Using a Capital when referring to Jesus?
Started by ServantOfTheKingServantOfTheKing
Does it bother anyone when you see the name Jesus or any reference to Him that’s not capitalized? It bothers me. It seems to me like a form of disrespect. What do you all think?
To God be the glory,

I try whenever I am writing about Jesus to capitalize all pronouns or descriptive nouns referring to Him. However, many popular Bible translations (KJV, NIV, ESV, NLT, for example) do not capitalize pronouns referring to Jesus. I am not sure why their translators chose not to do this. I would like to look more into this sometime.

When any direct name of God is not capitalized (Father, Son, Holy Spirit, Jesus Christ, God), it REALLY bothers me, but when any pronouns (He, Him, His, Who, You, etc.) are not capitalized, I am not nearly as bothered. I myself try to always capitalize He, His, and Him when referring to God, but I do not usually capitalize You or Who (e.g., the One Who made the universe). No specific reason–that's just how I do it.
I agree that it seems very disrespectful not to capitalize a direct title of God, but it is not mandatory to capitalize pronouns referring to God, so I don't get as annoyed when I see it. I think that this could be a pretty gray area, but if your conscience tells you that you should capitalize something referring to God in order to show respect, do it!

My parents have brought me up to ALWAYS capitalize any name that refers to Jesus, God, Father, He, Him, etc. It's like a second nature to me. I would REALLY feel like someone who spells any name that refers to God not capitalized is disrespectful!

Not capitalizing a direct title of God is like spelling my name with a lowercase c! (Or anybody else's, for that matter!)

I'm not sure about other versions, but the ESV does not capitalize pronouns referring to God because these pronouns are not capitalized in the original Hebrew and Greek. I usually capitalize them in my writing.

Actually, I think the only translation that DOES capitalize pronouns referring to God is the New King James Version. I think. :)

Pulls out an NASB and a NKJV bible
Turns out, the NASB uses capitals when referring to God, too.

I personally prefer to use a capital when I write God's name and when referring to Him.

I don't usually. (I mean, I capitalize God, Jesus, Christ, Lord, Savior, names like that) but not pronouns. Probably the main reason I do it that way is because I use ESV and ESV doesn't capitalize them.
2 Corinthians 5:17
I always write the names in capital, and always try to write the pronouns in caps too. Sometimes when I'm writing fast, though, it might come out lowercase. xP
