This is place for us to share music or lyrics of songs we have written! And I'm also looking for tips for music writing. So discuss!

I think I'm going to like this topic. :) Here's the lyrics to a song I wrote when I was 13:

Maybe one day I'll write songs…I can write the words, just not the music yet. I guess I need to get better at chords?

I know what you mean; I've written a couple of songs on the piano, but I haven't written it on paper. I find it really hard to write songs though….

Well, Danielle, I'm sure that if you looked it up online about piano chords, you could learn a lot. I'd explain it, but it would take a lot of time, which I don't have right now.

So, to all song writers…how do you come up with a tune that works? Does it take a lot of time? I think that's my biggest hold-back on writing songs.

I'm not very good at any of this but I think it takes a lot of knowledge and time….

I have been writing songs for about 6 months now. I just don't have any music for them, only the words. So I was wondering if maybe you guys could tell me what I could change, what flows and what doesn't. Thanks!

You guys all have the opposite problem that I have. I can come up with music (if I absolutely have to) but I can never come up with words, or even a name for the song/piece.

Yes they do.

I can come up with 10 second songs, but that's all :) No matter how hard I try on composing music, or anything alone that line, I got only come up with 10 seconds worth of music…It almost drives me crazy!

This song was taken almost completely from Scripture. That's one of the things I like to do when writing songs.
By the way, this song does have a tune, composed by yours truly. :)

One question Matthew - Should I have used all "you's" or "ye's" and not switched back and forth? Though I haven't used KJV in so long that "ye" in some parts sounds different…

"Ye" is a plural second-person pronoun, while "you" is singular. Kind of like "vosotros" and "tu" in Spanish. Both of the instances where "ye" is used in this song (beginning of verse 1) it is referring to "all ye". I think it is fine.

I wrote this song during the 2011 Bible Bee. I was inspired to write a song about it by Acts 4:18-20, a passage I memorized that year. It is my personal favorite of my praise & worship songs.

Those are great, Matthew! So…what's the first step to song writing? Is it like writing a poem and then finding a tune, and embellishing it?

Sometimes it's like that… but sometimes not. That's the way I wrote "What Do I Need, Save My Jesus?". It's easier to write hymns that way than contemporary praise & worship songs. But actually, in the majority of the songs I have written, I wrote the tune before the words, or the words and the tune together. I especially like it when the words and the tune pop into my mind at just about exactly the same time, because then it seems like they go together better.

Matthew and Bethany - I love the song "The way the truth and the life"! I'd love to hear the tune for it!

Okay!!! I debated whether or not to post one of my songs on here… First, I read through a few of the ones I wrote three years ago. They were written terribly!!!

So, here's one that's a bit more recent. (Although it still needs a little bit of tweaking!) It may read more like prose because it's not a traditional song… I wrote as a sort of aria for my sister, so it's set up just a bit different should really record this @Eden!

Oh, and they stanzas aren't quite set up right here… it's built as an arrangement!

I'm still working on the title, but I'm thinking of, "Whom have I?"

Verse 1: I am always, always with you
And by your right hand, your grasp has held me
Your counsel guides me,
Your arms enfold me,
And afterwards, receive me into glory.
