The Evolution of Memverse
It’s been nearly two years now since I joined Memverse and I’m always amazed when I consider the many improvements that have taken place since I signed up in the spring of 2010. For starters, does anybody remember the old, tri-color layout that was replaced back in May? Our membership levels had recently dropped to around 550 active users - a number which immediately skyrocketed and nearly hit 1,000 in only a single month. We’ve since continued to achieve record numbers and are currently hovering somewhere around 1,500 users with more than 142,000 total verses memorized!
Of course many new features have also been implemented, a few of which include the ability to skip verses not necessarily due for review (>>), tag your verses, search the Bible, track your referrals, select a primary translation, mark verses as Pending, and reset your schedule. None of this was possible when I first signed up, meaning that, if Romans 12:2 was due for review, then so was Romans 12:3-21. Falling behind in your memorization was not easily fixed with the click of a button and the Group Leaderboard was nonexistent.
As I have often said, I truly believe Memverse to be the most powerful tool available to help you effectively and efficiently memorize Scripture. I believed that two years ago when five memory verses put you on the Leaderboard, and am even more convinced now than ever that you won’t find a better piece of technology out there to help you get the Word of God in your heart and keep it there. Although Memverse is easily worth a paid subscription, it has graciously been made available free of charge and, as a result, has helped plant the good seed of God’s Word in numerous hearts all across the world. It’s impact has been eternal in my life and is a blessing I thank God for.

I'm very glad I joined when I did. I love it, and I learn every day about new features that I never knew existed. :-) I joined in late 2011, so most of the changes mentioned above I take for granted. Thanks to all who work so hard to make such a great site...for free!
I joined Memverse in June 2011, so I never saw that old screen shown above. However, I have seen Memverse undergo many changes for the better, and now I can't imagine using something else (like my simple mind alone) to memorize. Thank you so much to all of you who make Memverse possible--and may it only continue to get better!
I know I feel like I have been on Memverse forever ! It is truly a great tool. Praise the Lord for the strides that we as Christians have been able to take through this program !
BTW Gods bondslave - are you in ATI? I saw your church was set to Journey. My family and I are in it. Btw great job on memorizing over 3000 verses!!!
Wow, I've been on this site for sixteen months! That doesn't sound like a long time for all those features Dakota mentioned to be implemented, but we have superb developers and it was done easily. Andy, Alex, Emeka, and newly-added-to-the-team Josiah are all doing a great job developing new features for Memverse. TY! It was only a few weeks after I joined that the "QuickMem" feature was added (now the standard Memorize). If it wasn't for that feature I probably wouldn't have been on Memverse right now.
Yes I remember that screen. I joined in 2010 (we had dial up then :) now memverse is so much faster when you have high speed internet)
Actually, I miss the old memverse. :(
I loved the cool graphics with the sword in the water rather then the new green and grey theme.
And the verses never 'lost each other' before we had quickmem.
Though the group leaderboard is so neat.
Also the pending verse feature is new and is so helpful as well as schedule reset. :)
I must have signed up after Dakota since I could track my referals but everything else I do remember being added while I was on. :)
It is amazing to think of all the changes memverse has gone through in such a short time.
To God alone be the glory!!!!
@JPIA our family is in ATI. I thank the Lord for that institution and what it has done for me. Though He works through everything for His good pleasure. It is great to be involved with His other servants. And Thanks without the Lord and Memverse though I'm pretty sure that it would have been impossible. :)
I've been on Memverse for 10 months...wow, time sure flies! Today, I completed my 200th memorization session too =) Oh, yes, I remember that old look, and I remember the day when the new look came out...my family and I were really impressed!
Thanks for all the changes you've done Andy, Alex, Emeka and Josiah (congratulations on joining the team!); I appreciate all your work that you do on here, and am very thankful for this site! It sure helped me during the "Bee season" and even after Nationals, it's continued to be a wonderful help to me! Thank you!
I joined about the same time as Bethany P (actually, only three days after her!). I love all the changes to memverse! I'd have to say that my favorites are the 'group leaderboard' and new 'add verse' (I don't remember a time before the 'reset scheduled' and 'pending' verses or else those would be my favorite. :D) Thank you so much, Memverse Team, for all these wonderful changes! This sight has sure been a blessing!
I also miss the Swords on the side but it did make everything a lot slower. We're busy working on the badges for the next release. Maybe we can have an 'Old Timer' badge with the sword :)
Ah yes... I had forgotten about the sword pic on the blog...
Although I haven't forgotten having to do Romans 12:3-21 if only Romans 12:6 was do :P Memorization sessions took so long... and that was when I still had less than 500 verses!
I guess I missed the third birthday of Memverse at the beginning of this month... Looking forward to another year of memverse!
Memverse has made a huge difference in tracking my memory verses and keeping me accountable. I appreciate all the work of the designers. Thanks guys! This site is truly a blessing- especially as it is free!
As I see this blog, I began to remember those days when God's grace led me here on Memverse in 2010. I shared this with my grand parents dear to me.
Though I still have to pick up to regularly do my memorizing without fail, I thank God that he made it possible for me to memorize 1 John and 1 Peter(recently - but it still needs review, review :) here on Memverse.
Yes I miss the old Memverse too. The precision of Capital letters while memorizing, a little bolder letters, the graphics on the home page and the blue colour.
Praise be to God who has shown His grace in enabling His children to make Memverse better with all its improvements. Thank you.
Congratulations Memverse on entering its fourth year.
I haven't even been on a year, but by comparing the picture shown above and the way the site is now, the improvement is impressive and amazing. Thanks for all your hard work!
This site has truly been a blessing to myself and many others, I'm sure! God has blessed the work of each of the creators and many volunteers hands. God is so good, isn't He?!
I'm trying to research the pros and cons of some of the most famous Bible translations. ex. NIV, ESV, NASB, KJV, NKJV etc. Is there anywhere I could go that could explain this in detail ?
Wow! I never knew it looked like that before! I joined in 2011 and I'm not sure if I would have stayed if it was like it used to be before I joined. Thanks Memverse team for all the work!
Does anybody know what the King James Only group is?
I joined almost a year ago and I really like the changes you have made. It is so much eaiser to use. I really like Memverse. Thanks soooooooo much for putting so much time into it. The new Bible Bee quizzes are much better then the old ones. Thanks for making Memverse!!!!!!! =)
@Matthew Sinclair - Start off checking for missing verses. One example is Acts 8:37. Some versions (I believe the NIV does) take out that verse. They go from Acts 8:36 to Acts 8:38.
Wow - that picture you showed up there is WAY old! Older than the time I've been on here! I love the changes that have evolved over several million...I mean, few years
@ follower of God - There are 2 ways to have someone show up as you referred them:
1. Give them the link found under your referrals (Account>Referrals) and have them sign up under it.
2. Have them set you as their referrer under Account>Referrals
@God's Bondslave: Kevin DeYoung wrote a short book comparing the ESV mostly with NIV, though somewhat to the other versions here: http://books.google.com/books?id=s72dwUT8vxkC&pg=PA9&lpg=PA9&dq=why+my+church+esv&source=bl&ots=s4sE_VsCg1&sig=9tqf_vbTTSyH7scttEflz0kcSGw&hl=en&sa=X&ei=RZp1T43DC4es8QSn27GTBA&ved=0CD8Q6AEwAzgK#v=onepage&q=why%20my%20church%20esv&f=false
I would post places where other versions are adequately discussed, but I don't know of any others. :P I will say though that the ESV is a very good version in both being literal and easy to understand. (I still use KJV, but...)
@God's Bondslave Good for you for searching this issue out! Since many of the 'bibles' contradict each other, it is very important to know which one is telling the truth. G.A.Riplinger has written an incredible, thorough book on the different versions. She compares them as well as looking at who translated them, what texts they were taken from and lots more. Here is a link to the book: https://shop.avpublications.com/product_info.php?products_id=77
One other quick site that shows the verses that are the easiest to memorize in the NIV (because they don't exist!) is: http://www.jesus-is-lord.com/nivdelet.htm
Keep seeking the truth!
@Zachary Baas - haha. I know, I don't like to use the word evolution because I automatically think of that!
@ Super401: Oh so there is a group that only memorizes the king james version or is it that they are memorizing those "missing" verses?
Exactly, BibleBeeJunior12! :)
@ follower of God: I am 12 and have been on Memverse since November 22, 2010.
@JPIA Rachel, ours is only about twenty minutes away! (It is at our church) I'm very blessed to have a Bee close to us. I can't wait to sign up!
Gods Bondslave ... That far?! are you doing it? What age category are you in? My first year as being a Senior :)
Rachel- Unless one starts closer to us, the one we are going to is an hour away. It seems like quite a few people will have to travel far to get to their local Bible Bee.
Emily Hamilton- That is a true blessing! I can't wait to sign up either!
Rachel - 227 miles, unless, like Rosie said, one starts closer to us. Yay! Less than 24 hours before regestration opens!
EDIT: Oops, wrong account again. :P :D
@JPIA: our locals is about 10 miles away.
@followerofgod: I am 13 years young :) I have been on memverse for about a year.
1 more day!!!! :)
@JPIA - ours is 48 miles away. Thankfully, my best friend is going to the same one...last year she went to a different one.
@FollowerofGod - I am 12 1/2. I think I've been on MemVerse for a year.
No, it's not just you. I couldn't register either. Maybe they haven't updated the website yet because it's Sunday?
Regarding Bible Bee registration: It should be open; our family just registered this evening. For those of you having trouble, please try this link: http://www.biblebee.org/_familyreg/enrollmap.php.
Wow! It's amazing all the changes Memverse has undergone! I joined two years ago in June when we pretty much none of the updates that we currently have... I distinctly remember getting behind in memorizing and having to do one hundred and three verses in one day. Thank you to everyone who works to make Memverse up to date and working!
follower of God- I am 12 years old. I joined Memverse on October 17, 2011. :) I am in Junior and our closest bee is an hour away. Wow! 15 minutes is really close! That must be really nice! :) My mom, my grandma, my grandpa, my brother and my aunt all have their birthday in April!
Emily Hamilton- I'm registered too!!
We've registered!...about 9 hours ago! :) I'm so excited - my BFF is going to the same one, I'm pretty sure! I can't wait for Bible Bee. Ours is going to be about an hour away as well,God's Madien of Virtue. Good night, ALL...well, for those of you who are awake at 10:07 EST. :)
God's Bondslave - are you really travelling 5 1/2 hours away? That's so far. You'd have to wake up around 2 or so!
Hooray I am signed up for BB!!!!!!! There is already 450 contestants signed up and it is only the 2 day!!
My Mom is signing me up for the Bible Bee today!!!! So excited!!! I've participated in all three and went to Nationals in 2009 for the very first!! Ours is an hour and a half away, I think.
Congratulations to Josiah DeGraaf for memorizing his 2000th verse! Good job and keep up the good work!
Yes, congratulations on memorizing your 2,000th verse, Josiah!
BBJ12- Well, actually, I was up until 10:30 P.M. (EST) finishing up schoolwork!! Why were you up at 10:07 P.M. (If I may ask)?
@GraceandGlory - me too!!!!! By the way, wondering about your username, have you read Hinds' Feet on High Places? Just wondering.
@GMOV - I had orchestra rehersal until 8:30, it takes us about 30 minutes to get home and we usually never get to bed before 10...not that I'm saying that never happens.
Great job Josiah!
@God's Bondslave -- I noticed that you are about to reach 4000 memorized verses...good job! I have a question for you though...how do you keep everything reviewed? Do you just use Memverse, or do you also practice them off-line? I am memorizing, and finding it very hard to keep everything reviewed...and I haven't memorized near as much as you! How much time do you use on Bible memory each day/week? I'd really enjoy hearing! Thanks.
BBJ12, I have not read Hinds' Feet on High Places, but I played Much Afraid in a play that my drama group of it, so that's where my name came from. I also have read Mountains of Spices, the sequel, it was really good.
@Bethany Thank you, for the question it really in some ways convicted me you see I used to spend every spare minute that I had reading or memorizing the Bible. While that probably isn't the right thing to do :) recently I haven't been doing very much. I would say that I spend at least an hour off-line reviewing. Another thing I do is I have a very hard time remembering references so I add most of my verses in chapters or long segments. I also work extra hard on verses that I want to really keep in memory and verses that I have just added. I am constantly in the state of losing verses and then rememorizing them. Hope this helps.
@God's Bondslave -- Thanks for answering my question! I do have another one for you -- how long have you done Bible memory? Was it since you started on Memverse, or had you done it long before that? Also, about how many verses do you have to review on Memverse each day? During the "bee season", I had up to 200 somes days and thought that was a lot...
Thanks for sharing with me about Bible memory!
@GraceandGlory - That's awesome! When I was about 7, my grandma started reading it to me but we never finished. This past Christmas, I got the book from her and finished it. I did not know there was a sequel. I will look it up at the Library. Do they have it?
@God's Maiden of Virtue - where do you live? I live in GA. Do any other meversers live in GA, or am I the only one? (BTW, Palamino doesn't count. She's my sister.)
BBJ12- I live in OH. :) That would make more sense. What instrument do you play? I am learning to play the piano. Infact, at the end of this month, my seven year old brother and I will be doing a piano recital with some other kids from church.
@Bethany I've been memorizing Bible verses for as long as I can remember. I know I memorized the Sermon on the Mount when I was seven. However, Memverse had definitely raised the number of verses that I can retain. And I usually do about 75 to 100 verses per day. It's really not that bad.
@God's Bondslave -- That's great! I started on James when I was about 9 or 10, but only got through chapter 2. A couple months before the Bible Bee started, I started memorizing more than I ever had...at 3-5 verses a week (my, was it a big change when I had to do 13-15 a day!)! I memorized Matthew 5 and 7, Ephesians 6:10-18 and Luke 12:24-36. When we started the Bible Bee, I stopped reviewing them altogther though, because we decided to switch from KJV to ESV...
Keep up the good work! It's inspiring to see how much you've memorized :)
@Bethany and God's Bondslave, you guys are both amazing at memorizing scripture. I started back when I was six and won second place in a JBQ (Junior Bible Quiz) competition when I was seven. Since then I also have participated in all three Bible bees and I'm going to in this upcoming one as well.
Keep up the great memorizing work!
@BBJ12, No, you are not the only Memverse user in GA. I live in the extreme northern part of the state. So that makes at least three (because, yes, your sister does count). :)
@Grace and Glory Where did you get the script for the Hinds Feet Play? Our family has wanted to put that on as a play but cannot find a script anywhere for it. Did your family write the script?
@Marie, our drama director's daughter/assistant wrote the play. It was a fun play. If you want to see it, give me some sort of contact information and I can try to send you a copy.
@Darcy Joy - :) Ok, I guess I'll give in. :) I met you in 2010 at Locals - you won 3rd place right? I won 2nd in the Primarys.
@God's Madien of Virtue - you play piano? Neat! I do too. My brother and I also have a piano recital coming up, but mine's at the end of May.
Wow, moving to Israel? I assume you won't be going there for lessons! :D That's too bad. Do you know of any other teachers in your area? How many years have you (Rachel and GMoV) been playing?
@grace and glory if you click on my name in one of my blog comments you will go to my dashboard which has my email on it. YOu can send it to me there.
Thanks!
I have been playing ever since I was 6 (almost 9 years) !!!!! Im glad you're doing the BB ... You will love it :)
9 years?!? That's great! I've been taking lessons for about 7 years now. I really enjoy it. I get to play for church sometimes, and I may be playing "full-time" this summer because the pastor and his wife (she usually does the playing) will be moving to California. :(
Rachel and CBH (BM)- Actually, I only began playing piano in September, 2011. My brother and I started with the Primer level. And now, I'm only 3 units away from reaching level 2 (Each level has 10 units).
@ChosenByHim, GMOV, and Rachel - I play too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i love the piano. Does anyone play violin? I've been playing violin for about 5 years, piano for about 7 1/2 years and accordion for about 6 months. Does any one play accordion?
GMoV - Well, a little piano is better than none! But it does sound like you've been making good progress. I hope you enjoy it and keep it up.
BBJ12 - I don't play violin, but I REALLY want to start taking violin lessons soon. Maybe I can teach myself, with a little help from my very busy cousin who plays. I don't play accordion either, but my grandma used to play.
BBJ12: I play violin! And piano too. I think (I'm not too sure, I kinda forgot how old I was when I started) I've played violin for about 5 years. I've played piano for.... a long time. :)
GMOV: How do you like piano? Congratulations on almost reaching level 2! :)
CBH(BM): That's sad your pastor is moving away!
BBJ12- Wow! So many of us play piano! But, it is a very common instrument. What kind of songs do you play? I like playing hymns, country/folk songs (we are playing folk songs for the recital) and just regular, fun songs. I even taught myself how to play a little bit of the song Fur Elise. It is a pretty well known song. Have you heard of it?
I do not play the violin or accordion. :)
CBH- Yeah, I'm hoping to start at level 3 by the end of the year. It is going to take a little longer in level 2 because there is a level 2a and a level 2b. And I don't know how long they are. So I guess we'll see...
Emily Hamilton- I like piano a lot! I'm so glad I started taking lessons. Thank you! I can't wait to be moving on to new things.
Do any of you have videos on youtube? I have one: Classical Christmas Medley. Check it out! :) The title is 08 - Classical Christmas Medley. It was from last year.
I am a piano player as well. But I will cut it short there and ask: Can we please move this conversation to the chat blog? Thanks!
BBJ12- This chat blog- http://www.memverse.com/blog/main/God_honoring_friendship_chat
Matthew Minica- Sorry! I wasn't thinking about that!
Going back a few comments... ;)
Ah yes, the beige... I certainly don't miss that. God sure has blessed Memverse!!!
It looks like a scene from Prince Caspian--and if not, it's definitely Narnia. One thing you need to know about BBJ12 is that she is crazy about Narnia. :D
I remember that screen! It was updated a few months after I joined :)
Thanks for this post Dakota!
