'Most people don't expect you to understand what we're going to tell you in this book. And even if you understand, they don't expect you to care. And even if you care, they don't expect you to do anything about it. And even if you do something about it, they don't expect it to last.' ~Alex and Brett Harris in "Do Hard Things"

I'm not sure if anyone has put this one down yet:
“Republicans believe every day is the Fourth of July, but the democrats believe every day is April 15.”

And a few more:
“Without God, democracy will not and cannot long endure.”

“Some of you may remember that in my early days, I was sort of a bleeding heart liberal. Then I became a man and put away childish ways.”

“You can tell a lot about a fellow's character by the way he eats jelly beans.”

Here's a great one by a guy named Sam Ewing:

"Hard work spotlights the character of people: some turn up their sleeves, some turn up their noses, and some don't turn up at all."

There once was a poet from Rome
who lived by the writing of poems.
But try as he might
he never could quite
get the last line to rhyme with the rest of them.

Great quotes, AstronomerLeah! :) Now here is something like what Margaret Eddy posted:

There once was a man from Hong Kong
Whose poems were always too long.
When asked why this was,
He said, "It's because,
No matter how hard I try, the last line always seems to go on and on and on… :D

The Bible Bee!
They (meaning whoever is in charge) keep changing the number of verses. Every year they have changed the number of verses either at local or nation level or both. Are they trying to get a bunch of kids to memorize a few verses or a few kids to memorize a bunch of verses? A couple years ago it looked like the latter, but at the moment I'm inclined to think they are trying to do both. I don't mind if they are, just as long as they leave it that way and stop changing their mind. I know they have a vision for having kids memorize God's word, and I love that they have that vision, but the time has come for that vision to have a few more set details.

“I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept his claim to be God. That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic — on the level with the man who says he is a poached egg — or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God, but let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.”

Wow! Thanks for the quotes, Rosie. Those are really good! I really like quotes from John Bunyan! I've never heard of the other three men, though I have heard of the first quote before :) Thanks for sharing!

Since I always enjoy reading books/things by John Bunyan, here are a few more quotes by him:

"In prayer it is better to have a heart without words than words without a heart."

"He who runs from God in the morning will scarcely find Him the rest of the day"

"Pray often, for prayer is a shield to the soul, a sacrifice to God, and a scourge for Satan.”

The most pleased of the lot was the other lion who kept running about everywhere pretending to be very busy but really in order to say to everyone he met, "Did you hear what he said? Us Lions. That means him and me. Us Lions. That's what I like about Aslan. No side, no stand-off-ishness. Us Lions. That meant him and me." At least he went on saying this till Aslan had loaded him up with three dwarfs, one dryad, two rabbits, and a hedgehog. That steadied him a bit.”

I really like the quotes you shared, Bethany- especially the second one! That is something I will think about when I am struggling to getting up to have my time with the Lord each morning. :)

"Chip the glasses and crack the plates!
Blunt the knives and bend the forks!
That's what Bilbo Baggins hates–
Smash the bottles and burn the corks!

Cut the cloth and tread on the fat!
Pour the milk on the pantry floor!
Leave the bones on the bedroom mat!
Splash the wine on every door!

Dump the crocks in a boiling bowl;
Pound them up with a thumping pole;
And when you've finished, if any are whole,
Send them down the hall to roll!

That's what Bilbo Baggins hates!
So, carefully! carefully with the plates!"

Here's a rather silly, nonsensical song from "The Fellowship of the Ring":

"Hey! Come merry dol! derry dol! My darling!
Light goes the weather-wind and the feathered starling.
Down along under Hill, shining in the sunlight,
Waiting on the doorstep for the cold starlight,
There my pretty lady is, River-woman's daughter,
Slender as the willow-wand, clearer than the water.
Old Tom Bombadil water-lilies bringing
Comes hopping home again. Can you hear him singing?
Hey! Come merry dol! derry dol! and merry-o,
Goldberry, Goldberry, merry yellow berry-o!
Poor old Willow-man, you tuck your roots away!
Tom's in a hurry now. Evening will follow day.
Tom's going home again water-lilies bringing.
Hey! Come derry dol! Can you hear me singing?"

–Tom Bombadil

Yes it is Fili that says 'smash the bottles and burn the corks!'
U had a few wrong lines in there…

Blunt the knives and bend the forks!
Smash the bottles and burn the corks!
Chip the glasses and crack the plates!
That's what Bilbo Baggins hates

Cut the cloth and trail the fat!
Leave the bones on the bedroom mat!
Pour the milk on the pantry floor!

Splash the wine on every door!

Dump the crocks in a boiling bowl;
Pound them up with a thumping pole;
And when you've finished, if they are whole,
Send them down the hall to roll!

That's what Bilbo Baggins hates!

The Misty Mountains Song was the BEST!

Far over the misty mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns old
We must away ere break of day
To seek the pale enchanted gold.

The dwarves of yore made mighty spells,
While hammers fell like ringing bells
In places deep, where dark things sleep,
In hollow halls beneath the fells.

For ancient king and elvish lord
There many a gleaming golden hoard
They shaped and wrought, and light they caught
To hide in gems on hilt of sword.

On silver necklaces they strung
The flowering stars, on crowns they hung
The dragon-fire, in twisted wire
They meshed the light of moon and sun.

Far over the misty mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns old
We must away, ere break of day
To claim our long-forgotten gold.

Goblets they carved there for themselves
And harps of gold; where no man delves
There lay they long, and many a song
Was sung unheard by men or elves.

The pines were roaring on the height,
The winds were moaning in the night.
The fire was red, it flaming spread;
The trees like torches blazed with light.

The bells were ringing in the dale
And men looked up with faces pale;
The dragon’s ire more fierce than fire
Laid low their towers and houses frail.

The mountain smoked beneath the moon;
The dwarves they heard the tramp of doom.
They fled their hall to dying fall
Beneath his feet, beneath the moon.

Far over the misty mountains grim
To dungeons deep and caverns dim
We must away, ere break of day,
To win our harps and gold from him!
