God's Maiden of Virtue

Hello, Emmy - welcome to Memverse!! Or the Memverse forums I should say =)
My name is Rosie (Eryana is just my name for something we're doing on here).
I've been crocheting for over two years as well! And, love it! :D What kinds of stuff have you done before?
Blankets are fun! What type of pattern are you using, or are you making up your own?
I usually just buy my yarn at JoAnns - have you heard of/been to it?

Emmy

Hi Rosie! Nice to meet you :) That's neat! Well, I've crocheted decorations, hot pads, hats, coasters, bags, wrist warmers, handbands, scarves, and bunting. I even sold some of my work at a local cultural center and earned $80! I was really happy =D

One of my blankets is just granny squares (one color per square) and the other is a ripple blanket using the amazing "neat ripple pattern" from attic24.

Oh, yeah, I've been to JoAnn's a number of times, and also Michael's. In fact, I just picked up a ball of yarn at Michael's today ;)

Emily H

Wow! That's so great you earned $80 from selling you work!!!

I mostly get my yarn from JoAnn's as well. Do you have a favorite thing to make?

33caa731aa135531af9eb65eabf44803?s=128&d=mm

Emmy

Most definitely- blankets! It's so much fun to be working on a big project that you love for a long period of time.
But I also really enjoy making hot pads and decorations. What do you like to make?

D31c974fe43f1230dbcb183971bfbdec?s=128&d=mm

Emily H

I would love to make blankets sometime! I haven't been ambitious enough yet though. :P
I've done scarfs mostly…and potholders. I like doing both, but we have way more than enough of both now. xP I don't know very many stitches yet. :-/

33caa731aa135531af9eb65eabf44803?s=128&d=mm

Emmy

Okay, well blanket-making isn't for everyone. Have you tried making pillow covers? I haven't yet, but I can't wait to make some, as I have lots of ideas :)

7dd80386abb09077121e3035a6872af4?s=128&d=mm

God's Maiden of Virtue

How neat! It sounds like you've learned a lot about crocheting! :) Do you enjoy using patterns?
I've crocheted blankets, scarves, flower headbands, wash clothes, spit-up clothes, hats, and doilies. I would like to make some pot holders some time too; I know how, I just haven't gotten a chance to yet (or rather, time hasn't permitted :).

Who taught you how to crochet? Or did you teach yourself?

33caa731aa135531af9eb65eabf44803?s=128&d=mm

Emmy

Hi Courtney! Well, we have some of that kind of yarn, but I've never been as interested in doing doilies. I like using lots of different color, so working it white can get kind of boring for me ;) but I know there are some really pretty doilies and other lacy things out there! What do you like making?

33caa731aa135531af9eb65eabf44803?s=128&d=mm

Emmy

Yes, I like using patterns, but many are them are tutorials that include photos. But I can follow written patterns too. I also like just making simple designs using granny squares or simple stitches.

Haha! You made me laugh about the "spit-up" cloths part! =D My little brothers are older now. But I remember the days when we were constantly folding burp rags ;)

Yeah, I know how it is with time- there's never enough of it, is there?

Um, well, I think I learned the basics from some friends (or my sister's friends), but when I really got into it, I started watching YouTube videos and stuff, so that's how I got more proficient. I consider myself intermediate :) How did you learn?

33caa731aa135531af9eb65eabf44803?s=128&d=mm

Emmy

Mmhmm! My sister and I have both made many ruffle scarves using the yarn :D we made them for ourselves and our friends. Everyone gives us lots of compliments- apparently they're very fashionable!

Do you like to use "fashion" yarns?

7dd80386abb09077121e3035a6872af4?s=128&d=mm

God's Maiden of Virtue

Okay. I wish I could say the same =) I despise patterns!!! I used one once back when I learned the basic granny square - I only got through one-fourth of the pattern before I was so frustrated with all of the abbreviations and symbols, that I just taught myself how to do the rest! LOL What is really nice is that if I study something crocheted, or a pattern or stitch for a while, I can teach myself how to do it - so virtually, everything I know how to make I taught myself how to do. ;-)

LOL I guess it is rather funny - but yeah, we still have little ones. I prefer to sew spit-up clothes better though. :)

I learned the basics from a close friend - the chain, single crochet, and double crochet. She also showed me one type of shell pattern. Then, I just branched off from there, teaching myself how to make the things I now do. And since I teach myself, I've made my own patterns for things sometimes (which is very fun to do!). Do you create your own patterns sometimes?
How many different kinds of stitches do you know?
Hmm…I think I'm probably an intermediate…I'm not sure.

33caa731aa135531af9eb65eabf44803?s=128&d=mm

Emmy

Well, I sorta make my own patterns. But nothing really fancy.

I know all the regular stitches- like chain, single crochet, double crochet, half double crochet, triple crochet, etc. Also i an increase and decrease. Then I can do other stitch combinations like Iike picots, shell stitches, granny square mosaic, star stitch, etc. I just learn whatever I need to learn for the particular project ;)

What's you favorite yarn brand?

7dd80386abb09077121e3035a6872af4?s=128&d=mm

God's Maiden of Virtue

I know all of the regular stitches too - chain, slip stitch, single, double, half double, triple, double triple, etc. etc. =)
What does it mean to increase and decrease? I've heard of it, but have never really tried to figure it out. :}

A neat thing I learned to do with single and double crochet stitches are single crochet and double crochet two stitches together, as well as reverse single crochet. Have you heard of/done any of these? They're fun, though when I first learned them, I thought they were rather tricky. xD

Some stitch combinations I can do are, working through the back loop, front post double crochet, shell patterns (a variety of kinds), the popcorn stitch, the bullion, and picots. The bullion is always hard for me - pulling ten loops through is not as easy as they made it sound! :) The popcorn stitch is fun to do too. But I'm always trying to figure out what I would make it on; because it's not for a doily or something, more like something fun for a kid - you know what I mean? =)

My favorite yarn brands for just general crocheting are Sincerely Sensations and Red Heart. You?

33caa731aa135531af9eb65eabf44803?s=128&d=mm

Emmy

Increase means that you crochet two stitches into one space, thus creating an extra stitch for the round/row you are on.

Decrease is the opposite: it means you use two spaces of the previous row/round, but only create one stich for the next round. So, you would do part of the stitch (for example, double crochet) in one space, then before ending the stich, you insert your hook into the next space, and end the stitch there. Hope that makes sense to you ;)

Yes, I know some of those stitches! Can you do the puff stitch? I've never tried it, but I know how to do it and it looks fun!

Well, I really like Stylecraft yarn (only sold in the UK or online, where I buy it) because it is cheap, has lots of color options, and is lovely to work with. I also like the more expensive yarns that are just gorgeous. James C. Brett has beautiful cotton/acrylic yarn I'm using on my ripple blanket. I love it! But yeah, Stylecraft will probably become my trusty run-to yarn ;)

7dd80386abb09077121e3035a6872af4?s=128&d=mm

God's Maiden of Virtue

Yes, that makes sense. I guess that means I've done "increase" before without even knowing it. :) I'll have to try decrease sometime! Thanks! :)

The puff stitch…hm, I don't think I've heard of it before. Is it similar to the popcorn stitch or bullion?

Do you do any embroidery?

33caa731aa135531af9eb65eabf44803?s=128&d=mm

Emmy

Yes, sort of similar. You could look it up and see how to do it :)

Well, I've done cross stitch. I think it's fun, but I enjoy crocheting more. And you?

7dd80386abb09077121e3035a6872af4?s=128&d=mm

God's Maiden of Virtue

I'll look it up sometime if I get the chance.

I tried cross stitching, but never really enjoyed it. As you said, I enjoy crocheting much, much more. =) On the other hand, I do know how to embroider, and greatly enjoy it! Though I am not nearly as skilled as others, I'm sure, I've learned a lot, and have enjoyed making embroidered gifts for people. :)

Is anyone familiar with crocheting baby hats?? :D I want to make one for Sarah's brother or sister when he/she is born. :D

Aw, that's so sweet of you! Were you the one who made that blanket for Even (or was that Juliette)? He still sleeps with it and we call it the "buggy blanket".

33caa731aa135531af9eb65eabf44803?s=128&d=mm

Emmy

Yes, I have crocheted quite a few baby hats! I've sold a few of them too :) Did you want to know something specific about making them?

46b0838c9cc5ce97a828ef8b34d0a41a?s=128&d=mm

Abigail Rose

I just don't really know how. My mom has made a few. She doesn't remember exactly how she did it though.
What is the best kind of stitch to use?

33caa731aa135531af9eb65eabf44803?s=128&d=mm

Emmy

I've used double crochet in general. But if you want a warmer hat for cold weather, half double crochet might be better.

Can you read patterns?

33caa731aa135531af9eb65eabf44803?s=128&d=mm

Emmy

No prob ;) If you have any questions, just ask.

Oh, and the blog Repeat Crafter Me has some really cute patterns for baby hats, you should check it out! And some of her patterns include pictures and videos :D

I like using lots of different color, so working it white can get kind of boring for me ;) but I know there are some really pretty doilies and other lacy things out there! What do you like making?

Well, neither was I, but then we got some really pretty yarn/thread that varies colors, and I found a really old crochet booklet (that's falling apart), and I got into it. I've been able to make some really pretty place mats, etc.! I am using thread to make a lacy purple scarf (with triple crochets) now. :)

I really like all the brands (like Red Heart) that have patterns on the back of the labels. :) But my favorite yarns to look at are the soft fluffy baby yarns. :D

I want to make a Romantic style dress/jumper with a blouse underneath. I found sewing patterns for both with Sense and Sensibility, but they cost $43! Not to mention that I want a crocheting pattern for lacy gloves! What should I do?

33caa731aa135531af9eb65eabf44803?s=128&d=mm

Emmy

Oh my goodness!! Yeah, that's just a BIT expensive! Well, you could try to look up a free pattern. That's what I always do. So far I've never bought a pattern ;)

Mmhmm! My sister and I have both made many ruffle scarves using the yarn :D we made them for ourselves and our friends. Everyone gives us lots of compliments- apparently they're very fashionable! Do you like to use "fashion" yarns?

I am by no means a good crocheter…I'd love to learn how to do it better, but all I can do is the chain stitch and adding on to that. I have made up some stitches of my own as needed :P So I crocheted a ruffle scarf as directed by a YouTube video, but I prefer the knitted look better.

What do you mean by "fashion yarns"?

33caa731aa135531af9eb65eabf44803?s=128&d=mm

Emmy

Fashion yarns are like the "weird" or unsual yarns: furry yarn, feather yarn, pom pom yarn, frilly yarn, etc.

I like crocheting! I know how to knit but I enjoy crocheting a lot more. My sister and I learned how to crochet about a 2 years ago. I only know how to do one stitch in knitting. I am working on a blanket (I have been working on it since early 2013). My sister taught me how to do owls and hats and flowers and several other things! Attic24.com is my favorite crochet blog! oh, and I like bunnymummy.com, too.

I'll say…I have thought of that - there just aren't that many modest, free patterns out there. I love this pattern I'm looking at on SaS, though, so I hope I can get it cheaper somehow. :( We shop at Hancock Fabrics often, and I like to look through the patterns when we have sales. :) So many of them aren't the style I want, though!

@Rachel - I hadn't thought of getting the PDF form, I'll have to see if we can do that! Someone is going to lend me a serger, so maybe I can learn how to use it and use it for my dress. :)

Fun! Are they friends or siblings? I've taught a few people, and I'm teaching my little brother now ;)

Were you looking at this one? Because the paper pattern is $16, and the E-pattern :P is $10.

EDIT: Oops, I see what you mean, but it's only $29 for both the paper patterns.

Hi!
I'm Jenna!
I already wrote some stuff before this but I am going to copy Emmy (my older sis) and introduce myself as well.

I have 5 sibs, too. (Well since Emmy is my sister I guess that is kind of obvious :) )
I like to do the same things Emmy does except I am not a very good writer (although I do enjoy writing).

Emmy told me about these forums but never told me how to get them so I just explored Memverse and found them the other day!

I started Memverse when Emmy did but I stopped for a year and just got back on in the beginning of Jan.

OK, I might have gotten the price slightly off…yes, I think that's the right link. I sure hope you're right! I'm going to ask Mama to check again…limited websites to look at…
You can print it for yourself, if you buy the PDF, right?
