I didn't google it. "Great woman" gave it away for me. It was a very rare moment of perspicacity. (I used a thesaurus to find that last word.) :)

(My sister's idea):

The weather was warm, so the man propped the window open with his pencil. OR the killer propped the window open at some recent time when the door is not bolted. From a building across the street, his killer, a skilled marksman, shoots through the pencil and into the man. This kills him and breaks the pencil, throwing it onto the floor and causing the window to slam shut.
