2 Corinthians 5:17

Hi fellow BB-ers! :)
I'm wondering…can someone give me a recommendation for a Greek lexicon you use and like?
Also, do you at all know of an online, free, biblical Greek course (or it can be offline, it would just be easier for me online free ;-) ) I was thinking it would be interesting to do some basic Greek studies before the BB starts.
Thanks so much for your help!
Rachel

The only thing I know to recommend is Strong's concordance/lexicon. :) If you don't have one of your own, check out biblehub.com. :)

Okay. :) It was really helpful for me in 2012, believe me! :) In 2013 we got Logos Bible Software, which has been unbelievably useful.

In 2012 for 1st place locals I was able to get a free Logos software…but it never told us how we could get it, and I think it's a bit late to get it now :(

In 2012 both Amy and I got one because we both won 1st in our divisions.
Dani: Only a few of the local bees were given that prize.

I use Logos for all my cross-references and Greek words. It's really cool because if you just hover over a word in the text with your mouse, it will give you the Greek/Hebrew word and the definition. If you don't have Logos, E-sword is your next best option. You can get it free: http://www.e-sword.net/

I have a book on my Kindle that does the same thing, but it's a lot slower than a computer. Works well though, if you have a Kindle.

They didn't just give it to you? They just gave us ours at locals...

They gave me a paper saying I had won it, but didn't give me any directions on how to claim it :(

I use greattreasures.org. The intermediate section teaches you whatever Bible Greek words you click on, and the Advanced section… I believe it shows the whole chapter of the Bible you've picked in Greek (and also in English :). And…. you probably know of this already but I'll say it anyway… we have Strong's greek concordance. :) :)

Great Treasures is really helpful. :) Sometimes I like to learn the whole Greek for a verse, and that makes it really easy.

Biblos.com is another REALLY nice website, it incorporates just about everything you could possibly want (greek words, parallel passages, lexicon, commentaries, maps, photos), but you need a fairly quick internet connection, or else it will take forever to load each page. Otherwise, it's certainly in my top 3 favorite online BB study tools.

I have this program on my computer called BibleWorks (I think it's kinda sorta like Logos). When you scroll over the word it will give you the Greek, the transliteration and the Strong's number and definition. You can also search the English word or the Strong's number, which makes it nice for cross references. But I think it's really expensive :P
That's basically what I use, and sometimes the Word Study Dictionary by Zodhiates (which is also expensive :-/) if I want a more detailed definition.

Κούαρτος

Hi Rachel,

I'm not a BB-er but I'll attempt to answer your questions. Ι call myself Κούαρτος on this website. My mother used to call me Richard. I studied Greek formally for two years in college and have been reading and studying it informally for the last forty years. My pseudonym is taken from Romans 16:23 where Κούαρτος is mentioned simply as "the brother". Together with Έραστος, whose slave he probably was, he is said to "give greetings" to the believers in Rome. We know he was a slave because he was called by a number rather than a name. Κούαρτος may be Englished as "Fourthman", as in put God first, others second, the Cause of God and Truth or the Kingdom Agenda third and your(my)self fourth or lower. It's a good name.

And now for my recommendations.

1) Get the best lexicon in English in the world today:
The Concise Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament, by Frederick William Danker; ISBN-13: 978-0226136158
This volume can be purchased currently at Amazon for $45.00 including shipping. Expensive, I know, but still less than most college textbooks.

2) I recommend any of the following websites for learning New Testament Greek in the order given:
http://www.ntgreek.net/
http://www.is888.info/eng/course.php
http://www.teknia.com/classes
http://www.biblicalgreek.org/classes/web/BegWC.php (not free)

I wish you well.

Courtney: I tried to find you on Great Treasures (to share my notes with you) but I don't know your email address. I tried: (your name)@neo.rr.com (your name)@gmail.com (your name)@yahoo.com and (your name)@cnonline.net. None of them worked.

Here's another question for y'all :)

To all Seniors: how many cross-references were approximately included in the Sword Study last year? And also, for all Seniors who were once Juniors after 2009… :)

Can you list some differences you have noticed between the Senior test and the Junior test? Like, is there a lot more theological stuff or cross-references or something like that? Thanks guys :)

There did seem to be less cross references/more theology in the test to me (also more vague questions, but don't get me started on that), I noticed that they would ask the questions about the cross references but would not include the reference itself (like: what does the Bible say about love?) so I was left hoping I thought of the same passage that they did, but wasn't sure (which was EXTREMELY frustrating).

Ok, thank you so much!!! There were about 600 cross-references last year for the Junior division, so I'm going to estimate there's probably about 800 this year :) yeah, they do that sometimes on our test too :) what if they're talking about a different verse? Then you're roast :D Frustrating :)

Ditto to what Margaret said. There have been a few really hard questions that were seemingly randomly picked, especially last year. It pays to know your entire Bible well. Another interesting thing is that they had some questions like "This phrase best represents which concept in 1 John"? Talk about stumpity stump stump stumped!

Wow. O. K. lol So did they say like just generally, like chapter 4 or something, or did they give you particular verses?
