A book can be interesting, but hard to read. For example, a Calculus textbook is interesting, but not easy to read! I enjoyed learning (about a fictitious world) from the book, but it was hard work.

I didn't like it too much, but I read all the way through it. It was interesting.
How can you not like an interesting book?

Something may pique your intellect without appealing to your idea of enjoyment. :)

Tolkien certainly was an interesting man. Not many people go into so much detail to create a book.

I didn't think any book about math could be interesting… :P

Did someone just mention calculus? thinks about the grueling calculus test he did yesterday

Depends on how much time one can devote to it. It takes longer to master the concepts than it does with algebra and trigonometry.

What kinds of things do you enjoy learning about?

Umm…. I don't really enjoy learning anything. But afterward I'm glad I learned it…

Do you enjoy Calculus?

Depends on whether or not the textbook is explaining the concept clearly enough. What curriculum do you use for calculus?

Baking, (I think my brothers are happy I learned that too ;) history (because then I can show off ;) science (for the same reason… except I'm horrible at it) and DEFINITELY HOW TO READ! Except I can't remember if I enjoyed learning that or not.

I'm taking it at our community college as part of their dual-enrolment program. I am taking it online on Webassign.net. What curriculum do you use?

Saxon. It doesn't thoroughly explain some of the vital concepts to understanding calculus, which is why I quit it last year. This year I'm taking it at a local homeschool co-op, and it's going a lot better.

I appreciated his writing when I read through the Lord of the Rings, but I respect him even more now that I've experienced just how much effort he put into creating the world of Arda, and how exceptionally good his efforts turned out. I haven't done a lot of reading, but he is certainly my favorite author at the moment. :)

I know. Everyone I know tells me how bad it is, but I've never had a problem with it until I reached calculus.

Have you ever tried www.khanacademy.org? They have a lot of good videos explaining different concepts in mathematics and science.

Oooh, I love Khan Academy. I've learned so much on that site; it got me re-interested in math, and newly interested in other things. I'd highly recommend it to anyone. :)

I haven't. The teacher at the co-op has been able to explain the difficult concepts better than the book, so I haven't had to look anything up so far.

Oooh, I love Khan Academy. I've learned _so_ much on that site; it got me re-interested in math, and newly interested in other things. I'd highly recommend it to anyone. :)

It also has great, free resources for studying for the SATs.

I never liked Saxon... although I don't remember why. Are you homeschooled as well?

Indeed I am. (I can't think of anyone on Memverse who isn't, actually. :P) I've used Bob Jones for most of my schooling, though.

I've seen that, but not really looked into it. For some reason my parents never had me take the SATs, just the ACTs.

What topic in Calculus are you learning now?

Integrals. In a week or so we will be doing the area under a curved graph.

I am completely disgusted that you guys are talking about math, calculus to be specific, and ENJOYING yourselves!!!!!!!!!!!

Those are interesting, especially using integrals with 3D shapes. They're so practical too. For example, you could use integrals to find out how much energy it would take to blow a planet apart.

How is knowing how much energy it would take to blow a planet apart be practical? ;p
We haven't done integrals with 3D shapes yet. We're still on integrating graphs of two dimensions.

I'm ok, but my ankle is killing me! I was really foolish and went to ballet yesterday. :(

Ooh, ouch. Get plenty of ice on that!
