Esther Olson (me)

Hello! Now it’s my turn to introduce myself.
My name is Esther Olson. I’m 18 – hold on, I’m 17. (Why did I write 18? Anyway, that won’t matter next month. ) I can’t say when exactly I became a Christian, because I grew up in a Christian home and knew about God. But when we moved to a church where everyone visibly lived out their faith, then I began to understand what it really meant to be a Christian. I’m so thankful for the Holy Spirit working in me.
I live in Portland, in the gorgeous state of Oregon. I’m the oldest of 4, and I graduated this year. It’s funny, though, because I haven’t had that feeling of “It’s so weird to be done with school!” at all, because I have some math to finish, I did the Bible Bee again this summer, and I’ll have debate again in the fall. So I probably won’t feel that way until next summer.
I’m a six-time Bible Bee participant, four-time Nationals qualifier (I didn’t qualify in 2009, and I don’t know about this year), and two-time National contestant (2010 and 2011). I believe I met, or at least talked to, some of you there – if you remember talking to me, comment! I’d love to say hi! This, unfortunately, is my last year. Very sad. However, I am interested to see what God brings my way next summer.
I’m a musician too – sort of. “Musician” makes me think of someone who writes music or someone who plays in an orchestra – neither of which I am. I took piano lessons for 8 years, maybe, then switched to violin a couple years ago, which is now my favorite instrument.
I also like photography. Once in a while I’ll have an inspiration and pick up my Canon Rebel T2i to snap a few photos.
Since our living situation (suburbs) has never allowed us to own a horse, I’ve decided that cats are my favorite animal. It’s hilarious how opposite the personalities of our two cats are.
I love to write, but I’m much better at essays and spilling my thoughts out into my journal than creative writing or fiction.
And how could I forget to mention my favorite pastime – reading! I especially love science fiction, Christian non-fiction (especially stories of great Christians and missionaries), fantasy, and historical fiction. Just out of curiosity, has anyone else read The Giver? The movie just came out (it’s really good, btw), but when I asked around to see who’d read it, none of my friends answered affirmative, to my surprise.

Hi Esther!!! Nice to 'meet' you!!! :D I like playing instruments too, I play flute, piano, and saxophone. :D I have not seen that movie, or heard of it. What is it about?

Yeah!! It actually is very fun, and I get to play in a jazz band that plays really old songs from like the 40's-60's. :D Ok, I will have to look at that!! :D

I haven't read The Children of Hurin, but I HAVE read The Silmarillion. A bit dry, but interesting with how it all ties together with the other books.
