@Joshua - You probably realize that "shall" is a word typically reserved for more formal contexts. But even in such contexts, it is used in the position of "will" only under certain circumstances. I haven't studied this in-depth, but it has seemed to me that "shall" is typically used to refer to the actions of anyone/thing other than one's self: "they shall," "it shall," etc. But when I am the subject, I say, "I will." That said, "I shall" is not improper; but it seems extremely formal.

This is just a rule of thumb that I've picked up on. I've never seen any hard-set rules regarding the differences between the two words.

Hope you don't mind if I add in my two cents, SBG. :P When differentiated from "shall" (which, as Nicolas pointed out, is not always necessary, especially in informal contexts), "will" refers more to an act of the will, while "shall" refers to a passive, unforced "just going to happen" sort of thing.
I believe this came from Daniel Fierer: it's sorta weird, but a good way to remember the difference. The drowning person says "I shall drown; no one will save me!" But the suicidal person says "I will drown; no one shall save me!" :P
