Christians and Makeup/Jewelry
Started by Tori KTori K
Do you believe that either or both are appropriate for Christians?
If so, how much is too much?
Courtney M.
I don't think either of them are wrong, necessarily, but they can be overdone so easily. I would say that whenever we get to the point where we aren't doing it for the right reasons, be that none, or a lot, of makeup/jewelry, would be a good guideline to go by.

I don’t believe it is evil in and of it’s self. Makeup had never touched my face. Do you know what most cosmetics are made of? Rotting road kill? Aborted babies? This is just what I have heard… and of course there are chemicals, which don’t do any good for your health either (but I’ll over look that one this time since we are practically living with chemicals all around us). So those are my physical reasons for not using it.
The only examples I can think of in the Bible when makeup is mentioned are bad. For example Jezebel panting her eyes, and the like. (2 Kings 9:30)
Jewelry is a subject of much debate. Is it right for a woman of God to wear it?
1 Timothy 2:9 “in like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing, but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works.”
These are two very different ways of using the same substance.
Genesis 25:53 Then the servant brought out jewelry of silver, jewelry of gold, and clothing, and gave them to Rebekah. He also gave precious things to her brother and to her mother.
Hosea 2:13 I will punish her For the days of the Baals to which she burned incense. She decked herself with her earrings and jewelry, And went after her lovers; But Me she forgot,” says the LORD.

First of all, if you're gonna do one, do the other as well. And don't go moderate. When the 5 inch thick makeup job is done, start with rings. Finger rings, toe rings, earrings, noserings, tonguerings, tangerines, eyeball rings, boxing rings, rings around the Rosie.

I think they are fine in moderation. I personally though do not want to wear make up. And I wear very little jewelry…if any. Sometimes I'll wear a locket with a picture of my sibs/friends (I change it sometimes), or a bracelet or a ring that my mom got me.

I agree with you.
And Noah: you really put some nice images in my mind with your eyeball rings…

Another thing…comes Wedding Day, and pastor says "kiss the bride", the broom sees the bride, and the amount of lipstick she's wearing, and fearing it, aims for her cheek instead. But to his shock and horrification, he receives a mouthful of makeup! How would that make you feel?
Sarah B.
That is really gross!!

The only thing I have against makeup is that it's false advertising.

Is this "Theology" anymore? Just wondering….
Barachel the Buzzite of the Kindred of Ram
My arguments were very helpful, were they not?
how could anyone admit to believing in such things as I described?
We…. do?

Facewalls are more effective!! or face swords!

@sol: Many cosmetics do have scary ingredients. There are natural alternatives, though, so you don't always have to sacrifice your health for a little makeup. :)
I understand 1 Timothy 2:9 and similar texts as telling us to concentrate more on inward beauty (a meek and quiet spirit) and to concentrate least on outward things like fashion or makeup.
@Courtney, Stefani, and Carissa: I agree. In moderation, there is nothing wrong with some makeup or jewelry, but they can easily be overdone. But it all depends on your reasons for wearing the makeup or jewelry. A little of either for fun- or makeup to cover an unsightly blemish or something- is fine. But when used to mask insecurity, or for any other purpose not honoring God, then perhaps it is time to evaluate. I am not judging anyone by this; as ultimately it is up to each person's conscience.

Haha, I agree.

I would think that Facepaints would be more appropriate for this topic.

I just don't wear makeup. I accidentally wore it in public once, as a little girl- I was playing with old makeup and put eyeliner on my eyebrows… XP
Courtney M.
XP Yeah, I agree, I don't like makeup either. I prefer the natural beauty God gave me and everyone else than plastering stuff all over my face in order to look "pretty".
Christine Daaé (Dani the Older)
And it generally doesn't look pretty anyways…
Hiruko Kagetane
Well, I never wear makeup anyways.

I've worn makeup multiple times. A lot of makeup. So much that it looks really crazy close up, but looks natural when you're on a stage in a play. :)
EDIT - just to be clear, the only times I have worn makeup were for theatrical performances.

Ah, okay :-)
Emmy
Same here :) Although I've also worn some offstage, but only a very small amount (like a bit of mascara).
But Deadpool, oh my goodness, I hope you were joking! Seriously. I hope you were, but if you're not, pllllease. Give me a break.
I wouldn't want to plaster MY face with makeup (offstage), but I do not believe that women who wear a lot of makeup are less godly or anything than women who don't. Haven't you ever read Romans 14? I believe the same principle applies here.
Hiruko Kagetane
Why would he be kidding?

I've only worn makeup once; that was when Mom put it on me to hide a big scab on my face. :P
I think if you put too much on it's not necessarily sinful, but some people look just hideous with too much! remembers the gold-medal winning American figure-skater Meryl Davis

False advertising, as Noah himself has said.
