July 1 Bible Bee quiz

Time Posted on July 01, 2011 User Alex Watt

Ben Watt is hosting the July 1st Bible Bee practice quiz at 4:00 PM EDT (8:00 PM GMT). We will use this blog post for the first one. We expect the quiz to last a little over half of an hour and there will be fifteen questions. For ten of the questions (the first five and the last five), I will post a comment with the text of a Bible Bee verse passage in all five Bible Bee approved versions (NIV, ESV, KJV, NKJV, and NASB) and you will have a minute to post the reference. For five of the questions (they will be in the middle of the quiz), he will post a reference and you will have several minutes to respond with the reference at the beginning, the verse text in the middle, and the reference again at the end. Please also include your version to make it easier for scoring. For example, if he comments with Genesis 1:1, the correct response would be something like this:

Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Genesis 1:1 NIV

If you do not include your version in each comment, it makes it more difficult for the volunteers helping to score. Omitting a reference or your version will cost you a point for each occurrence.

You can receive a maximum of 12 points for each type of question. For details on the scoring for "recitations", please see below. For the questions where you post a reference for the verse text given, you will receive four points for the correct book, four points for the correct chapter, and four points for the correct verse number. For example, if you posted 2 John 1:9 instead of 1 John 1:9, you would receive 8 points.

Over half of the questions will be Primary verses and several may be drawn from the Junior verses.

If you would like to help score, please let me know after we finish the quiz by posting a comment with the text "helpscore" in it. Otherwise, it is difficult to keep track of who is helping. If you indicate that you would like to help score, I will have information about how to score and will assign you to a few people. You can then look for their answers on the page (CTRL + F in many browsers allows you to search and find their name and comments) and tabulate them on your computer. When you have a final score for a person, you will please post it in a comment with their name. When all scores are returned, this post will be updated with that information.

If you plan to be participating in the quiz or have any questions, please indicate that in a comment below (unless you have already done so on the other blog post). I also welcome any suggestions. Hope to see you there! Thanks.

How we score recitations: The maximum score for a recitation is 12 points. Like the Bible Bee, leaving off a reference at the beginning or end of a "recitation" is a 1-point deduction, as is any one word error (one word omission, insertion, or change - like swapping "created" for "made"). You see above the correct response for reciting Genesis 1:1. Here is a 6-point recitation in NIV:

In the beginning He created the earth and heavens. Genesis 1:1

We start with 12 points, then evaluate the recitation: one point is subtracted for forgetting the reference at the beginning, another point is subtracted for using "He" in place of "God", two points are subtracted for switching "heavens" and "earth" (it was two one-word changes) and another point for leaving out "the" (second-to-last word). Additionally, we subtract a point because the response did not include the version. Please note that you cannot count more than 12 errors - i.e., no one ends up with a negative score on a passage. If you want to help score but have questions on how this works, please ask us for clarification.

We are working on a new Memverse live quiz feature with automatic scoring for use in the next few weeks.

Thanks Ben for running this quiz!

Comment guidelines: Please stay on topic as this helps everyone who scores your answers. Let's see how many people we can have participating with as few comments as possible. :) Thank you for your cooperation!

Please note: As Andy mentioned in the comments, please make sure you have 8 verses in your account (Learning or Memorized) so that your comments do not have to be approved.

Update: Thanks everyone for participating! We had a great quiz. Thank you to Ben for running the quiz, and to BibleBeeJunior11, Nina, Carissa, Bethany, and David Stelzl for all their help scoring. Below are the scores. (If you think we made a mistake while scoring you, please let us know and we will do our best to rectify the situation.)

Matthew Sinclair - 16 points
Audrey - 20 points
Elisabeth - 20 points
Andrew - 28 points
Simeon - 44 points
Jamie - 56 points
David Stelzl - 56 points
BibleBeeJunior11 - 76 points
Rachel - 82 points
Zachary McMahan - 94 points
Rachel Crosswhite - 95 points
Nina - 96 points
Sarah Stelzl - 105 points

Bethany - 124 points
Grace Mieczkowski - 131 points
Alex Watt - 132 points
SavedByGrace - 141 points
Christian Alexander - 168 points

Congratulations everyone! We hope you enjoyed the quiz. May God bless each of you as you hide His Word in your hearts through the Bible Bee - something far more important than your score in the quiz. We'll let you know soon about future quizzes. Thanks.

What week(s) will the majority of this quiz's questions come from, if you don't mind my asking (just for the sake of knowing what to review over the next three hours)?

Really want to do this! But I am not sure how well I will do, because we got our stuff two weeks late..... So i am not yet on week 4 for verses :) (I don't normally do the verses in order, they confuse me when I am learning them like you'll have a whole bunch of Exodus and then you just get confused. If you know what I mean)
But i will try to be there! If not.... Good luck you guys!

@Zachary Baas (Version: NKJV) - Yes, that is fine to put your bible version in your name. It serves the purpose of indicating your version for the scorers.

Grace Mieczkowski, you might just want to put your version in there anyway to make it easier to score.

Welcome to the live Memverse Bible Bee quiz for Week 4 (with three questions relating to the previous weeks).

I will begin by posting the text of a passage in all five Bible Bee versions, for which you identify the reference. Please post the reference in a comment and indicate which question you are answering. For example, post “Q #1 – Genesis 1:1.”

The quiz will begin in one minute. There will be about three minutes between each reference question. Thank you!

P.S. – Please ask any questions you may have now.

KJV: Ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me. I, even I, am the LORD; and beside me there is no saviour.

Question 2
ESV: As he came near to the den where Daniel was, he cried out in a tone of anguish. The king declared to Daniel, "O Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to deliver you from the lions?" Then Daniel said to the king, "O king, live forever! My God sent his angel and shut the lions’ mouths, and they have not harmed me, because I was found blameless before him; and also before you, O king, I have done no harm."

KJV: And when he came to the den, he cried with a lamentable voice unto Daniel: and the king spake and said to Daniel, O Daniel, servant of the living God, is thy God, whom thou servest continually, able to deliver thee from the lions? Then said Daniel unto the king, O king, live for ever. My God hath sent his angel, and hath shut the lions' mouths, that they have not hurt me: forasmuch as before him innocency was found in me; and also before thee, O king, have I done no hurt.
NASB: When he had come near the den to Daniel, he cried out with a troubled voice. The king spoke and said to Daniel, “Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you constantly serve, been able to deliver you from the lions?” Then Daniel spoke to the king, “O king, live forever! My God sent His angel and shut the lions’ mouths and they have not harmed me, inasmuch as I was found innocent before Him; and also toward you, O king, I have committed no crime.”

NKJV: And when he came to the den, he cried out with a lamenting voice to Daniel. The king spoke, saying to Daniel, “Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to deliver you from the lions?” Then Daniel said to the king, “O king, live forever! My God sent His angel and shut the lions’ mouths, so that they have not hurt me, because I was found innocent before Him; and also, O king, I have done no wrong before you.”
NIV: When he came near the den, he called to Daniel in an anguished voice, “Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to rescue you from the lions?” Daniel answered, “O king, live forever! My God sent his angel, and he shut the mouths of the lions. They have not hurt me, because I was found innocent in his sight. Nor have I ever done any wrong before you, O king.”

We will now begin recitations. I will post a reference, and you respond by typing the reference, the text of the passage (according to your memory), the reference again, and the Bible version you used in your recitation. BTW, it is helpful to those scoring to post “Pass” for a passage you cannot or do not wish to “recite.” But please also be sure to indicate which question you are passing on (e.g. Q #6 – Pass).
There will be about four or five minutes between the “recitation” questions. We will begin them now. Thank you!

NASB: Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth Does not become weary or tired. His understanding is inscrutable. He gives strength to the weary, And to him who lacks might He increases power.

NKJV: Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the LORD, The Creator of the ends of the earth, Neither faints nor is weary. His understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the weak, And to those who have no might He increases strength.

NIV: Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.

Question 11 (sorry! I accidentally skipped over this!)
ESV: Then Nebuchadnezzar came near to the door of the burning fiery furnace; he declared, "Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, servants of the Most High God, come out, and come here!" Then Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego came out from the fire. And the satraps, the prefects, the governors, and the king’s counselors gathered together and saw that the fire had not had any power over the bodies of those men. The hair of their heads was not singed, their cloaks were not harmed, and no smell of fire had come upon them. Nebuchadnezzar answered and said, "Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who has sent his angel and delivered his servants, who trusted in him, and set aside the king’s command, and yielded up their bodies rather than serve and worship any god except their own God.
KJV: Then Nebuchadnezzar came near to the mouth of the burning fiery furnace, and spake, and said, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, ye servants of the most high God, come forth, and come hither. Then Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, came forth of the midst of the fire. And the princes, governors, and captains, and the king's counsellors, being gathered together, saw these men, upon whose bodies the fire had no power, nor was an hair of their head singed, neither were their coats changed, nor the smell of fire had passed on them. Then Nebuchadnezzar spake, and said, Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who hath sent his angel, and delivered his servants that trusted in him, and have changed the king's word, and yielded their bodies, that they might not serve nor worship any god, except their own God.
NASB: Then Nebuchadnezzar came near to the door of the furnace of blazing fire; he responded and said, “Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-nego, come out, you servants of the Most High God, and come here!” Then Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-nego came out of the midst of the fire. The satraps, the prefects, the governors and the king’s high officials gathered around and saw in regard to these men that the fire had no effect on the bodies of these men nor was the hair of their head singed, nor were their trousers damaged, nor had the smell of fire even come upon them. Nebuchadnezzar responded and said, “Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-nego, who has sent His angel and delivered His servants who put their trust in Him, violating the king’s command, and yielded up their bodies so as not to serve or worship any god except their own God.
NKJV: Then Nebuchadnezzar went near the mouth of the burning fiery furnace and spoke, saying, “Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego, servants of the Most High God, come out, and come here.” Then Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego came from the midst of the fire. And the satraps, administrators, governors, and the king’s counselors gathered together, and they saw these men on whose bodies the fire had no power; the hair of their head was not singed nor were their garments affected, and the smell of fire was not on them. Nebuchadnezzar spoke, saying, “Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego, who sent His Angel and delivered His servants who trusted in Him, and they have frustrated the king’s word, and yielded their bodies, that they should not serve nor worship any god except their own God!
NIV: Nebuchadnezzar then approached the opening of the blazing furnace and shouted, “Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, servants of the Most High God, come out! Come here!” So Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego came out of the fire, and the satraps, prefects, governors and royal advisers crowded around them. They saw that the fire had not harmed their bodies, nor was a hair of their heads singed; their robes were not scorched, and there was no smell of fire on them. Then Nebuchadnezzar said, “Praise be to the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, who has sent his angel and rescued his servants! They trusted in him and defied the king’s command and were willing to give up their lives rather than serve or worship any god except their own God.

Question 14
ESV: The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD hasanointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; to grant to those who mourn in Zion—to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit; that they may be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he may be glorified.
KJV: The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.
NASB: The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, Because the LORD has anointed me To bring good news to the afflicted; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to captives And freedom to prisoners; To proclaim the favorable year of the LORD And the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn, To grant those who mourn in Zion, Giving them a garland instead of ashes, The oil of gladness instead of mourning, The mantle of praise instead of a spirit of fainting. So they will be called oaks of righteousness, The planting of the LORD, that He may be glorified.

NKJV: “The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon Me, Because the LORD has anointed Me To preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives, And the opening of the prison to those who are bound; To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, And the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn, To console those who mourn in Zion, To give them beauty for ashes, The oil of joy for mourning, The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; That they may be called trees of righteousness, The planting of the LORD, that He may be glorified.”

NIV: The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion—to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the LORD for the display of his splendor.

Thanks everyone for participating and thanks Ben for hosting! It was a great quiz.

If you are able to stay around for a while, let us know and you can help score the recitations. For details on how to score, please see the information and example in this blog post. The recitations are questions 6 - 10. Ben is scoring all the other questions.

We'd really appreciate your help. Thank you to those of you who have already expressed your willingness to help with this. It can get overwhelming filtering through all the comments to score. :) We also understand that some of you have other commitments. Thanks for considering! We hope to update the blog post with scores later this evening.

Grace - That's fine. We can ask you to score some people and you can do that anytime this evening. Thank you.

Great job everybody!! Is anybody here from Mississippi or Louisiana?

SavedByGrace

Sorry, no, Matthew Sinclair. I'm from Ohio and probably will be for quite a while. :) Why do you ask about Louisiana?

Also, if you want to see if anyone else on Memverse is from either of those states, brush over the "Leaderboards" tab and click on "State Leaderboard." Then you can see if Louisiana or Mississippi is included there. Click on a state to see the people from Memverse that are in it.

One more thing. We all need to remember that adding extra comments can slow the Memverse system down, as Andy has said, so we should try to stay on topic. It's fun to chat, but here is probably not the best place to do it. :) Thank you!

WHAT IS GOING ON?!?!?!?!?!
Every time I add something into a comment it doesn't show it until I write another comment!!!! In the first comment I only wrote the first paragraph. When I tried to add the last two, it didn't seem like it had put it on the comment, so in the second comment I wrote that I had tried to add the last two paragraphs but it wouldn't let me. Then I proceeded to write the last two paragraphs. But when I had done this, I saw that it HAD added the last two paragraphs, so I tried to go back and delete the comment. It didn't seem to let me do that, either. So I wrote that last comment as an apology for writing the same thing twice, then I saw that the second comment HAD been deleted. So now I'm writing this comment as an apology for the confusion. Sorry!

@SBG A few days ago you asked about the people on memverse and what they wee doing and so on..... so here's my answer: My name is Rachel Ledford and I'm 10 years old in Primary. (Why I asked, Bethany) I just finished 5th grade and am homeschooled. It was exciting to see all these homeschoolers in the Bible Bee! My birthday is on November 17th.... extremely close to the date for how old you will be to see what catergory your in! I was nearly in Junior but just missed the deadline. : ) My younger sister is also in the Bible Bee doing Timothy Track and is 8. My older sister would be in Junior (at 13) but is not doing the Bible Bee. My younger sister does not use memverse and this is both of our's 1st year participating. I met President Bush (while he was still president) and his wife at 7. I am very good at spelling. My dad is a pastor at Westminister Church PCA. I'm very excited about the Bible Bee. I live in Butler, PA. I hope to meet some of you some day. Is anybody else around my area? Thanks!!!!!!!!!

@Alex:

I think we are in Cental time...but I'm not sure. So, I would start the quiz at 3 PM my time, to be the right time for you all? Is that right?

Oh, I didn't know that *blushes* I wasn't sure, because one time I came in late...and I thought I had calculated that I was 30 minutes late. I guess I was a little off. Thanks for telling me, so that I can know next time :)

Ok, so, yes, you would start the quiz at 3PM EDT. With me, I posted about 5 minutes before hand saying that we would start in 5 minutes, but then I waited about another 5 minutes to make sure everyone who wanted to participate was there. Just a suggestion. :)

@Sarah: Ok, thanks for the suggestion!

@Alex: Please let me know what date I get...so I can chose verses. Also, do I chose from the week that we're on, or just any week?

@Ashley The Sword Study is pretty cool, but some things I can't answer. Like: Where do you feel different because you believe in God? My Answer: Nowhere. I guess for most people they would feel strange, like in school, but I just don't feel strange anywhere.

@Rachel--I kind of feel the same way. You're right when you say that some people might get teased for being a Christian at school or something, but I've never really encountered persecution any worse than a face from an unbeliever that says, "You're a Christian? So much for this friendship..."

Well, my Dad's a pastor so I'm always helping with tons of things and not usually at many places. But swim team would be my best answer for where I feel uncomfortable. I actually have a meet tonight at five.

Good luck, Rachel! Nah, just kidding. There's no such thing as luck--just providence. I'll pray that God will be with you! And see if any of them are willing to hear about your faith, if you are able to find a time to talk with them.

Alex, if Bethany can plan on doing the 22nd, that would probably work best. Our planning for that week has been a bit topsy-turvy, so I will most likely be able to participate in the quiz, but I'm not 100% sure of where I'll be as far as my internet connection, so I feel like I shouldn't commit to running the quiz. Thanks for understanding, and let me know which of the other weeks I could help : )

Ashley, it is amazing! God is really showing me things through it! Tell your mom a special thank you from me. Did she write the whole thing, or just some? She really has a gift.

A real quick Q I have for you, Ashley: Since you're a contestant, did your mom have to keep the study a secret from you all school year? I thought that family could not participate. hmmmm....
