm supposed to use it to pinpoint where I need to study. I know that I need to do the Word Studies, and I'm going over Jonah, but I'd appreciate more input.
2 Corinthians 5:17
Haha :D Maybe I can give you some ideas…I'm certainly not on expert, but hope these are helpful ;-)
I've copied all the cross references from Biblegateway.com and have them put them under their appropriate topics…like 2 Kings 14:25 is under "Jonah", Psalm 78:56-59 under "What arouses God's anger?" and such. I'm reading through them and highlighting the important things.
I've also been making outlines of each SS Week…Touching the main points, information, CR, etc. But, do keep in mind that the test is based on the Bible book itself, not the Sword Study. From the BB site: "While the tests are written from the Bible rather than the Sword Studies, any contestant who is diligent in completing the thorough inductive study presented in the Sword Study and memorizes and thoroughly understands the Memory Passages should be well prepared for the Written Test Round." I'm also making overviews on each chapter in Jonah.
If you have time, maybe you could memorize the study book. I've done that this year, as others recommended doing so.
Hope this helps you :) Happy Studying!!
ZachB
Are you putting them on Quizlet (privately, of course)?
Everett C.
I think it's time for me to "study-like-crazy-for-Locals" :)
1) I suggest using your natural memory. Read it the reference a few times and figure out the main point of the passage. I can learn 30 in 10 minutes using this way. First only do the cr's for the word studies, and then if you have extra time do the topical ones.
2) Easy, memorize Jonah and then you can figure out all the questions in the SS on Jonah. Learn the cross-references and Greek words and you've nailed it. It seems like a lot of facts because there are a lot of cross-references. If you learn them and memorize Jonah it won't seem like a lot. Keep in mind that in the past, the questions in the SS are generally not used in the test. Learn the context of the memory passages, main themes in Jonah, and balance the memorization with comprehension. Do all of this and you'll be "prepared" for the test.
It seems like a lot but I know for a fact that it's possible. In 2011 I started my SS in August and scored 531 on the test. Break it up and stay focused.

sigh me too! xD

I…wasn't planning on it, but I possibly could. I'm really busy and all so I probably won't but maybe…
I do know there are several CR sets already up.

Are you a Senior this year? :)
Everett C.
Yes I have. Each chapter took like 30 minutes.

I'm finding Jonah much, much easier to memorize than 1 John…anyone else feel the same way?
Emily H
Um, yes!!!
Courtney M.
Yes, yes, yes!
Courtney M.
I think it's because John repeated himself so many times, but phrasing it differently and using different words every time. xP
Everett C.
Yep. For me, narratives are really easy to learn. I just have to imagine the whole thing taking place. They also have a lot more flow and a kind of progression. 1 John was extremely difficult mainly because he repeats himself and changes one small thing, and also because I didn't have any technique.
ZachB
Definitely! I didn't memorize all of 1 John, but Jonah was definitely easier to memorize - probably due to its being a narrative
Emily H
Um, so just wondering, is anyone reading the encourager emails from Bible Bee HQ?
Matthew Minica
Pretty much a worthless observation, but…
I just noticed that this year is the first (I think) in which there are no memory passages from the study book. xP
2 Corinthians 5:17
I noticed that too! But I've memorized Jonah so made up for it :P jk

I am…but why do you ask? :-)

Yup. We did memorize Jonah 1:17 for the Bible Bee in…2010 I think.

Okay:) Oh, I was wondering what everyone thought of their "digging even deeper" things…

YES!!! :D And much easier to remember the order of events. :P :)

Quick question… Is anyone here studying Greek/Hebrew key words outside of the SS? In previous years they ask questions about them and I always end up guessing… And if you are, will you do study just the Hebrew or both Hebrew and Greek? Oh, and I read in the Rulebook that they will ask questions about word studies from the memory passages.
2 Corinthians 5:17
I made a set on Quizlet including Hebrew from Jonah, that wasn't in the SS.

Both Hebrew and Greek. That's how I write 'em in the back of my SS. And, that means it's a good thing I did a list of CRs from the Word Studies! :D

Hey All! :)
So have a quick question…(I know this has been answered before but I can't find the answer)…How many seconds do we have for each question on the Jr/Sr test?
We are getting SO CLOSE!! FREAKING OUT
God's Maiden of Virtue
About 15 seconds per question. ^I know, right?! ;)^
