Hello Memversers at large,

I was wondering to myself if Memverse has given any thought to this. I've made a personal project of memorizing the ancient creeds and thought Memverse ought to consider putting them here. (Nicene, Apostolic … but I guess Chalcedonian and Athanasian too, if someone were intense & driven enough to master those lol).

If Protestantism has a characteristic besetting sin, it's our tendency to think/act as though Christianity began in the 1500s. I've found creed memorization to be something that undercuts this tendency in my thought life (e.g. to know that the Romanists & Orthodox could say this creed along with me in full unity, despite our differences, helps me long for the unity of the body). Also, as someone much smarter than me has put it, the doctrine of Sola Scriptura "relativizes all creeds" such that they're binding to the extent that they are biblical (and not just by OUR estimation, but down the hallway of church history). It has been illuminating to ponder where the fathers got some section of their creed from only to realize "oh, they sniped this from 1 Cor 15, and that from Col 1 etc". In this manner, memorizing the creeds has had a synthesizing effect for my mind. Lastly, they are wonderful set prayers.

I know there'll be some practical things to consider like, which translation? or how exactly will 'verses' be assigned etc. But with some consultation (perhaps with some academics who can justify why they recommend one choice over another), those can be easily handled.

So those are my thoughts on the matter. I wanted to share them with the Memversers and see if anyone else concurs, disagrees, is indifferent, and---in all cases---why. Thanks for reading! I look forward to discussion :)

Sounds like a good idea; I really doubt Memverse will be doing anything like this, though - the site's purpose is for memorizing the Bible. I haven't ever been to MemoryTyper.com, just seen ads; but I would recommend it for this purpose (I think it's from the makers of ScriptureTyper and probably has a similar review system).

So in addition to being able memorize Scripture, I'm proposing that Memverse allow us to memorize the ancient Christian creeds. I've listed some reasons up there, but one solid one (considering that memverse is about memorizing the Bible) is that the creeds are taken from the Bible, and their longevity commends them to us. Does that make sense? Lemme know :)

Appreciate all the responses so far!

Ah kay. I understand now. xD

Yea, that sounds like a fun… I use Memory Typer to memorize things besides the Bible.
