What is grooveshark?
A site where you can listen to music for free, kinda like Spotify, 'cept way better. You can also follow your friends, and see what they're listening to, and even join Broadcasts, where users all listen to a set of songs that a user picks, and they can chat and suggest new songs. You should join, if you can. :)
I remember when it took me forever to convince you to get on. xP
You never did. It was Carissa. :P

I did think I got you on… :P I had to even make your account! xD But Nicolas did help me. :)

Ian: Is GS working for you now? :)

Wow, Miles has entered the digital age, and joined Grooveshark,
under the super surprising username: Miles ChristiSum.
^actually, I did a few weeks ago, but this just goes to show how much I actually used it^

I briefly researched the controversy and discovered pretty quickly that GS had been doing some pretty illegal things in the way they operated. Instead of paying record labels for music like they should have been doing, they were basically just ripping music off YouTube and uploading as much as they could to their site. In fact, the CEO made threats to people on the team who wouldn't aid him in operating this way. So, contrary to what they stated on the website, they struggled to maintain ethics and honesty in the way they ran the business. Therefore, in order to avoid inevitable lawsuits that would ruin then, they just shut down the site.

This is for the best, because a lot of us were unknowingly listening to illegally downloaded music. The sites that GS's homepage now lists as alternatives are all legal and in good standing, so I highly recommend transferring your music-listening desires to one of those sites. I personally recommend Spotify, which is something I've been using for close to a month now, and which I really like. It took a little getting used to, but now I know my way around, and it's really cool! The only thing I don't think we're going to get back is the ability to do broadcasts and chats. If someone wants to go on a search for another site that does something similar to what GS did (perhaps one of the other sites on the provided list), I'm sure it'd be much appreciated. But for now, we may just have to resign ourselves to the fact that broadcasting is a thing of the past.

We will all miss GS, I'm sure, but I think we can all agree that it was a good decision to make, under the circumstances. And hopefully other music streaming services will quickly take its place in our hearts and be just as well-appreciated. ;)

Oh no! That is too bad. :(

May I suggest Spotify as a replacement, though. I would contend that it is even better than Grooveshark in some areas, and it is really easy to use. :)

Thank you, Christian, for that good explanation of the situation. I do agree with you. It is like dicovering that you very own child, who you believed to be an angel, is the cookie theif. :(

@jimmy - Thank you for your recommendation! I just got an account there, and am very much enjoying it! It seems like a much more reliable sit than GS. :)

What a let down. Not sure if I should take time to grieve our loss or just plow on
Ho well. Maybe some of us could scout out the other ones for a while and then come back with how they liked them.
I'll take Deezer (the next on the list) unless someone already has something to say about it.

Has anyone had any experience using Sound Cloud?

edit: or not Deezer isn't available in the U.S.

Thanks for that word, Christian =) Although I will miss GS, I perfectly understand why they closed their doors. I'm grateful for the other music websites around, that will sorta take it's place. I already have a Pandora account, so I'm good in that alley.

For those of you who use Spotify: Can you use it on a laptop? Are Galkin and Pettit Evangelistic teams on there?

Nevermind! I downloaded Spotify to our laptop, and they do have have Galkins and Pettits! :D (Even more songs by them than GS had…!)

Yes, Spotify, I have found, has an even wider selection than GS did. Just about everything I've looked for they have – and then some! I discover all kinds of music I never would have thought to look for or that I had forgotten about for years.

Unfortunately, as far as I can tell, there isn't really a friend system. But I could be wrong about that.

I've been able to add Sarah as a friend, and share songs+send her messages, and there is a way to reply, although she can't figure it out on the tablet app. On laptops you can. :) Can I add you? I have to have the link to your profile though…can't search for friends. =/

Oh, okay. Well, I've only been using the mobile app, so that makes sense. I'll have to get on the desktop version soon and see what I can do with that.

Just make sure that it's a plain spotify.com and that there isn't any prefix after that. Often, if you're in another country and there's a different version of the website for your country, Google will sense that and will send you to that separate site. I don't know what the prefix for Greece is (probably something like Spotify.com.gk), but whatever it is, you should be able to get rid of it and access the normal site just by backspacing those two letters.

I'm not sure. I typically don't do things in terms of the Queue. I just listen to albums or playlists. =p I haven't used GS in so long that I basically forgot about the whole concept of a Queue. xP I can look into it for you, though.

Do you have to make an account before listening to music on there? And just for the record, it's like the most confusing site ever…

That didn't work. You just said I didn't have to have an account, but when I go to that link, it says I must…

Well, I would go on GS to listen to music sometimes that I don't have CD or youtube videos of… but yeah, whatever.
