Sewing, Knitting, Crocheting...

You know, you can order yarn online? I've done that before. :)

I like doing needlework as well.
Most times i knit socks, because it´s so fast done, and i enjoy to wear them.
when i was younger i crocheted more, because i thought it was easier. Today i think crocheting is easier for younger children (small hands), since you have only one needle to handle and the crocheted yarn stays firmer on it´s place. While knitted "fabric" is more strethchable so it might be harder to handle. but that is a big plus to knitted things like socks as well. For me continental knitting seems to be faster than crocheting, but i never competed both methods ;-) it´s a thing of being used to the technics.
Some opf you mentioned that they´d like to learn knitting. My advice is to ask somebody to show it to you or to learn it by video tutorials on the www. My favourite tutorial is in German, but i saw some nice ones in English as well. I prefer the continental style (which my mother tought me) but the basics how to start the first "row" you can see if you look up "Stitch 'N Bitch: Learn to Knit" on Youtube which teaches the english method.
sorry my vocabulary of needleworkword is very limited
Dani(elle)
:) that's awesome!
At the 'small hands' part Madi is glad that Jordan has left temperarly. :) ;) lolJK!! (I'm really sorry I couldn't resist!!! I'm sorry! Lol)

It was tricky to explain. but once my cousin wanted to learn knitting, she might have been four, maybe six or so (today she is 16, so i really don´t remember how old she was then). And i tried really to help her to knit, but she couldn´t hold the needles and do this fine motoric skills at once. We gave her a knitting spool and she did fine.
I guess Jordan is old enough to knit?
biblebee
Yes, Jordan could knit if he wanted to but. He's seventeen but I don't think he wants to :D
I asked my neighbor to teach me to knit and now I so enjoy doing it. I personally think it is so much easier to do then crocheting
Dani(elle)
Lol no he always liked to tease Madi that she had 'small hands' :) lol

I want to do a cross-stitching for my sisters wedding. I´ve got one year to do the project. And now I´m calculating how much i can get stiched in that time.
I haven´t cross-stiched before, can you tell me how long it takes to cross-stich about 1000 crosses? (i saw a nice alphabt-pattern where the A had 122 stiches)
Any ideas for a nice SHORT bible-vers?
2 Corinthians 5:17
Rejoice evermore?
Dani(elle)
"Jesus wept."
Lol :)

Rejoice in the lord always again I say rejoice?
Juliana
But the word of our Lord stands forever.
Isaiah 40:8 b
You could do all of the verse too, but that might be too long.
I knit every once in a while, but usually i end up putting down my project and not picking it up again. It takes so long to finish knitting a project!
I like to sew, too. Recently I started "refashioning" clothes - taking old, ugly, worn-out, too-big clothing and turning it into something completely different. I found out about it at refashionista.net. I've also made a doll quilt, a full-size quilt, and I'm working on another full quilt now. Both my grandmothers, my grandfather, and my mom like to sew. There was never really any way I could escape! :-)

I love handcrafting. Except sewing on a machine.
I like knitting, crocheting, embroidering, and I really want to learn tatting. Does anyone on here know how?
Dance4Him
Ummm… what is tatting?
Sarah
I'm not really sure, but there's a section on it in my Keepers book. You can read it if you want.
Christine Daaé (Dani the Older)
Another craft similar to crocheting, but it's more delicate, and you can do it with just your hands.
God's Maiden of Virtue
I used to think tatting would be fun. But, a year ago, a friend from OK and I were learning (or rather, trying to learn) how to do it, and it wasn't working out for us. And interestingly, the kit came with a little tool - we didn't just use our hands. Maybe there are different ways of doing it… I don't know, but I guess it was also hard because I'm just so used to crocheting.
Christine Daaé (Dani the Older)
Yes, you also can use a shuttle for tatting. I'm interested in learning it without, because I'm starting to become swamped in knitting needles and crochet hooks :) But I should probably finish several of my projects, first.
Sarah
Wow, that looks like fun! I've always liked crocheting, but my crocheted fabric always ends up in triangles, even when I follow patterns, so I don't do it much anymore. :-P
Christine Daaé (Dani the Older)
I crochet triangles on purpose…
God's Maiden of Virtue
That's the word - shuttle! I couldn't think of the word, for some reason.
Sarah
You know, maybe I should do that too! I used to know how to make crochet flowers, but I lost the instruction booklet. I'll have to find it sometime.
Christine Daaé (Dani the Older)
I find most of my patterns online now.
Sarah
That sounds like a really good idea. :-)
Christine Daaé (Dani the Older)
Again, I hesitated to say that, because I really don't like using the internet very much. (Evidenced by my being on here talking to you all)
Alright, I'm leaving. Nice talking to you girls!
Sarah
Bye Dani!
Christine Daaé (Dani the Older)
Help! I tore my skirt, and got it mended, but there's still an ugly spot. It's a plain blue skirt, and I was thinking embroidering something over it. Any ideas?
Sarah B.
I tore a quarter size hole in my skirt… I ended up making a star patch to sew over it, it turned out nicely. Um… may I ask where it tore? it makes all the difference in the world. :)
Christine Daaé (Dani the Older)
Down near the hem. It was a triangle-shaped tear, so I was thinking embroidering a horseshoe over it…
Sarah B.
Okay, that sounds like what mine was like. I'm no good at embroidering so I can't really give you much advice there. Hope it turns out for you! ;)
Christine Daaé (Dani the Older)
I'm just scared to ruin my skirt- it's my favorite ever, and I wear it with a lot of different things. I don't know if the horseshoe will go exactly!
Courtney M.
I usually use iron-on patches for things like that, but since you want something that looks nice, Dani, I don't know that I can help you there. :-) I do know how to crochet a flower that you could sew on it! :-)
Christine Daaé (Dani the Older)
I used an iron-on patch, but it still doesn't look nice, and it's my favorite skirt.
Courtney M.
I know how you feel… :-P If you do decide to embroider something on it, just practice first, so you don't absolutely ruin it. :-P :-)
Sarah B.
Okay, I got this embroidery kit from my great-grandmother and I am going to try to do it. I have never done embroidery before so if anyone has any tips for a beginner I would love to hear from you! :)
Abigail Rose
She gave me a knitting kit a few years ago that I still have not done!
Emily H
Ummm…let your string re-twist a lot or else it will get a ton of knots in it and be really frustrating. xP

Emmy
Hi everyone! I've been on Memverse for over 2 years, but just recently discovered these forums. I LOVE crocheting so I was thrilled to see this particular forum :D I should probably introduce myself to you all. My name is Emmy (duh ;) ) and I have 5 sibs. I'm also homeschooled (as are most of my siblings; one is college-age). Besides crocheting, and sometimes doing other crafts, I also love singing, [trying to] act, dancing, writing, reading, doing school, caring for our animals, playing piano, rip sticking, playing soccer, and at times, baking and drawing. Some other stuff too, but you get the idea!
The only people I know on Memverse are those in the church SWCA. Also, Steve Psalm 84:11 is my dad, and Jenna Faith is my little sis ;)
I've been crocheting for only about 2 years, but I absolutely adore it!! At the moment I'm working on 2 colorful blankets, a hat for my brother, and a tissue box cover (our family uses an enormous amount of tissues, BTW!).
Question for anyone: where do you buy yarn? I love deramores.com. It is based in the UK, but it's an awesome site with great service and lots of choices!
Courtney M.
OR…wait, are you using all six strands of floss or are you separating them?
Abigail Rose
Would a crochet scarf look weird like this: navy blue with bright orange stripes running longways up the scarf? The blue would be triple crochet and the orange would be single crochet. Should I use a different color instead of orange? A different stitch?
I need to know because I am making a scarf for a friend, I want it to be a surprise so I can't ask them what color or style they want. :p
Courtney M.
Well, do they like navy blue and orange? I think it would be fine - the yarns are the same thicknesses, right? Another thing to consider is whether you want the scarf for warmth or for 'fashion'. :P If it's just a 'look-good' scarf, triple crochet is fine, but you'll want to use a smaller stitch if it'll be used for warmth. You should also experiment and see if the different stitches/different yarns work well together. Using the same brand of yarn helps sometimes.

Mommy's Helper
Sublime Stiches, or Sublime Sewing, or something like that… has iron-on patterns for embroidery.
Would a flower go? Sublime whatever it is has lots of flower patterns to choose from.
Christine Daaé (Dani the Older)
No, a flower would not work very well. Thanks- I'll go check it out!
Mommy's Helper
OH! It's Sublime Stitching!

Welcome, Emmy! Great to have you on here!
Though I know how to crochet I don't do it much.
