Upgrade

Time Posted on February 23, 2011 User Andy

We will very shortly be upgrading the website to a more recent version of the framework software (Ruby on Rails 3.0). You probably won't notice much difference but it is a very big change that has required months of work. We're very close to being able to deploy the new version. Unfortunately, as happened this morning, there is a chance that as we test the new framework, the current site will come crashing down. We're hoping to minimize the outages as much as possible but if you see cryptic error messages and can't login, it's because we're stuck halfway down the upgrade path. Sometimes it's difficult at that point to know whether to try to revert back or keep pushing forward.

Update: our hosting company has decided to upgrade the entire server now so there is a small chance Memverse will disappear for a short while. Fear not, we'll be back.

Andy, thanks for your commitment to memverse and the many hours you have poured in to the benefit of all of us and the advancement of Scripture around the world. We support any changes you choose to make and will be patient with temporary scares of Memverse being down.

If there are problems with the site not working for several days could you email all the users and let them know? or would that be too much work?

Marie - I'm sure we'll "cross that bridge if we come to it" (as the saying goes). I certainly hope it won't be down that long. :) Andy also works to test changes on another part of the site to reduce problems here. Thanks!

Alex--out of curiosity how will the upgrade to Ruby on Rails 3 change things?

Josiah - Rails 3 will improve the features available to code with on the server side and improves the performance of the application. Andy has been the one working on the upgrade; I have been watching and learning. :) There are lots of articles online about Ruby on Rails, if you are interested in how it works. I still have a good bit to learn. :)

Also, when the upgrade is complete there will be a few feature improvements due to code we've been working on other than the upgrade.

EDIT: I will be emailing you soon, Josiah, in response to the question about articles. I'm glad you're interested! :)

If it isn't too much, Alex, what were some of the articles about Ruby on Rails that you found most helpful?

For now, everything seems to be stable. We're hoping to have the new version out by March 1st. If the upgrade process doesn't go smoothly we will roll back to the previous version and go and lick our wounds for a few days. Either way, the site won't be down for long. In any extended outage we will post updates on the Facebook site and on Twitter.

Guys, is there any way to put a hold on the timer when the site is down? If I miss my time one morning, that means I have double the verses the next day and while I'm a big girl and I can deal with it! :) it would be nice if there was a way to stop the timer for that day. hmm, I'm thinking we already dealt with this... regarding vacations and such....???

I really like Laurel's idea about the hold on the timer.

How long will MemVerse be gone? Will it effect Internet Explorer 8 as far as the view?

The upgrade is done and was 99% on the server side so you probably won't see many cosmetic differences.

We are going to work on a way to 'hit reset'. For those of us who just can't bear to log out before we've seen our progress graph ... :)
