Memory Passages Have Finally Arrived

Time Posted on January 27, 2013 User Andy

Well, sometimes things just take a little longer than one expects. In this case, about two years longer!

A feature that has been sorely lacking in Memverse is the ability to memorize verses in the context of their containing passage. After many months of experimentation, we have released an early version of this new feature: Passage Review

Since this involved a significant number of changes to the software, it is likely that there are still kinks to be ironed out. We recommend waiting a week or so before you jump in and start using it.

This sounds awesome! Unfortunately, I already did all my verses for today, but I look forward to trying it out tomorrow!

I just tried it, and it's even better than I thought it would be! It's much easier to remember a verse when you can see its full context. Thank you so much!! :) :)

It looks really great! It will be very helpful during BB.

Just a question - can you select which passages you would like to review, or will this option be available in the future? That would be really handy.

This is a most helpful review section. I will use it very often. The only things it seems to need still are keyboard shortcuts for rating the verses and the ability to get a "hint" if I get completely stuck. :) Thank you very much. I always memorize entire chapters, so this is perfect.

To get a hint you can press the down arrow on your keyboard and that will reveal the next word.

I have a question. Does doing the Passage Review for your memorization session count as a memorization session? Because ever since I started doing that, my amount of sessions completed in the past year has gone down...

A5add584fd0f556712d9e039c68fa698?d=wavatar
Andy

@SBG It should count as a session. I will check on that. For now, be sure to log out at the end.

Erika

What do you mean by log out at the end? I did a Passage review today and completed what was due today. Since Passage Review also gave me all my "Pending" verses, I did not complete those pending verses. I then clicked the normal "Review" and it showed my progress screen and said I had no more verses today. The number of completed sessions had gone down by one. I then went to My Verses, converted some verses from Pending to Learning, and went into regular Review to do them. After that, it showed my progress screen with the correct number of sessions completed (that is, one more than had been completed before).
All that to say, the Passage Review did not count towards a memorization session for me.

To log out, just click "Logout" at the top of the page. If you do this at the end of a Passage Review session, it should be saved as a memorization session. Before the feature is completely released, it will save sessions without users needing to log out.

Thank you. This looks great. It's so amazing to have all these extra features.

At some point in the future, will this lead on to being able to choose to review whole passages, as we are currently able to do with chapters? I find the chapter review really helpful, but it would be wonderful to do it in less time-consuming chunks, as well as to review longer passages that aren't complete chapters.

I am glad you guys are doing this I think it is one of the things Memverse will be improved by, and is something I have asked for before.
I had a thought which may or may not be workable with the current system, or may be somthing you are working on. I think it would be helpful if under the 'my verses' or ('your verses') tab there would be a way to link the verses together, so that just because verses were consecutive they would not mean they would necessarily be linked as a passege e.g. I like to review Psalm 119 in the 8 verse sections that it is divided into, as passages, and it would take a long time if I got the whole passage in one day, as I could do under chapter review.
Another aspect of this could also be the rating system where the verses being idividually rated would cause the passage to attain the mean (mathmatical average) rating of the verses in the passage, when one was done reviewing that passage. Meaning the verses would always end up rated the same as all others in the passage, and therefore be memorized or reviewed at the same time.

Andy

The next phase will allow for sub-passages and some type of synchronization. We're still trying to figure out the best way to implement it.

492e52bae26da556e7b55188331b6728?d=wavatar
Erika

Synchronization would be wonderful. Since I learn and review by chapter/passage (meaning I always want to review all the verses in the chapter on the same day), I always have to guess at my average recall of the whole passage in order to all the verses in the chapter with that number. It doesn't always work the best, but it lets me keep whole chapters together instead of reviewing individual verses each day from many random chapters. An automated synchronization process would make my rating system far more accurate; thank you.

@Cato: Currently we're hoping to eventually merge the verse/passage review in some way, although I'm not sure of the details yet.

Christiana, when you click on a verse it will say "new tag" in paratheses and if you click on that it should let you tag the verse and then when you've finished typing you press enter, and that's how you tag verses!

Jacen

How are upcoming passages determined?
Sometimes the passages are the same as some of my daily review, and other times they are not.
I like to do a mixture of reviewing, meaning I do some of the daily review, some accuracy tests, some reference testing, and then passage review. I try to do a little of each since the different approaches really help cement the scriptures in my mind.

A5add584fd0f556712d9e039c68fa698?d=wavatar
Andy

I'll have to check but the upcoming passages should be determined the same way as the daily review. If you have a lot of memory verses due for review on a given day, you might not see all of them on the old page.

Incidentally, the passage review page is intended to eventually replace the current daily review page.

Jacen

Will the current review page go completely away? I use Memverse during my breaks at work, and due to some type of filtering, I am not able to do the passage review page. It has something to do with the individual blocks and their pop-up hints, I think.

A5add584fd0f556712d9e039c68fa698?d=wavatar
Andy

Probably not for a long time, Jacen. We're aware that the passage review page requires a very modern browser.

Anna Mieczkowski

@Andy or whoever else may know - In this year's National Bible Bee, we have some long passages that cross through a chapter break. For example, just now I was reviewing Romans 4:13-5:8. The system views that as two different passages, Romans 4:13-25 and Romans 5:1-8. Is there any way to review that as just one passage?

Thanks for all the great work you all do - it really is worth it!

A5add584fd0f556712d9e039c68fa698?d=wavatar
Andy

@Anna, at the moment it isn't possible to have passages that cross chapter boundaries. To be honest, I don't think we will have that functionality for a long time.

I will keep it in mind, though.

Hi! I'm enjoying all the wonderful benefits of memverse, so thank you! Recently I discovered passage review and am using it sometimes. Today I noticed a mistake in Joshua 1:8 on the passage review. It says, "....so that may be you careful to do..." scrambling some of the words in NASB. It should say, "....so that you may be careful to do..." and it is recorded correctly when learning it and when using review. Thank you again for making this program available.

Denise - We're glad Memverse is helping you!

I checked on Joshua 1:8, NASB, and it looks like it is currently correct. There may have been a glitch with Passage Review. Please let us know if it happens again. You can use the "Feedback" tab on the right of any page and we'll take a look. (That tab is what we use for resolving technical issues, as well as receiving ideas from users.) Thanks!

Hi, I just tried to send you another comment on feedback but couldn't because it didn't recognize my email address. (I checked my profile and it was the email address I had used.)

I didn't see anyone else with the same problem, so this seems strange, but here is my comment from today: Hi! This is the second time I've had a problem with passage review in a couple of days. I just filled in the words on Psalm 146:7 (and it seemed as though everything was correct) but after I looked back up at it and read it, it was scrambled. I will copy and paste how the words now appear. Thanks, Denise
