Any big cooking mess ups? Post here! I know there's a topic for In the Kitchen but this one's a little different... :)
I was making a frappe for me and my little brother earlier today. We didnt have any chocolate syrup or choc late chips and my sisters made one before me and just used cocoa powder instead, I was going to do the same. the recipe called for 1/2 C. Chocolate chips and 2 t. chocolate syrup. I just wasnt paying attention and used the 1/2 C. measurement for the cocoa powder! My sisters used 2 t.!!
Wow! that was one strong chocolate frappe!!!

Stopped bouncing off the walls yet?

This was a while ago but it happened:
We were learning how to make bread and we put SALT in the bread instead of SUGAR!
It was horrible. :)
Christine Daaé (Dani the Older)
Cocoa powder doesn't (usually) have sugar in it :P
Courtney M.
Doesn't chocolate make you "bounce off the walls" too? :P
Christine Daaé (Dani the Older)
Chocolate? No! 'Course, I don't eat very sugary stuff- I prefer 90%…
Courtney M.
Well, it does my little sibs, so… :P
Dani(elle)
'Cooking Calamities' gosh this is the forum for me :P lol

Just a quick little tip: don't put salted peanuts and sweet cranberries in a bag together. Bad, bad idea.
Christine Daaé (Dani the Older)
Really? I like it when that happens…
Jess
Word of advice: A half a cup of baking soda instead of flour in pancake batter is not a good idea. Not doing that again. :P

You guys are hysterical. :)

No… That wouldn't exactly… Work.

Here's a little tip for y'all:
2 Tablespoons of flax seed (ground) substitutes for eggs in baking recipes. Not cooking. Most definitely and assuredly not cooking. Scrambled flax seed…yuck…
Yeah, that wasn't a cooking calamity. But…

Yesterday I was cooking, and my mum had to go out of the room for just a minute, we were cooking with a tiny double boiler, and it was filled up to the rim, and I needed to use the electric beater and………..

Not exactly a cooking calamity, but still… I was making homemade hot chocolate a few days ago on our stove, and spilled a little bit of it on the burner. So, I grabbed a napkin and stupidly tried to mop up the liquid. The napkin burst into flames, and I ended up with a little heap of ashes.
Lesson learned: If you spill something on the stove (especially on the burner), DO NOT try to clean it up until the burner has cooled down.
Or else just be prepared to silence your smoke alarm ;)
Sarah
Whoops… I'm assuming you have a gas stove?
Ours is a gas stove, and I think we must have spilled grease on one of the burners at one point, because it only lights properly about half the time. We even tried soaking the burner cover in super-strong acid, but no results whatsoever. :-P

This morning I was making (or so I thought) oat groat porridge for breakfast. I soaked them overnight and then Brianna was going to put it all together. She got all the stuff together and it in the bowls, but it tasted awful! Then later Matthew discovered that I had soaked kamut instead of oat groats…they look almost the same. xP

I had a minor kitchen calamity about an hour ago. I was making a fruit drink to put my evening supplement powders in, so I had some frozen berries in the blender, and I left the lid off because I still needed to put the milk in. But then I needed something that was behind the blender, and in the process of reaching back there, I bumped the "on" button on the blender…and within seconds, there were partially-chopped berries all over the counter and the kitchen floor. And then I was laughing so hard at myself that I had considerable difficulty picking up my mess efficiently. I just hope that nobody finds any red-and-purple splatters on the floor… :-D

Mom did something similar yesterday… in our hotel room :D Only it was a chocolate smoothie.
Sarah
In your hotel room?!?!? Did you get it cleaned up okay?
Dance4Him
Not doing that in our room… But there is no blender. Just an evil microwave and coffee maker.

That one went mostly on the ceiling, so it wasn't too bad, but then Saturday morning Mom spilled one all over the floor… Thankfully, we were leaving that day, so we just wiped it up and left the stickies for the maids to deal with. XD

Worst cheese making mistake ever: Forgot to add the rennet.
Of course, I would never do that- it was Rachel.
Light4theLord
That so reminds me of Dolphin Tale (the movie.) That was one of my favorite parts.

Scrambled pancakes:
Pancake batter
Cast iron skillet with 3-inch high sides
Thin spatula
No grease helps make them more scrambled.
Directions: Make your pancakes, and there you have it!!! Scrambled pancakes!!!
XD

I had to make supper last night because Mom was away. I was making meatloaf and mashed potatoes.
For the meatloaf I had to keep calling Mom because there was several ingredients that either we didn't have or I didn't know how to do it… like the recipe called for grated onion. How do you grate an onion?!?!?!
The meatloaf turned out okay, except I realized during supper that I forgot the egg! That's why the meatloaf was so dry.
The potatoes, I didn't mess up exactly, but I decided to make up my own recipe, Garlic Mashed Potatoes. I poured in a bunch of garlic and tasted it. I couldn't taste any garlic, so I poured in more. I probably ended up pouring in at least two tablespoons. I still couldn't smell the garlic unless I stuck my nose right up close to the potatoes, and I could barely taste it.
Nathan came in the room and was like 20 feet away from the potatoes and was like, "WOW I can totally smell that."
Dad thought it was WAAAAY too much garlic. I could barely taste it. Nathan thought it was awesome.
And everyone keeps teasing me about my "Mashed Garlic with some potatoes sprinkled in"
xP
Emily H
Ohhh, your massed potatoes sound amazing. xD I don't think my mom ever puts enough garlic in anything. xP And I'm afraid that if I put as much as I would like no one else would eat it.
Sarah
Ditto to that! Sometimes I'll eat garlic right out of the press– it grosses my family out every time. xD
Gloria
I do that all the time! I love garlic. ;P My mom puts the salt and pepper in meat, and i always put the garlic and onion and I always put way more than she wants… :p And in the dips… xP
Sarah
high five xP We need a garlic lovers thread. :-P
Gloria
lol! you want to make it? or do you want me? xP
Sarah
Either way is fine with me. xD
Gloria
Ohkay you can make it. ;D
Mommy's Helper
LOL I love garlic too!

Sarah's cooking tip of the day:
Boxed macaroni and cheese=bad idea. Boxed macaroni and cheese+copious amounts of pepper=really bad idea.
Christine Daaé (Dani the Older)
I dumped a loaf of bread into the Dutch oven on its side. But the color was still pretty, and it cracked on the top; what else do you need?
Piece of Peace
Green icing does not like me. I always make a mess with it.

The other day a wooden spoon caught on fire in our kitchen. :P Can't say that's ever happened before!
Katie Grace [K8GB]
Whoa, that sounds dramatic! xD
OksanaP
When my sister is in the kitchen she always burns something. she can never make something without burning it unless its a pound cake. xD
Piece of Peace
@OksanaP - My brother was making boxed macaroni cheese and he burnt the water.
Eirene
How is that possible?
Piece of Peace
If you leave water boiling it will evaporate/burn to the pan. I don't suggest trying it. xP

I was making a creamy dip with chocolate chips in the Vitamix for my sister's graduation party a couple years ago. Now, as you may or may not know, a Vitamix is a very heavy-duty blender, so it chops up just about anything it can get its blades on. If you have the lid on right, then you can reach into the blender with a special tool called a tamper and press the food down. Well, apparently I didn't have the lid on good, so when I pushed down with the tamper, the lid flew off and the blender ground the tamper up pretty badly. Not only that, but the dip came flying out of the Vitamix and landed all over me! I was a sight. I was about to cry, since it was a busy day and making a huge mess in the kitchen wasn't a good thing, but when I saw myself in the mirror, I couldn't help laughing.
OksanaP
WOW! Anna I think my mom had the same thing on her first time doing it. It would of been really funny if I was there. XD
OksanaP
@Rosalina Cassandra III (Legolas) - is your brother a good cook because my brother surprisingly is a good one. we even had a cooking contest for a week and he won with the best food ever! :)
