Recite Your Memory Verses

When we started Memverse we had always hoped that the day would eventually come when you no longer had to type in the memory verse but could simply recite it. That day is gradually coming closer with this feature in the next version of Google Chrome:
One of the new features is added support for the HTML5 speech input API. This means that you’ll be able to talk to your computer and Chrome can interpret it. Those who have become accustomed to doing this on Android and other mobile devices will love this. More importantly, it’s an HTML5 spec that any developer will be able to take advantage of, not just Google.
If you’re running Chrome 11, you can try it out here. It works very well. You speak, and the browser is able to transcribe what you say. No Flash, no plug-in. Yep. Awesome.
I think we're still a few years away but it will be exciting. Reciting your bible verses out loud is a great way to entrench them in your memory.

Nathan - Good question. Audio would not replace the text aspect unless microphones replace keyboards. :) At least, that's what I take. Also, the way Chrome is doing this is converting audio to text, so it still relies on the text input, and if it wrongly converted what you said, you could edit it with your keyboard. I'll want to try this out with Chrome, but it sounds pretty cool.
This sounds awesome! I'd love to be able to just recite verses and have the program be grading it for me!

I am confident that Microsoft, Mozilla, Apple, etc., will eventually add support for this feature, though they are a little behind google right now in terms of keeping up with new technology. As we've seen in the past, google likes to "show off" (in a good way) the stuff their team of web designers can come up with. After all, you can do pretty much anything you want if you own the largest website in existence.
Zachary, this is great. I am an ok typer, but I have memorized most of my verses while running, and not sitting at a computer, so being able to recite it will be better for me. I find hearing the logical thought patterns and voice inflections is so helpful. Sometimes even acting it out (albeit embarrassing) really helps me learn quicker.
Thanks for thinking up and working on this tool. I look forward to trying it out. I've got a Mac.

Heidi, from what I've tried, even using Google Chrome, this does not work on my Mac. Let me know if it works for you please! :D
UPDATE: Wait, my Chrome is 10.0.648.205 and it is saying that there are no updates. Hmmmmm....
UPDATE #2: Somehow it updated me, and it works now. So, do I have to copy and paste this into the memverse system?
Sarah - You can follow the link Andy posted at the top of this page to test it out while using Chrome 11. There is a little microphone icon you can click and it will transcribe as you speak. I'd be interested to know how it works for you.
I've tried it with a laptop's built-in microphone, and it worked OK, though it doesn't get things word perfect. Maybe it will be better if I try another microphone... I don't know that it is "good enough" yet, but it seems we can add an HTML attribute to the input box on the verse page to allow Chrome 11 users to try this with Memverse...
Sarah - so you were able to use it on Memverse? Or did you speak your KJV verses into the other link that Andy gave? Just curious. Thanks. :)
I did this today and got this ...it's "suppose" to be 1 John 4:10...which really says in the KJV...

So this is not yet functional on MemVerse, correct? (Meaning it is not a feature built in - still waiting for it?)
Chloe - Correct, not functional yet, but at last in the foreseeable future with technology advancing so rapidly. :) We don't have the details (mainly large tech companies like Google are driving these features, not Memverse), but it's exciting to know that progress is being made on this front.
This is great! Unfortunately, I have Mozilla Firefox, not Google Chrome.
I don't like to type so I have been using windows speech recognition bundled with Windows 8. This has worked well for me with a few exceptions. I'm currently memorizing Isaiah 40 using the new King James version. No matter how many times I've tried to get it corrected it in windows speech recognition, the software never gets the word "crooked" right in verse four. It usually spells it as "croaked". Overall though, I find it to be much better than typing. I'm using Firefox 18.0.2
