Yay! This is exciting!

I've been wanting to ask a question, so here it is:
Which do you think is better,
1, To finish your SS early, and then move onto other study stuff;
Or 2, Finish your SS about the normal time, and study other stuff as you go?

I always try to finish in early August. The SS is pretty complete so I don't feel it's necessary to do a lot of other stuff. I also try to finish the verses in the first week so I can focus on context and comprehension.

Same here. After filling out the SS, I would focus on learning the material presented in it, like names, dates, and CRs (I used ScriptureTyper for those, which worked very well).

This is very interesting. I haven't really decided what I think. I've never actually finished my SS in July (or June), but I might try this time, and see how I do with it (though it will be different with a switch in age divisions, anyway). I agree that finishing verses early is helpful, and I usually try to copy a bunch of the book at the beginning so that I can go ahead and get that out of the way :).

I think it's better to go through the book as it was meant to. Basically day by day. It's good to not rush and get it done in the first month. It helped this year anyway since the Sword Study left two weeks for extra study. I think it's a really good idea to memorize the verses quickly though. There's not a whole lot of them and the written test mainly focuses on the Sword Study anyway. Once you memorize all the verses, it leaves more time for studying cross-references and Greek words and other stuff. :)

^ ^ ^ ^ I have never done it earlier than it was meant to be finished, but I think that if I did, I wouldn't know what to do with the extra time besides just review the SS, so I would probably start slacking. It gives me accountability. :) And really, pretty much everything you need to know is in it, so unless you wanted to, I don't think it's really necessary to do much other studying.

I try to finish my Sword Study somewhat early; I don't do more than one SS "day" per day though, I do think it's better to focus on just one day's material. After SS though, if I finish early enough, I am able to do a pretty in-depth study on the memory passages as well. That really helped me -this- last year. xD Keep in mind that (unless something changes again :P) there are an equal amount of questions about the book and the memory passages on the Locals test; and a whole bunch of those questions about memory passages require intimate knowledge of the context.

This year, the Rulebook didn't state that 75% of the questions would be on Bible knowledge and 25% on memory passages. I'll be looking for it next year ;)

Interesting… It did seem on the Locals test that a lot of the questions were on the verses, but I thought it was just me. :P It might be because of not having to memorize the verses.

It wasn't just you. It was about half-and-half. It was because they took away the Oral Round at Locals.

What they said. It was actually every other question, whereas in all of the other tests it's every 4th question.

I think we should stop this discussion about the test. The rulebook is clear that we are not to discuss the content of it. We technically can't be disqualified, but I think you get my point :)

What?! Where did you see that? Do you know when Nationals is?

That kinda makes me think the book might be a bit longer than normal…

Bible Bee website. Right on the front page. Have no idea when (or where) Nats is, don't think it's been announced yet.

Why? If anything it will most likely be shorter, IMO.

I was hoping it would be James for locals and Philippians for Nationals, but now I hope they do John for locals or Nationals!

46ebbbfa6be61e25feb8e61dfb37cff1?s=128&d=mm

M27

Oops! I'm a speed reader, and so I thought you said three weeks -after- they normally have it. Maybe they'll do Titus.

46ebbbfa6be61e25feb8e61dfb37cff1?s=128&d=mm

M27

Yes, I'm memorizing John right now, but I'm only in chapter four.

Oh, and I meant to put after in italics, not do a strike-through :).

46ebbbfa6be61e25feb8e61dfb37cff1?s=128&d=mm

M27

Well, maybe they'll still do Philippians for Nationals :). Everyone is very excited here! The website says National qualifiers will be announced on August 14th. I can't wait that long!

46ebbbfa6be61e25feb8e61dfb37cff1?s=128&d=mm

M27

Well, the first chapter is kind of long, so it takes a while to get through. What's your guess for the book? Joy just guessed the Semon on the Mount, which sounds reasonable, and would be nice since we've memorized it as a family (although it is a bit rough :().

The Sermon on the Mount would be fun! Do you do Wisdom Booklets? We've done some of those, so that would be extra fun! :D

46ebbbfa6be61e25feb8e61dfb37cff1?s=128&d=mm

M27

Hi, Courtney! No, I haven't heard of that. Do y'all think they might could do the Ten Commandments for Nationals?

61754db001e2e2ef52b2b9212cdda1ec?s=128&d=mm

Matthew Minica

Ah, maybe, but that's not exactly a "book" so it sounds better for a Nationals "passage". (You know how stingy we get for the specific wording in the Rulebook! xP) Titus sounds about right to me, or maybe 2 Thessalonians. If they go OT again, I'd guess Habakkuk or Ruth.

46ebbbfa6be61e25feb8e61dfb37cff1?s=128&d=mm

M27

Those sound good. I'm going to go check the rulebook, because I thought it said that it could be a passage of Scripture, too :).

5ab872cc6945ba580e254303192f0d15?s=128&d=mm

Courtney M.

I'd like to do Habakkuk! I think now that I've experienced doing OT, I'd rather do that again than go back to NT, since we did that for four years in a row. I was just looking at my old Sword Studies a while ago - I have Colossians, 1 and 2 Peter, 1 and 2 Timothy, 1 John, Ephesians, Jonah, Nahum, and then the 2009 handbook as well!

Those sound good. I'm going to go check the rulebook, because I thought it said that it could be a _passage_ of Scripture, too :).

I think it does say something like that.
