Practice test making
Started by Matthew MinicaMatthew Minica
I put a question mark by your name because you had not confirmed that you were helping yet because of the email thing. I'm glad to hear that you have permission. I took the question mark off of your sister too, assuming that if you can share your email, she can. :)
@Grace: Marked down. I wasn't sure if it was you, your sister Melody, both, or neither so I just assumed.

I just got three more volunteers! Luke Purkey and Kerestel and Alethea Leonard all want to help make tests!
@Bethany Pentimone: I got your email about Nina and jotted the info down on my list. Thank you.
@Bethany or Sarah Frisk: Since Bethany told me that she could share your email, could one of you write me an email so that I can know what your address is? You can find my email address if you click on my name to the left of this comment.

Alright, got it.

Hey Matthew, you said that one of your BB pen pals was named Caleb Montgomery. Would he by any chance live in Washington? If he does, I think I know some friends of his.
Marie Morris
do you have all the info you need from me?
I have access to all 3 levels of Sword study but do not have any at home (a family from church has a child in each level)
I may be out of town some but I would love to help create or proof tests :)
Matthew Minica
Yes, Caleb lives in Washington. He is on Memverse too.
BibleBeeJunior12, I need you to clarify soon whether you will be participating or not, and if you are, then please send me an email. Thank you!
Marie, I have all the info I need. Thanks.
I have edited this post and included some more information on how we will be doing this for anyone who is interested.

How do I jump on board with this project?
It looks like a really good resource.
Matthew Minica
@Sarah - You have said that you might be interested, so I have put you on the list. I have a few things I need to know - specifically, your age division, your bible version, the divisions you can make tests for (i. e. the Sword Studies you have direct access to), and your email address. You can give me the latter by sending me an email at the address you find if you click on my name to the left of this comment. Also, have you participated in the Bible Bee before? If so, have you ever gotten to Nationals?
Caleb Montgomery replied to my email and said that he might be able to help make tests. I definitely have enough volunteers to make two full tests for each division and probably more!
Jedidiah Diligence Breckinridge III
Age division: Senior
Version: NKJV, but I have access to other versions.
Sword Studies: I have access to all three divisions
I have participated in the Bible Bee all four years, counting this one, and made it to Nationals in 2009 and 2011.
2 Corinthians 5:17
I really wish I could help you all, but you already know why…. :) Maybe another time … thanks!
Isaac
Matthew, can I have more details on this. What are the tests? What would I do if I help make them?
Matthew Minica
Isaac, have you read the top post on this topic? If you haven't, please do so now. I believe it should tell you what we are doing. If you have any questions afterwards, please let me know. If you want to help make the tests, please give me your age division, Bible translation, and divisions you can make for. I would also ask for your email but I already have access to it because it's on your account.
Isaac
I will think about it and try to get back to you soon. I am strongly considering it at this point. You are right that did answer my questions. Thanks.
Isaac
Matthew, you can count me in. I am a Junior. You already have my email address. Thanks for organizing this.
Isaac
I am using the NIV version.
Isaac
I also have access to all 3 divisions of Sword Studies, but especially the younger 2.
SavedByGrace
You use the New International Version version? :P
Matthew Minica
Hi Isaac, thanks for joining us! I am curious: have you participated in the Bible Bee before?
@All: I have a new email address that you can access under my account.
Isaac
Matthew,
Yes, I have competed in the Bible Bee 3 times not counting this year. We have done it every year since the first year.
2 Corinthians 5:17
Issac …what contest were you at last year??
Isaac
I was at the contest near Burlington at Antioch Community Church.
2 Corinthians 5:17
alright.
Matthew Minica
Okay all, I have edited the post and given the partnerships. If you are a volunteer, expect your email from me soon. One problem I encountered is that all but one of my Juniors use NIV or ESV, and many of my Seniors use one of the other three versions. This forced me to make several pairs with one Senior and one Junior in it.
Also, if any of you are wondering how Kerestel Leonard, a Junior, is making a Senior test: well, Kerestel and Alethea both are going through the Senior Sword Study, even though they are Juniors.
Please let me know if I've assigned you an age division that you can't make for.

HOW MANY Q'S SHOULD WE EACH MAKE?
Matthew Minica
From the forum post: "I suggest that the volunteers make about 100 questions each to share the load (assuming your group has two members)." I will work out with Thomas, Marie and Grace how many questions they should make.
Jedidiah Diligence Breckinridge III
Matthew, I actually like how it worked out to have seniors and juniors working together. Perhaps we can in a small way implement what we are learning about the relationship between Paul and Timothy.
I know when I was doing the section of the sword study where you had to write down people in your life who fit the roles of Paul, Timothy, Barnabas, Lois and Eunice I was convicted about having more Timothy's to encourage, and the Seniors and Juniors have just enough of an age gap for the older one to really encourage the younger in their walk.
Just a thought. :)

www.quizlet.com has tons of good sets (well over 100 that range from around 5-40 questions each - perhaps a good 1000 for you…..?). Either search "bible bee 2012" or join these groups and use their sets:

Matthew, I am making some practice tests for our Bonfires. Do you have any tips? Thanks
2 Corinthians 5:17
Matthew –Will these tests include an answer sheet, so that after I take the test, I can grade myself?
Matthew Minica
Yes, the tests will include answer sheets. Bethany, you should be making the answer sheets but that will probably be done once you are finished with the questions and compiling the test. I personally like to bold the correct option on each question to make it easy to see, then after I am done I make an answer sheet and un-bold the questions on the test. That can be easily done by pressing Ctrl-A and then Ctrl-B twice.
@Christ-Is-Lord: It's kind of hard to think of any specific tips other than the ones I've already given in the original post on this topic, up a few pages. Just follow the techniques that you remember from previous Bible Bee tests.

Thanks Matthew!

Currently I need two Primaries, two Juniors and one Senior to proof tests. Is anyone interested in proofing one of the tests for us? Basically what the proofers are going to be doing is taking the completed 200-question test, making note of any mistakes as they go. Then they will send the test to me for final formatting before I send it to Alex to put on the blog.
Porque Él Me Amó Primero
I would love to help proof the tests!
RedeemedByTheLamb
I sent you an email yesterday. I can help proof if you need me.
Sarah E.
Emily H
I asked my mom, and she said it was okay for me to offer to help. I'm a Junior.
Matthew Minica
Alright, that makes it just two more Primaries that I need. Are there any Primaries on here (or that have their siblings on here) that would like to help proof?
@Emily: I will need your email address, but I won't give it to anybody else. Thanks for helping!
Ranch4Christ
I was wondering how we are supposed to divide who makes which questions… I know there should be 150 Bible Knowledge questions and 50 Bible Memory, and the Bible Knowledge should include questions from 2 Timothy, Greek word studies and their cross-references, and other cross-references. Should one partner do 100 questions on 2 Timothy, and the other one do the 50 Bible Memory questions plus 50 questions from the Greek word studies as well as cross-references?
Also, I have been unable to get in contact with my test-making partner via email to work this out. I just don't want to end up making a test with a bunch of duplicate questions or not covering enough. Thanks!
Isaac
Matthew, do we have to designate a certain number of questions for bible memory and greek words and other things, or do we just need to make 200 questions?
Porque Él Me Amó Primero
Ranch4Christ- oh, was that me? Sorry if it was! I just found out a couple of days ago that my sister opened my email program by accident on a different machine, so I had not been able to see those emails until now.
Matthew Minica
@Isaac: I think that you should make 50 questions on the memory verses, as that is how many there will be on the actual test. But as for the 150 Bible Knowledge questions, that's really up to you. Nevertheless, here are some suggestions: Maybe about 10-15 questions on the Aerial View of Week 1 and ~35 questions on each chapter, its key words, and the cross-references? For the Bible Knowledge questions, maybe make 50-55% on the content, 10-15% on the Greek words, and 30-40% on the cross references? Or is there another category of Bible Knowledge that I missed? I put question marks on all of these sentences because they are merely suggestions. :)
@elizabeth… that's totally up to you who makes which questions. Except in the case of Marie Morris; she's only making for memory verse questions because she doesn't have direct access to any of the Sword Studies. Bethany and I are evenly sharing as much as we can all categories of questions (memory verses, content, Greek words, cross-references). But if you think it would be easier to assign specific categories to specific people… just make it work however you want to; I don't really care the exact way you do it.
Isaac
@Matthew: Is it okay if we make more than 50 bible memory questions?
Matthew Minica
Is there any specific reason why you would want to, Isaac?
Isaac
Matthew, do you still need help finding proofers? If so, I may be able to help with that but first I would like some more information about them. Also, I am helping to make a Primary test so would that effect whether or not I can help with this? Also, do we have to be a Primary to help proof? If so, I can talk to my brother about it. He is a Primary.
Abigail Lehman
When are these tests going to be ready? I am really looking forward to trying them out.
Matthew Minica
I would appreciate your brother's help! It would probably be better for a Primary to proof the Primary test, so that they will know if a question does not concern material not in the Primary Sword Study.
Isaac
I will talk to him about proofing it. I think he will say yes. He has been asking about this and it sounds like he wants to help with the practice tests. His name is Aaron and he is starting to post on here so he may be the one who tells you that he will do it.
Isaac
Aaron says yes. He will do it.
Matthew Minica
Thank you Isaac and Aaron! So, should I just send the finished test to your email address, Isaac?
Matthew Minica
Alright, I'll copy that email address and send it to him - but you might want to take the address down now because of spammers that might see it. On the forums is not as safe as on the account for an email address. :)
Marie Morris
Here are some thoughts on making tests: first, make answer keys first then the actual test, second, send your test questions to all members of your group for proofing (you cant have too many eyes), this will also help to make sure the tests are not biased toward one specific version or doctrinal persuasion, third stay away from any areas were there is no general consensus in opinion (especially listen to caution from other team members if they have any), remember that each test is to be a fair sample of what a BB test MAY look like. Lastly, remember that everything we do is to be for the glory of God and the encouragement of other believers.
