How to study 1 Timothy
Started by Anna MieczkowskiAnna Mieczkowski
Ok, so I thought I would start a new topic so that we all can share how we're studying 1 Timothy - what tools you are using, what method of dividing it up, how you actually are going about it all, and so forth.
I'm also a first time Senior as well as a first time National qualifier, so at this point, I am lost, confused, perplexed, puzzled, in a daze…….. just kidding! It's wonderful to be able to study God's word so much!
If you want to, you also can share how you memorize the passages and such.
Anyways, hope you all are having a blessed time getting to know your God more.

I use Logos Bible Software a lot for researching passages and even if you just hover over the text, it tells you the greek and definition! But it costs a lot. I also use commentaries.

I hope your sister can help you a lot - I don't think others will be able to help you much over cyberspace. :)
Anyhow, what I do is use a notebook to record all of my observations, write out 1 Timothy, etc. It kind of turns into a miniature Sword Study, but without the vignettes and other extra stuff. I am taking 10 days to study each chapter of 1 Timothy (I already did the Aerial view), including weekends. I am going to take a couple days to do Streetview and take in the whole chapter, and then use the rest of the days to do Under the Rug - study key words and look up cross-references for them.
One suggestion I have is to look for connections between the memory verses and 1 & 2 Timothy. For example, there are a few verses in Genesis 2 & 3 that correspond to the end of 1 Timothy 2, where Paul is talking about Eve being deceived. Although they haven't done this as much in previous years, I think they are purposely choosing verses this year that are cross-references to the study books.

@anna: This is how I study the book of 1 Timothy:
- I read Commentaries
- I use Logos and E-Sword
- I print out the book of 1 Timothy and then I highlight things such as the people in that chapter, the places in that chapter, God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit, Words to find the Greek Word for, characteristics of things/people, etc…
- I write my own "commentary"
That is pretty much I do it. I also look up the cross references, meanings of words, greek words, etc…

If you don't have a Strong's concordance, you need to get one! It is an indispensable tool in looking up key words to get the Greek definitions. I also enjoy looking up the key words in 'The Complete Word Study Dictionary (New Testament edition)' edited by Spiros Zodhiates to get a more detailed definition.
Cross references are really important too. The Word Study Dictionary I mentioned above also lists verses that use the same word or one close to that you are studying.
2 Corinthians 5:17

In Locals this year, I listened to 2 Timothy in all the different versions on Bible Gateway. It helps so you can understand questions on the test that have different words than the ones used in your version.

Hey, you can see Strong's concordance for free all over the Internet, so you don't even need to buy one if you have Internet access! :)

Also, the Vine's Complete Greek Dictionary of old and New Testament words is awesome! :)
2 Corinthians 5:17
A Webster 1828 dictionary is helpful as well.

@All - thanks, guys for your helpful responses. I have a Webster's, a Strong's, and a Vine's for the NT, and - so very, totally obviously - I have Internet.
Do you guys have any suggestions concerning commentaries or study Bibles? Usually they are trying to explain the text - sometimes they have cross-references or deeper meanings of a word (which are obviously two primary things we are supposed to be learning), but do you think it's good also to get a inside look at what the verse means? So do you guys think we should spend substantial time on these? I hope you all know what I mean - I'm leaving this up for all to discuss.
Again, thanks so much and let me know your thoughts.
