Nationals Choir
Started by Matthew MinicaEvie, Child of Grace
My sister and I sing alto and my brothers sing tenor. They are singing an octave higher than it is written, though.
Sacred Harp is a really, really old (ok, like 17th to 19th century) style of music. It is sung in four-part harmony without instruments and uses shape notes. The doctrine in the songs is so incredibly strong and solid that it makes what we call "old hymns" seem contemporary. It is almost unheard of now, at least among younger folks (like under sixty) ;).
Matthew Minica
I think that he's pushing it, and in a few years, if no one opposes him, there will be a rock band on the BB stage.
All I can say, Dani, is that I think you are grossly exaggerating… I agree with what Evie and Hannah said above.
Hannah W. (Adelaide)
Question for NBB orchestra members: Is Mr Kenniv going to give us music for the last two songs? Or is he going to make us learn it "on the fly"?
Tori K
He said the following: "The last two numbers will most likely not have an audio demo, however, the choir is more of a backup group for the first song with the hymn being congregational. I will send written music later this week."
That was on November 9th. So, I don't know… :P
Hannah W. (Adelaide)
Ok… Thanks :)! I am just trying to understand the last two songs because there was no music……
Hannah W. (Adelaide)
Fun! I like to sing but I think I like to play better ;)!
I love old hymns! I should listen to that! Personally, I don't like/don't understand Christian Contemporary music!
Christine Daaé (Dani the Older)
Well, after listening to his music CDs in 2011, I would say it is definitely a possibility, unless, of course, we do what we did in 2011 and protest… I think there are enough people that would to prevent that from happening, but he may try. But then, again, I'm more conservative in everything than the rest of my family, and most of my friends. However that may be, it goes against my conscience to sing in the choir, so our family is not going to. I'm really disappointed, though, cause I've been looking forward to this all year!
Another reason we decided not to is because some of our close friends, whose opinion we value a lot, would also agree that this is not something we should be singing.
Christine Daaé (Dani the Older)
It is my belief, that the major concern with music is that it be in harmony with the words. For example, a country song about wicked lifestyle shouldn't have a tune that makes you want to dance or laugh. Also, a song about Christ's work on our behalf shouldn't have a sound that makes you want to go hit somebody. I think one reason for my strong dislike of CCM is because of the many churches that we've gone to that use it. I used to be a lot more tolerant of it. And the music does make me want to go hit someone! The choir music, in my opinion, is nothing like this. The words, tune, beat, and key all line up and make a beautiful sound. It is certainly not good for congregational singing, but that is not the intention. It is nothing like rock music in any way that I can think of and I very strongly doubt that it will ever be.
Well, what do you call Acts 10:38-43? It styled after an 80s rock song, which is why my Dad likes it!
Can't wait to meet all of you tomorrow! We're leaving Kentucky today, and will arrive early this afternoon!!!!

I'm leaving to go to the airport right now…..
2 Corinthians 5:17
Have fun at Nationals, everyone!
runs away to cry since I can't go :( JK on the crying, but I am disappointed
Matthew Minica
What was everybody's favorite choir songs this year? :)
Zach Grissom
They were all good.
Emily H
Joyful Joyful or The Light Has Come…
Tori K
Acts 10:38-43.
Emma
Acts 10:38-43.
Same here. I played piano during that song.
2 Corinthians 5:17
Does anyone have any recordings of the choir? I'd love to see them!
Matthew Minica
@Zach - I agree with you! I really liked all of them. As for the actual singing, I probably liked The Light Has Come best. However, as to the sound of the finished product, I loved Acts 10:38-43 and He Is - both gave me chills up my back!
Unfortunately, I didn't to sing in Joyful, Joyful because we were late to the ceremony. :(
EDIT - Which was the other song? I don't remember at the moment…
Zach Grissom
I think they might have the choir on the DVD.

I didn't get these…some one on ST got them.
Elizabeth
Honestly, it's challenging to pick a favorite one! Maybe one of these: He Is, The Light Has Come, Acts 10:38-43. Super grateful for the opportunity to sing alongside SO many brothers and sisters-in-Christ from all over. =)
@Rachel: I think we may have some video clips, but I'm not sure. I think we ran out of memory space during the closing due to so many pictures/videos taken. ;)
Christine Daaé (Dani the Older)
What was everybody's favorite choir songs this year? :)
None.
Emily H
Oh Dani, didn't you at least like He Is or whatever we sang at the very end?
Zach Grissom
What? None at all?
Christine Daaé (Dani the Older)
What? None at all?
None at all.
Zach Grissom
Any particular reason?
Christine Daaé (Dani the Older)
Sorry, I just saw this.
I don't think that style of music is honoring to God, and I don't want to be associated with that kind of 'music'. And seriously, if you're going to write an alternate tune to 'Joyful, Joyful', at least make it good.
Zach Grissom
What do you mean by style? And how is it not honoring to God?
Christine Daaé (Dani the Older)
As one of our friends put it, is it really honoring to sing scripture to a Beach Boy style?
Andrew
And as I hope you were honestly able to respond, "I don't even know what that is."
Christine Daaé (Dani the Older)
Well, actually, I do.
Barachel the Buzzite of the Kindred of Ram
And as I hope you were honestly able to respond, "I don't even know what that is."
Preachit brotha!
Christine Daaé (Dani the Older)
You're not registered for BB, are you? Are you going to do it this year?
Andrew
Then your honesty is commended. No, I am not enrolled in the Bible Bee. It, unfortunately, has not been decided whether I will participate this year. In past years I have done rather poorly in testing, and showed, moreover, poor commitment to the study, which has caused my guardian to be unsure as to the result of the future trial of my commitment in the Bible Bee this year, and the result of allowing me to take up a responsibility which I may show myself unworthy of, and unfaithful in.
Christine Daaé (Dani the Older)
I see. Well, I have -one- three words of advice. Pray. Try harder.
Andrew
Thankyou, I am and do. Same for you.
Christine Daaé (Dani the Older)
Who is auditioning this year? We'll audition, in hopes that it will be better this year, but I doubt it will be.
Courtney M.
I probably will. Aw, come on! Besides, even if it's not your favorite style of music, you could still pitch in!
2 Corinthians 5:17
Would you all recommend doing the choir? I'm not sure if I will or not… :)
Courtney M.
I personally think it's fun, especially because a lot of people that we know do it. :P Would you be soprano or alto?
Matthew Minica
I am definitely going to try out for the orchestra, if they have one again. I miss playing in an orchestra… :\
Emma
I will too. What do you play?
2 Corinthians 5:17
Courtney: I could sing either, but would most likely try out for soprano. You?
Matthew: an orchestra?! Wow!
Emma
It provides the music for the choir. : ) It's a lot of fun!
DesireChrist
It provides the music for the choir. : ) It's a lot of fun!
Yes, I figured that, but the idea of it sounds great :D
Matthew Minica
I play piano and violin - I'll be doing violin II probably.
Ian R.2
Do you have to practice the songs before you get to Nationals? Cause that might hinder my studying time. :\
Emma
You do have to practice them, because when you're there you only have about 4 rehearsals.
DesireChrist

yes, you should…that's why I'm not sure whether or not I want to………

I don't think I'm going to audition if he has auditions again. But my mom's like "Aww, come on, just do it!" :P
JordanTheInfamous
@Rachel…. You should hear how many times I sang through the music before last year….. I was playing piano with the orchestra and then Mr. K. asked me to sing…. I played through the piano piece I had to learn 15 times at the most, and didn't even sing through things with my score till the first rehearsal… and some of the pieces I didn't even sing till the evening of the performance! :P LOL.. I've been sightreading choir pieces for a long time!
